If you’re a regular reader you knowthat I usually start this editorial withsome interesting tidbit about our

cover girl or boy. But this month I’m going to be a bit indulgent and tell youwhy this particular issue is so special toeveryone here at Famous.

In November of 1999 we launched thismagazine as the in-theatre publicationfor Famous Players theatres. We thoughtthat was pretty great — we had an instant, national readership of movie lovers.

Then, in 2005, Famous Players waspurchased by Cineplex, as was this magazine. Since that time, we havecontinued to be available in theatres bearing the Famous Players andAlliance Atlantis names.

But as of this issue, Famous is available in all Cineplex Entertainmenttheatres — that means Cineplex Odeon, Famous Players and Galaxycinemas (we’re still at Alliance theatres too). So some of you may belooking at Famous for the very first time. Welcome.

We hope you enjoy reading this magazine as much as we enjoy putting it together. You’ll find that, even though Famous is meant tobe fun and entertaining, we take creating it very seriously. Our feature stories are based on interviews with the biggest names in Hollywood, we scour the entertainment world for unique and interesting photographs (rather than the usual red-carpet fare), andwe do everything we can to keep you in the loop when it comes to current and upcoming films.

And how great is this? To celebrate the expansion, we’re going tosend one lucky contest winner to Los Angeles to attend the red-carpet premiere of Transformers. Check out page 18 for all the details.

Speaking of upcoming films, you may have noticed that this is ourSpring Preview Issue. Starting on page 19 you can read about all themovies being released from now until the end of May, with spotlightson some of the most exciting films.

Plus, each month of that preview starts with a great interview —March is Adam Sandler for Reign Over Me, a heartbreaking drama about a guy who just can’t deal with reality after losing his family on9/11; April is all about our cover girl, Scarlett Johansson, who stars in The Nanny Diaries, an adaptation of the populartell-all book of the same name; and May goes toKirsten Dunst, whose spunky Mary Jane Watsonmay finally get a proposal from her web-slingingboyfriend in Spider-Man 3.

Plus, on page 14, you’ll find my chat withCanadian actor Tom Cavanagh (Ed from Ed) abouthis latest film, Gray Matters.

Once again, welcome to all of our new readers,we’re thrilled to have you.

As you can see by this photo, part of the new Will Ferrell

movie, Blades of Glory, takesplace in Montreal, at the “Jeux du Monde Wintersports.”

The movie follows Chazz(Ferrell) and Jimmy (NapoleonDynamite’s Jon Heder), a couple

of world-class Men’s figureskaters who’ve been on- and off-ice rivals since they werekids. When they tie for the goldmedal at the “World WintersportGames” they get into a brawlatop the podium and are bannedfrom Men’s figure skating for

life. But then they discover aloophole in the rules — if theyteam up and perform as a pairthey must be allowed tocompete. Hilarity ensues.

Several segments were shot in Montreal last March, including one with “YoungChazz” and “Young Jimmy” thatsets the stage for their rivalry. A casting call for kids who canskate was sent out, specifyingall of the spins, axels and toeloops the boys must be able tocomplete. But the call alsogives some interesting behind-the-scenes tidbits about thepint-sized players’ motivation:

“Young Chazz is a troubledkid, with a darker energy. DO NOT play the scenes forcomedy…play the realemotions,” and “YOUNG JIMMYis an angelic kid, with a light &

happy energy.” Also, “Theactors should be as natural aspossible, not cutesy, or over-the-top. It is VERY IMPORTANTthat the scenes totally be playedfor the reality. We are looking forNON-ACTING, SUBTLE, REAL& NATURAL acting.”

In the end, the non-speakingrole of Young Jimmy went toeight-year-old Zachary Ferrenfrom Chatham, Ontario. But,alas, it doesn’t look like asuitable Young Chazz could befound in these parts becausethe role went to Laguna Beach,California, native Ridge Canipe,a 13-year-old wonder who hasalready appeared in movies likeBad News Bears and Walk theLine, and on TV’s DesperateHousewives and CSI. No wordwhether the California boy didhis own double toe loops. —MW

What happens when thegeneration that grew up

reading Harry Potter goes tocollege? It creates its own versionof intramural Quidditch.

Students at Middlebury Collegein Vermont originally came up withthe game, which is slowlyspreading to other Northeasterncollege campuses. Now, thesecrazy earth-bound kids don’t haveflying brooms to ride, but they dorun around with brooms betweentheir legs, wearing capes.

The object of the game is tocapture the Snitch — a flying

golden ball in the books andmovies — which, in this case, is a tennis ball, stuffed inside asock, that hangs out of the shortsof a fleet-footed runner. The real-life Snitch, who wears a yellowoutfit (complete with yellow facepaint), is chased around the fieldwhile the Bludgers (attackers)toss dodgeballs at one another. The Quaffle (a small ball used forscoring points) is a volleyballthat’s fired at gold-painted Hula Hoops mounted on chairs. As yet, there is no mandatory drug testing for this sport. —IR

Perhaps the biggest film star to come out of Japan, Godzilla, was front and centre at the recent opening of the brand-new

National Art Centre at Tokyo. The gallery is unique in that it hasno permanent collection, instead using its 14,000 square metresof exhibition space for visiting shows, giving it an “unpredictablequality” according the building’s architect, Kisho Kurokawa.Godzilla was part of the very first visiting exhibit, “The Power ofExpression, Japan,” which pulled together works of manga(Japanese graphic novels), anime and entertainment art from thepast several decades. —MW

Zombies are a hot commodity inHollywood. The undead have made ahuge cinematic comeback, thanks

mostly to the resurgence of horror flicks. Butin director Andrew Currie’s (Mile Zero) latestmovie, Fido (in theatres March 16), zombiesdon’t seem all that scary, having beendomesticated and put to work as servantsand labourers, even kept as family pets.

