What will we call this decade? The 2020’s? The double 20’s? Whatever the decade will be known as let us hope that it brings with it a more positive, kinder and gentler spirit for us all. Looking back on 2019, the MCBA can take pride in the continued progress we made in our efforts to maintain the integ‐ rity of the legal profession, to promote the independence of the judiciary and to sup‐ port our communities by providing access to justice through education, pro bono work and reduced fee programs, by organizing food and toy drives and by participating in community service projects. We can look back on the year and be pleased with our accomplishments at the MCBA and hope‐ fully, you are satisfied personally and pro‐ fessionally with your accomplishments as well. Looking forward to 2020, we will con‐ tinue our efforts to encourage membership in the MCBA and to provide programming and services to support our members. One of the first programs we have slated on the calendar is the Centennial Celebra‐ tion of the Passage of the 19th Amendment to be held on Monday, February 3rd. The 19th Amendment provided that the rights of citizens of the United States were not to be denied by the United States or any State because of sex. Hard to believe that it was only 100 years ago that women were af‐ forded the fundamental right to vote in our country. Hard to believe that it was so re‐ cent that many of our grandmothers, mine included, were born in and grew up in a time when women could not vote. The program will begin with an historical perspective of the suffragist movement and the efforts of New Jersey suffragist Alice Paul in securing the adoption of the 19th Amendment. The historical background will be presented by Sharon Hallanan, Esq., New Jersey State Bar Foundation speaker. Hon‐ orable Tahesha Way, New Jersey’s Secretary of State, will provide the keynote speech addressing the Centennial Celebration as well as giving perspective on women’s vot‐ ing and engagement. The evening will also include a panel discussion on the milestone, where we have come and where we still need to go. The American Bar Association’s travel‐ ing six panel exhibit will be on display at the event being held at the NJ Law Center in New Brunswick. The exhibit will feature historic pictures and details of the suffragist movement as well as outline the challenges that remain. The MCBA is thankful to the New Jersey State Bar Association and New Jersey Women’s Lawyers Association for co‐ sponsoring the program. All are invited to attend and celebrate this historic milestone. The program is impor‐ tant for all of us, not just women. Promoting the right to vote and equality in voting is a goal that all of us should prioritize. Espe‐ cially in the coming year with the important presidential election, the ability to and exer‐ cising the right to vote will have monumen‐ tal importance. January is often thought of as the time of resolutions and new beginnings. Along with your personal resolutions and goals, I ask you to please keep in mind the MCBA. Make it your resolution to become more active, attend an event or participate in a commu‐ nity service program. On behalf of the board of the MCBA, I wish you all a very Happy New Year. Let the new decade begin! MCBA The Middlesex County Bar Association 87 Bayard Street, New Brunswick, NJ 08901 www.mcbalaw.com 732.828.3433 Message from the President . . . By Daria Venezia, Esq.
