NEW GENERATION LEARNING SPACE DESIGN 2014Dear colleague,

Following two years of rapid technological disruption and increasing student numbers, flexibility in the design of learning spaces has become essential. But the ultimate in flexibility, large open-plan centres in which both learning and teaching take place, still presents challenges. There can be no one blueprint for the design of learning and teaching spaces.

IQPC’s 3rd Annual New Generation Learning Space Design Conference, taking place on 25 -26 March 2014 in Sydney, will showcase a variety of approaches and designs of physical spaces that depend as much on the individual institution’s vision for learning, its purpose, its learners, and the source and type of funding, as on the uniform set of requirements found across the sector.

Join colleagues from around the country in an exploration of innovative technologies and approaches that can help clarify your own requirements when rethinking your learning and teaching spaces.

Register by the 17th January 2014 and save with the early bird offers!

To book your place, simply call 02 9229 1000, email [email protected] or online at www.designforlearning.com.au

Looking forward to meeting you in March!

Applying environmental behaviour research to the design of learning spaces

This interactive two-hour workshop will look at learning spaces in zoos and universities around the world, and how the qualities of each can provide input into future design.

This workshop will also make attendees think outside the standard conventional spaces using odd shapes that make for excellent education environments. Attendees should be prepared to participate in activities and open discussion.

Workshop A:APPLYING AN EVIDENCED-BASED APPROACH TO THE NEW LEARNING SPACESTuesday, 25 March 2014 (07:30 AM - 09:30 AM)

Educational Design: From Multi-Generational to Inter-Generational to Post-Generational

Today’s students, like the community at large, are more diverse than ever before and catering to the learning needs of diverse student populations is an increasing challenge, yet amongst the fastest growing type of diversity, particularly in the tertiary sector, is generational diversity.

In many courses Baby Boomers and Xers are studying alongside Generation Y and Generation Z. The challenge for institutions is to create not so much to create multi-generational spaces but rather inter-generational solutions. Facilities that meet the needs of a diverse student cohort is required today, yet facilities need to be built with future learners in mind and with a functional life cycle of several decades.

Workshop outline:• The timeless drivers of learning needs and how organisations can maintain their relevance from generation to generation.• Moving beyond inter-generational spaces to create post-generational design which meets the needs of individual learners while facilitating interactive community• Future-proofing facilities for the emerging diversity of the generations to come.

This will be an interactive workshop which will present research-based insights and innovative case studies to equip attendees with strategies to apply to their learning space design.

Workshop facilitators:

Ian WoodruffSenior Lecturer in the School of Management,RMIT UNIVERISTY

He has led RMIT University’s Business Management programs in Hong Kong, Singapore and Melbourne. He has been an early innovator in the delivery of blended learning which was recognised by the “Award for Outstanding achievement in teaching and research – Internationalisation” by RMIT University in 2012.

Jason DownsAssociate Lecturer, Strategic Management, School of Management,RMIT UNIVERSITY

Jason lectures in Strategic Management and is currently in the final stage of his PhD in strategic thinking and strategy making.  He is driving some very significant changes in the ways that technology is used in course delivery and has considerable expertise in course design, blended delivery and student engagement.