The film, set in the idyllic 1950s, picks up after a dust cloud passes throughEarth’s atmosphere and causes the dead to rise in search of human flesh. But thanksto a collar invented by the ZomConcorporation, zombies are controlled andconsidered docile. Helen (Carrie-AnneMoss) and Bill (Dylan Baker) Robinsoneven allow their son Timmy to keep a zombienamed Fido (Billy Connolly) as a pet.

“Fido is more of a comedy and reallyisn’t a horror film, although it plays withthe genre,” says Currie on the line from his Vancouver office.

“And at the heart of it all is the theme:Love, not fear, makes us alive. It’s reallyabout the family and the father, played byDylan Baker, who is this guy who iscompletely fear-based. He’s terrified ofzombies but he’s also terrified of intimacy, and the central irony of it all is that Fido, who’s dead, comes into the family and yourealize he’s more emotionally engaged andalive than the father.”

Currie is partial to zombies, having used the zombie metaphor in his short filmNight of the Living, which he made while aresident at the Canadian Film Centre. Thatone was about a boy who thinks hisalcoholic father is a zombie.

“I don’t know what attracts me tozombies, probably it’s that the zombierepresents ‘the other.’ They are very close tohumans, and I’m sure they’re tied into ourown fear of mortality and illness and all ofthat. They sort of embody that, don’t they?”

For actor Carrie-Anne Moss, Fido marked

the beginning of a new life — shortly afteraccepting the role of Helen she discoveredshe was pregnant. She assumed Currie wouldfind another actor for the part but insteadhe wrote the pregnancy into the script.

“When Carrie-Anne found out she waspregnant she let us know quite early in theprocess,” remembers Currie. “And whenshe talked to me about the pregnancy weboth got really excited because the film’stheme of death, and the fear of death, ismatched with the idea of what it means tobe alive, and for her to have this living childinside her, it just sort of deepened thewhole thing in a really organic way.”

The kicker was that Currie’s partner andFido’s producer, Mary Ann Waterhouse, alsobecame pregnant before filming started.“They were actually pregnant within a fewweeks of each other,” says Currie. “It wasgreat. They were both radiant and happy, itwas a really special and wonderfulsurprise.” —INGRID RANDOJA

A bout five years ago, Toronto-based wildlife photographerRob Stewart set out to make a documentary about one ofhis lifelong passions, sharks. He figured it would be an

informative film filled with beautiful underwater imagery, sortof like an underwater version of Baraka, the 1992 documentaryabout life on Earth that was made up of striking imagery fromaround the world.

But three weeks into the shoot a string ofdramatic incidents turned the movie fromunderwater eye candy to a human drama involving politics, criminal charges and anear-death experience. The resulting film,Sharkwater, is released in theatres this month.

Stewart was doing some last-minute tweaksto the film’s colour at a Toronto editing facility when he spoke with Famous.

Tell me about this film. “I tried to make justan underwater movie, then everything went to hell. While wewere making the movie, the conservation group that I wasworking with collided with a fishing boat in Guatemala, weended up getting charged with attempted murder in Costa Rica, and then getting arrested and exposing this corruption ring, Iwas filming this Taiwanese mafia. Everything went crazy andwe ended up having to turn the cameras on ourselves in casewe were stuck in a Costa Rican prison, so I would have arecord of that. And when I came back from that main shoot I had this crazy human drama and none of the underwaterBaraka that I thought I was going to make.”

You contracted flesh-eating disease while you were shooting, andwere taken to a hospital in the Galapagos Islands where doctorswanted to remove your leg. How did you recover from that? “Sevendays of superstrong Ecuadorian antibiotics and little blue pills that made me sleep the whole time. After that I had Dengue Fever, West Nile Virus and TB. Dengue Fever is sortof like West Nile, I actually got West Nile in Toronto. I got

back from this trip and I was getting overDengue and I got bitten by a mosquito ina park in Toronto and it was West Nile. And then I had latent tuberculosis that

was just sitting in me. I finished university in Africa, so I probably contracted it there. It stayed dormant in me until myimmune system was so devastated by the other two.”

How are you now? “Good. I’m a little more sensitive, so if Imiss a few nights of sleep in a row I’ll probably get sick.”

Why this obsession with sharks? “There’s a lot we can learn fromthem. We’re living at a time on Earth when human’s survival onthe planet is in jeopardy. We’re not living in balance with thenatural world, we’re breaking virtually every ecological lawthere is on the planet. So we can look to sharks because they’rethe only large animal that survived for 400-million years, figureout how they live in balance with the world. Also, there’s noother animal you can look at that’s so perfectly designed to liveon Earth. I grew up as a boy catching snakes and lizards andstuff like that and sharks are sort of the ultimate cool boy animal — they’re big, they’re menacing, they’re beautiful andpowerful, and nobody really likes them.”

For many, Ottawa native Tom Cavanaghwill always be synonymous with Ed Stevens, the bowling alley lawyer

he played for four seasons on the NBC series Ed. And for good reason. The 43-year-old actor shares much with Stuckyville’s prodigal son, including thesame amiable, enthusiastic demeanorand self-deprecating sense of humour.

Since Ed went off the air in 2004, Cavanagh has rarely been out of work, appearing in several episodes of Scrubs, the doomed TV series Love Monkey, andthe satirical Broadway musical Urinetown. That last credit isn’t as much of a departureas you might think. After graduating fromKingston, Ontario’s Queen’s University,Cavanagh earned roles in song-and-danceproductions like A Chorus Line and Cabaret, then moved to New York to appear in theBroadway musical Shenandoah.

“I really, really liked the city and havebeen fortunate enough to get some filmshere. So I’ve had a place here for a longtime,” says Cavanagh over the phonefrom his New York home. The actor married Maureen Grise, a photo editor forSports Illustrated, a couple of years ago andthey now have a one-year-old daughter.

In Cavanagh’s latest movie, Gray Matters,he plays Sam, an amiable doctor who fallsin love with Charlie (Bridget Moynahan)after meeting her at a dog park. Problemis, Sam’s sister Gray (Heather Graham)— who is just realizing she’s gay — alsofalls for Charlie. Alan Cumming is cast as aScottish cabbie with a crush on Gray, whileSissy Spacek has a small role as Gray’s loopy psychiatrist.

“We had a screening for the New YorkFilm Critics last night, which seemed togo fine. Nobody threw anything,” jokes Cavanagh.

So what’s your take on Gray Matters?“It’s basically your typical cops and robbers car chase…no, just kidding. Sue Kramer, the director, attempted tomake an homage to the musical romanticcomedies of the ’40s but set it in the

present day, which, if you thinkabout it, is an interesting conceit. It’s avery personal story for Sue, not just inthat respect, but because it’s a sort of Valentine to her sister, who’s gay.”

The topic is treated in a very light manner. Was that on purpose?“It was 100 percent purposeful. It reallywasn’t going to be one of these teen coming-of-age, dripping with angstthings. Sue had no desire to do that. Itwas basically — look, it’s sometimes anegative word in our culture — but it’s amovie that’s unabashedly populist. Shewanted to make a commercial movie, andshe did. While [coming out is] a big storyfor the individual, in her point of view itshouldn’t be a big deal. So she didn’twant to treat it as ‘Oh my gosh, look howheavy this is.’ There are serious moments, but largely it’s a romantic comedy.”

The most progressive thing about the moviemay be casting Alan Cumming, an openlygay actor, as a straight man with a crush onthe leading lady.“Yeah, I mean Alan, if you’ve seen his stuff,he’s a vicious talent. Any time I see Alanin a role like that I want him to be on thescreen all the time. You know, like, ‘GetCavanagh out of there and put Cummingon screen for a few more minutes.’ And inthis role, it’s very straight, it’s a sweet role, and maybe not typically what you’re usedto seeing [from him]. I think you will findthat this guy is eminently watchable.”

And filmmakers rarely cast gay actors in astraight, romantic roles.“I really hadn’t thought of it that way.Hopefully that’ll change…. You don’thave to be a drug addict to play a drug addict. You don’t have to be straight to playstraight. That’s just a very short-sightedway for the entertainment industry tolook at things.”

You went to Queen’s, where you played basketball and earned three degrees — Biology, English and Education — but didyou study drama there? Do they even havea drama department?“They have a very good drama department, very accomplished, very well-respected,but no, I took it initially as an elective myfirst year and just realized that I felt moreat home with the doing than the crafts-man part of it. There were always plentyof plays being put on at Queen’s — bothstraight theatre and musical theatre,

so if that’s what you want to be involved in there’s plenty of opportunities. I took advantage of that.”

How do you end up with three degrees?“You have five years of basketball eligibility[laughs]. I knew that I wasn’t going to usethose degrees professionally, but I was interested in the subject matter. I was doing plays throughout my stay there and that, as much as anything, was myuniversity experience.”

I can see how you can act without formaltraining, but how do you do musicals without formal training?“My family’s very musical, my mother’s amusic teacher. My sisters both haveawards of distinction as pianists, my dad’sinto musicals, my brother and I and myfather all play guitar, and there’s alwayssinging around the place. I always playedin a band throughout college, really justa college band, but a lot of fun. So I’mused to playing on stage and performinganyway, so it was an easy step.”

And did you have to dance?“Sure.”

So where did that come from?“I dunno [laughs], that’s another crazyquestion. I’m sure it was very awful dancing, but I think I was coordinatedenough to play sports so a lot of my dancecame, initially, as pure mimicry. Youknow, I may not be able to do all thesecombinations or dance competently otherwise, but if you just show me whatthe moves are and teach me where every-thing needs to go, you know, I’ll workvery hard at that and hopefully, by thetime we open, hopefully, you can put meat the back and I can get away with it.”

says their anxiety is for naught. “I likewhat I’ve been doing, so I don’t really seeany reason to do anything different,”insists Sandler, who has already madesuch family-fare as Big Daddy and the animated Eight Crazy Nights.

“I believe in what I’ve done in the past, and I hope that my kid enjoys some ofthe movies I’ve made and enjoys some ofthe movies I make in the future,” he continues. “I don’t think that she’ll digthem until she’s maybe 14 or 15 or maybe

10, but I know that I’ll show her them her whole life. I’ll be like, ‘Watch daddynow. Let it affect you the way that it affect-ed all of America.’”

His next movie, I Now Pronounce YouChuck and Larry, is another comedy, butthis time it’s about a subject that is neithersafe nor particularly mainstream — same-sex marriage. Although Sandlerperformed at the Republican NationalConvention in 2004, he supports gay rights.

“I’ve always been an open-minded

person, it’s just that in my earlier films Ididn’t have the box-office power to saythe things I wanted to say,” says Sandler.“Now that I’m seen as a little popular, Ican say and do a lot more of what I want.”

I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larryhas Sandler and Kevin James playing two heterosexual fireman buddies inPhiladelphia who are forced to act like agay couple in order to receive much-needed insurance and other benefits being awarded to domestic partners. Thefilm also stars Jessica Biel, Dan Akyroydand former firefighter Steve Buscemi, who worked at a New York fire station forseveral years before making it as an actor.

Some people have suggested Sandlerwas anxious to do the film as a way tosend a middle-finger salute to some gossip columnists who questioned hissexual leanings before he got married.

“You know, when you don’t go on TVand talk about how many women yousleep with, some people in Hollywoodthat are supposedly ‘in the know’ startwhispering that you’re gay,” he says witha smirk. “If I were gay, I wouldn’t beashamed to admit it, I think I’ve demon-strated that with Big Daddy [with its positive depiction of a gay couple]. Thisis the part of being famous that most actors hate — people making up thingsabout you that aren’t true. But you learnto ignore it and keep on doing whatyou’re here for — making people laughor cry and try to teach them a thing ortwo along the way.”

Earl Dittman is a Houston-based entertainment writer.

“Now that I have afamily, it’s hard toimagine what friendsand relatives of thepeople who died felt,”says Sandler.“Hopefully, this moviewill help to heal someof that pain”

It’s hard to deny; most peoplego to Adam Sandler moviessimply to see him act silly.

And, like many of his comicbrethren — Jim Carrey, ChrisRock, Steve Martin — whenthey take on serious roles, theprojects often fair poorly.

Sandler himself has hadmixed success with more dramatic fare — earning greatreviews and a Golden Globenomination for Punch-DrunkLove, but suffering through amediocre reaction to Spanglish.

“You always want every single one ofyour movies to make a lot of money and be popular with your fans, but I can never grow as an actor if I let badbox-office numbers scare me away from the more dramatic films,” says the40-year-old New York native who got hisfirst big break in 1990 when he joined thecast of Saturday Night Live. “I’m not afraidto take chances, because all it can do ishelp me grow as an artist and a person. Ilike testing myself a little bit.”

In the same breath, though, Sandleradmits he finds it more relaxing to makejokes and do pratfalls than to shoot a sad scene. “I’m much more comfortableshowing up at a set knowing that we havea funny scene coming up,” he says. “Imean, if I have to do a really depressingscene, I don’t like sitting in my trailer being depressed all day. I don’t like that,

but I do it because it’s important for myperformance. But I’m glad when it’sover, because it feels like a relief. If I didthe best that I could do, I feel a hugesense of accomplishment. But I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that I wouldrather go to work in a movie like Click, soI can fart in David Hasselhoff’s face.”

Whatever calm and satisfaction Sandlermay get from expelling bodily gases inthe face of a former TV star were put onthe back burner when his wife, formermodel Jackie Titone (now Jackie Sandler),read director Mike Binder’s script forReign Over Me, about a man who lost hisfamily on 9/11.

“She told me she thought that I couldreally do it justice, but I thought it was avery heavy movie, and I was scared to do it,” Sandler recalls. “But she really encouraged me and told me it was amovie I would be proud of.”

Sandler plays Charlie Fineman, whoselife has been consumed by anguish sincehis family died in the World Trade Center. An unexpected meeting with an oldfriend, however, begins to change his world.

“Basically, at its core, it’s just about aman who’s been through a terrible thing,”says Sandler. “Charlie lost his family in9/11, and he has a hard time just livinglife and just being in the moment. Hedoesn’t want to know about life. He triesto pretend that he never had a family. Hecan only deal with his life by thinkingabout stuff in his past, about growing up.

“One day, he bumps into this guy, Alan— Don Cheadle plays him — and Charlieand Alan both went to dental school together,” Sandler continues. “But Charliehasn’t spoken to anyone in five years, andfor some reason, Alan makes him feelcomfortable. So it’s about a friendshipthat changes both their lives.”

Although the story sounds like it couldhave been based on real people — likeWorld Trade Center and United 93 before it— Sandler insists that it’s not. “He is nota real guy or at least not one particular real guy,” explains Sandler. “Now, Mikedid a lot of research and met a lot of people like Charlie that were affected by9/11, so I guess you could say a lot ofCharlie’s words and certainly his grief arereal. Now that I have a family, it’s hard toimagine what friends and relatives of thepeople who died felt. Hopefully, thismovie will help to heal some of that pain.”

Aside from his wife, Sandler’s familynow consists of 10-month-old daughterSadie Madison. He says he never had anydoubts about becoming a dad, his sistersboth have kids and he’s always loved beingaround them. “Every day, I get more andmore excited, and I feel comfortable withher. I just want her to feel comfortablewith me. My arms aren’t perfect for thekid’s head when I cradle her. I got togrow the boobs.”

If Sandler’s fans are worried fatherhoodwill steer “The Sandman” toward makingmore family-oriented movies, the actor

M A R C H 3 0BLADES OF GLORY Okay, we admit it, just the idea ofWill Ferrell and Jon Heder ascompetitive figure skaters had uslaughing, and now that there’spictorial evidence of them, inlame costumes and sporting badEddie Van Halen haircuts no less, we’re psyched.

Rival skaters Chazz Michael Michaels (Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Heder) disgracetheir sport (unlike, say, Olympic judges) when they get into a brawl after a competition.Banned from singles skating, the two decide to make nice and attempt a comeback in theonly category they can: pairs skating. Sure, pairs skaters are usually comprised of oneman and one woman, but there is no rule that forbids same-sex couples, so let the doubleaxels and triple Lutz-double toe loops fly!

Co-directors Josh Gordon and Will Speck are both making their big-screen debuts, while two of the four writers — John Altschuler and David Krinsky — have written forTV’s King of the Hill.

After spending the betterpart of 2005 and early2006 in England filmingtwo Woody Allen films,Scoop and Match Point, then going to Bulgariato do Brian De Palma’sThe Black Dahlia,Scarlett Johanssonwas happy to spendthe first part of last year shootingThe Nanny Diariesin her nativeNew York City.

“I was so ready to spend some time athome after being away for what seemedlike ages,” says the 22-year-old actor, sitting in a short, white silk dress duringan interview at a Manhattan hotel. “It wasso wonderful to shoot in New York inspring and summer, because the cityreally looks its best during those months.”

The fact that the husband and wifeteam of Shari Springer Berman andRobert Pulcini (American Splendor), alsonative New Yorkers, were directing thefilm completed the set’s New York vibe.

“I told everybody to take all the timethey needed to finish the movie,” saysJohansson, “because I didn’t want toleave too quickly.”

The Nanny Diaries, of course, began its existence as a best-selling novel by Nicola Kraus and Emma McLaughlin.Much like The Devil Wears Prada, the

book is sort-of true, based on Kraus andMcLaughlin’s “job from hell” experiencesworking as nannies in elitist Manhattan.

Johansson plays Annie Braddock, astruggling college student who becomesthe nanny for four-year-old Grayer(Nicholas Art), the son of a wealthy andwildly dysfunctional Upper East Sidecouple that Annie labels “Mr. X” (PaulGiamatti) and “Mrs. X” (Laura Linney)as she begins telling her best friendLynette (singer Alicia Keys) about the job.

“To have Paul Giamatti and LauraLinney with you in the same film onlymakes you better because they are theessence of great acting and only makeyou strive to be better. You just can watchthem for hours and hours and learn somany things about acting that you didn’teven know,” says Johansson. Then sheadds, “The person that really blew meaway was Alicia. She was incredible! Iknew she had just done another movie[Smokin’ Aces], but I didn’t realize howcomfortable she would be with acting.”

Johansson also has a lot of affection forher seven-year-old co-star Nicholas, whichisn’t surprising since she was a child actorherself, making her big-screen debut inRob Reiner’s North when she was just 10.And she was only 14 when she got her bigbreak playing a tormented teen comingto terms with the death of a friend inRobert Redford’s The Horse Whisperer.

“We hit it off immediately,” Johanssonsays of young Nick, “I guess because I

know what it’s like to be his age and tofeel that kind of pressure. He didn’thave a problem at all with his lines ordirection. Of course, if I really wanted toget his attention, I would just offer himcookies. It always worked with me whenthey needed me to hit my mark as a kid.”

Born into a family of five children(including a twin brother), Johanssonsays her craving for attention made her ashowbiz natural. However, she’s alwaysthought of herself as more of a song-and-dance gal than a dramatic actor.

“I started acting when I was aboutseven, and I always just loved to perform,”she remembers, searching her poshManhattan hotel suite for a bottle openerto pop the top off her mineral water.

“I was one of those type of singing anddancing kids — one of those ‘Broadwayaudition for Annie type kids.’ Believe it ornot, I loved that stuff and still do. I thinkit would surprise most people that I know the lyrics to every Rodgers andHammerstein musical ever written. I loveOklahoma and Carousel, too. That’s one ofthe reasons I was so excited to haveAlicia with me on The Nanny Diaries, because we would break out in songwhenever we got the chance. I do that allthe time. During Scoop, Hugh Jackmanand I would sing a lot of musical tunestogether on the set. I wouldn’t think thathe would’ve known all of those songs. Imean, there was Wolverine belting outsongs from Oklahoma — it was surreal.”

Johansson’s wholesome beauty, huskyvoice and curvy figure have rocketed herto the top of many a “Sexiest Celebrities”list, and earned her a lucrative contractpromoting L’Oreal cosmetics. So doesshe ever get tired of the compliments?

“I have to be honest, it’s really very nicewhen people that you don’t even knowcome up to you to tell you that you’resexy,” she says with a big smile. “And youknow they really mean it, it’s not a pickupline or anything like that. So, yeah, it is anice thing to hear. It makes me feelreally nice and cheerful. I imagineeveryone would react that way.”

She says that, most of the time, shefeels pretty good about the way she looks, but she refuses to call herself sexy, sayingthat’s up to others to decide. Plus, shepoints out, the people who decide suchthings don’t see her 24 hours a day.

“I know what I look like after threehours of sleep or what I look like after ahalf-day of sleep. It’s not always a pretty sight,” she says. “I wake up somemornings, look in the mirror, and thinkto myself, ‘Okay, this is a good day. I can

face the world.’ Now, other days I wakeup and go, ‘Oh my God, I need a hattoday!’ I mean, I still feel nice. And itreally feels good when people say you’resexy even when you feel like you’rehaving one of those ‘I need a hat’ days. It’s definitely a nice thing to hear and areal boost to the ego.”

As her fame grows, however, so doesthe public’s interest in her personal life. When her relationship with actor Josh Hartnett bit the dust late last year, the breakup generated lots of ink.

“I think as an actor, it’s nice to not have everyone know your business.Certainly in the society that we live intoday, people seem to want to focus moreon things that are very superfluous andunimportant instead of focusing on whatis actually going on in the world. It’smuch easier to find out who is datingwho than getting any real story aboutwhat’s going on in Iraq, Africa or Haiti.”

And “superfluous” is not generally a word you would use to describe Scarlett Johansson, or the majority of hermovie choices. With two films about the

British monarchy, The Other Boleyn Girland Mary, Queen of Scots, already in theediting room, and filming on Amazon —another period piece in which she’llplay, believe it or not, a gladiatrix (femalegladiator) looking for revenge in ancientRome — set to begin any day, Johanssoncontinues to choose substantial rolesover ones that let her simply look prettyand fall in love.

“I hope to always be searching forultimate satisfaction until the day that Idie, otherwise, gosh, how boring,” saysthe no-nonsense New Yorker. “I mean,it’s good to feel satisfied, but I never wantto stop looking or stop being curiousabout things. I think that you can get toa point in your life where you’recomfortable with that, but I never want tobe too comfortable.

“I’m saying that now, of course, as a 22-year-old girl,” she adds. “Ask me inanother 35 years and I’ll probably tell youthat all I want to be is comfortable.”

Sure, Spider-Man 3 looksl ike i t ’s f i l led withwall-to-wall crawlingaction, suspense andspecial effects.

Tobey Maguire’shero, Peter Parker, faces not one, not two,but three vi l lains — Thomas HadenChurch’s Sandman,Topher Grace’s Venom, and James Franco’sHarry Osborn, Parker’sformer friend who

finally takes up his dead father’s Green Goblin mantle.

As if that weren’t enough, some alienentity covers Parker — a.k.a. Spider-Man —with an all-black Spidey suit that enhanceshis powers but also affects his mind.

It sounds like a fanboy’s dream. Butask Kirsten Dunst — who’s back for athird round as Parker’s love interest,Mary Jane Watson — and she’ll tell youthat Spider-Man 3 is really all aboutsomething else: feelings.

“It’s very dramatic and very emotional,”the 24-year-old veteran actor says like, well, the young woman that she is. “Itreally concentrates on the characters’relationships, more so than before.”

Probably true. One of the hallmarks of director Sam Raimi’s Spidey films is that, along with all the stunts and fights, they stick pretty true to the soap opera

complications that made the Marvelcomics a sensation in the first place.

Still, Dunst may be a bit more focusedon the film’s romantic aspects than anyoneelse. After all, this is the film whereParker decides to ask for Mary Jane’shand in marriage. But complicationsarise, both because the alien force bringsout a darker side of Spidey, and becauseM.J. now has competition in the form ofher boyfriend’s other great comic-booklove, blonde bombshell Gwen Stacy, thedaughter of Police Captain Stacy.

“Her character adds another type ofwoman that puts Peter in a position, obviously, of conflict with me and lyingand all that,” Dunst says. “All of thosethings just create more drama in ourrelationship.”

Gwen is played by 26-year-old M. NightShyamalan favourite Bryce Dallas Howard(The Village, Lady in the Water). Andalthough she may be a rival on screen,Dunst was happy to have an actress herown age around. “It’s so funny,” Dunstsays, “everyone acts as if it’s a competitivething, but Bryce and I got along betterthan anybody. I was happy to have anothergirl to share all that testosterone with on the set. I mean, we have [producer]Laura Ziskin and other great ladies, but itwas nice to come to set and have a girl tohang out with.

“And I know, she’s the redhead and wearing a blond wig, and I’m the opposite,” Dunst adds, chuckling.

“We laughed about it.”Though Dunst is more often drawn to

serious-minded work, she insists thissuperhero series satisfies her creativeneeds as much as, say, last year’s costume-laden period piece Marie Antoinette.

“I approach Spider-Man as just asimportant as any artier things I do,” shesays. “These movies are very personal tome, and the relationships that I have withthose people now have so much history.I can’t really compare the experiencewith other films, but it’s like a family tome. Coming back to a place where youknow everybody is a good thing becauseyou’re confident and you’re not afraid togive your opinions on anything, lightingor whatever it is.”

That comfort level is a definite plus,

since Spider-Man 3 was not easy to make.“It’s a long movie,” she says of the

demanding production period. “Whenyou start doing the blue-screen work andyou’re just lying there reacting to all ofthese things that aren’t there in theselong takes, you feel like you’re losingyour mind. But when it comes to theacting, that’s what it’s all about for Sam.”

Since the last Spider-Man movie wasreleased early in 2004 (earning a then-record-breaking $88-million U.S. in itsopening weekend), Dunst has acted inthree films, with mixed success. Therewas the romantic comedy Wimbledon, seton the famed English tennis courts, thedisappointing love story Elizabethtownfrom director Cameron Crowe, andMarie Antoinette, Sofia Coppola’s bio-pic

that fulfilled neither awards season norfashion trend-setting expectations.

Yet Dunst doesn’t seem too concernedabout the fates of those projects.

“Everyone has their own opinion andthey’re entitled to them,” she saysconfidently. “Each movie’s not foreverybody, you can’t please ’em all. So Idon’t really have a problem with peoplenot liking some things I do.”

Yet if this third Spider-Man moviefollows in the footsteps of the first two —what with their stellar critical acclaim and$1.5-billion worldwide earnings to date— Dunst will once again come as close to“pleasing ’em all” as an actor can.

Bob Strauss is a Los Angeles-based entertainment writer.

very emotional,”Dunst says of the

film. “It reallyconcentrates on the characters’

relationships, moreso than before”

His loopyobsession with the fey pirate makes itseem like he’d be thrilled to play Sparrowfor the rest of his career.

So what to expect this time around?Well, the pic starts with Will (OrlandoBloom), Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) and theback-from-the-dead Captain Barbossa(Geoffrey Rush) setting sail for ‘World’s End’to rescue Jack from Davy Jones’ Locker, where he was banished at the end of thesecond movie. If you’ve lost that lovin’feeling then you need tosettle in with Peter Elkas’

newest disc, Wall of Fire(available March 13).

“I guess I can say it’s amake-out record,” says thesinger/songwriter on the linefrom his Toronto apartment. “Itsort of dawned on myself and

the guys in the band when wewere recording the third orfourth song...we were like, ‘Ithink we’re making a make-outrecord.’ Or, it’s a party recordfor two people.”

Wall of Fire is Elkas’ second solo disc, following hiscritically acclaimed debut Party of One (2004), which he

released after spending 12years with the Montreal bandLocal Rabbits. Elkas has asoulful voice and a way withwords, especially when itcomes to the subject ofrelationships. This CD is full of tales of hooking up — andbreaking up — with ladies, and the songs sound all themore sexy coming from a guywith dark, brooding looks that remind you of a young Cat Stevens.

“A lot of the album is aboutmoving from one thing to thenext, there are transitions goingon,” he explains. “It’s about thebridges you cross when you getto them in relationships.”

Elkas is himself happilysettled with a girlfriend whotreated him to a vacation inMexico last month. However, the timing couldn’t have beenworse with the CD’s release soclose at hand.

“My girlfriend was given the trip as a bonus from workand I was just rolled into thepackage,” he says with a laugh.“It was supposed to be avacation but I pretty muchstewed the entire time aboutwhat was going on — we didn’thave the CD cover conceptnailed down, stuff like that.

“It’s an emotional rollercoaster when a record comesout and you always forget howstressful it is, but it’s alsoreally, really fun. And it’s fun tobe talking about my sophomore

release ’cause I never thoughtI’d be doing this when I wasyounger. I thought I was goingto have fun in a band for a fewyears, but it just sort of stuck, and it’s 15 years later and I’mstill plugging away.”

ALL PRAISE NEON BIBLEA

rcade Fire’s sophomore CD, Neon Bible (available March 6), opens with a rolling kettle drumthat clears a path for the ear-catching single “Black Mirror,” and you know straight away theMontreal band is going to try its damnedest to knock you off your feet. And they do.

More energetic than their debut CD Funeral, Neon Bible revels in its noisiness, and the band —which already incorporates a stage full of instruments for both touring and recording — includes apipe organ, hurdy-gurdy, military choir and full orchestra to back it up this time around. But it’s notjust noise for the sake of noise, Arcade Fire are masters at layering their melodies with odd, yetcomplementary, sounds, and as always their almost evangelical approach to rock sends theirmusic to a higher plane.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: SHADOW OFCHERNOBYL PCPost-apocalyptic scenarios are common invideogames, but the jumping off point forS.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a real-life nuclear disaster.Created in the Ukraine, this long-awaitedfirst-person shooter imagines a secondmysterious “event” at Chernobyl thatunleashes a bunch of otherworldly mutants.

The action takes place on a 300-square-kilometre map — more like you’d find in arole-playing game — where a treasurehunter/mercenary type hunts for artifactsand battles monsters. In an impressiveexample of squeezing lemons into lemonade, the developers made many trips to theChernobyl Exclusion Zone to get the eeriefeel right, where they took in “the barrenstreets of Pripyat, the murky sarcophagusof Reactor #4, destroyed settlements andthe irradiated vehicle cemetery.”

SSX BLUR WII With huge air, blurring speed and signature“Uber” tricks, the SSX series has providedsome of the best snowboarding and skiingthrills since it launched in 2000. For thisre-grooming, racers tilt the Wii’s nunchukcontroller left and right to carve downhill.

Then, when jumping, you use the Wii remoteto draw — yes, draw — on-screen shapesthat become gravity-defying Uber moves.

As well as a single-player tournament,Blur has both split-screen and turn-basedmultiplayer play. And while videosnowboarding is a lot safer than the realthing, given the Wii-related injuries postedon YouTube, you still better move thecoffee table.

GOD OF WAR II PS2 “The Gods of Olympus haveabandoned me, now there is nohope,” growled Kratos, thebrutal but oddly sympathetic

anti-hero of 2005’s God of War,as he cast himself off the highestmountain in all of Greece. Andso began arguably the greatestof all PS2 action games.

The story then flashed back to a few weeks earlier, launching into hours of non-stop, hand-to-handviolence, puzzles, monsters andextraordinary visuals, whichexplained how Kratos, a formerchampion of the gods, hadcome to this sorry end. Ofcourse, since a sequel hasarrived — fatuous spoiler alert— he didn’t actually die in thefirst game. Now Kratos has re-upped for God of War II,likely the last significant gamefor any console of the now-fading class of 2000-2001.

In the original’s finale, oursociopathic Spartan with themountainous WWE muscles andcreepy full-body tattoos haddethroned Ares to become thenew Olympian god of war. Butas GoW II begins, Kratos is stilltortured by visions of the pastand driven by revenge. Andoops — he’s become a morevengeful and bloodier god thaneven ol’ Ares, who was notexactly Mister Rogers. Butwhile Greek gods may becompelling when they walkdown the red carpet at the

Oscars, omnipotence does not make for exciting gameplay,so our hard-hearted hero isquickly stripped of his powersand immortality.

Now, to end his continuedtorment, Kratos (did we mentionhe’s not a happy guy) mustjourney to the ends of the Earthand face more dark and violenthorrors drawn from Greekmythology. Happily for us, he’llstill face them with two hugeserrated blades welded to hishands with chains, and use thesame balletic-but-bloodycombat moves, like thedemurely named Plume ofPrometheus.

Speaking of gore, creativecarnage — not mindless killing,so much as intelligent mindlesskilling — is a God of Warhallmark. So this one’s going tobe rated “Mature” for suchvividly rendered delights asbroken necks, decapitations, bodies cleaved in two, wingsripped off, impaled eyeballsand, gasp, sexual situations. But like a Scorsese take on theancients, it’s all in service ofthe story — honest.

CASINO ROYALE ($42)This 21st Bond movie has adistinctly retro feel for manyreasons. It does away withelaborate CGI effects in favourof hand-to-hand combat. It’sbased on the very first bookabout Bond, written in 1953,and begins before he’s even a00 agent. Plus, it starts in blackand white.

But make no mistake, this is amodern spy story set very muchwithin today’s political climate.

Terrorism is the foe to beathere, as Bond’s target Le Chiffre(Mads Mikkelsen) hopes to fundterrorists with winnings from ahigh-stakes poker game. Bond, being an accomplished pokerplayer himself, is chosen to takeon Le Chiffre. Another very

modern touch comes when avideo of Bond killing asuspected terrorist who may, infact, have been unarmed endsup on the internet, causingmuch embarrassment for MI6.

The film also takes advantageof the fact that new Bond Daniel Craig is perhaps thesexiest 007 since Sean Conneryby emphasizing his love affairwith fellow agent Vesper Lynd

(Eva Green), even setting it upas the reason poor ol’ James hastrouble committing down the line.

Just some of the extras you’llfind on the DVD are “BecomingBond: An Intimate Look at howDaniel Craig Stepped into theRole of the 6th James Bond,”“James Bond: For Real: InsideLook at Action and Stunts,”“Bond Girls Are Forever: CloserLook at Bond’s Leading Ladies,”and the Chris Cornell musicvideo, “You Know My Name.”

HAPPY FEET ($36)Director George Miller broughtan odd pedigree to this animatedfeature about an adorableemperor penguin who justdoesn’t fit in. Miller’s big-screendirectorial debut was the post-apocalyptic Mel Gibson thrillerMad Max. Maybe that’s why thislatest entry into the cute-animal-

out-of-water genre had an edgethat raised it head and flippersabove most of its peers.

Elijah Wood voices Mumble,a penguin lad born without theability to sing. And that’s aproblem when you live in asociety where singing is the wayyou find a mate. Exiled from hisclan, Mumble is forced to wanderalone — until, that is, he hooksup with a much more acceptinggroup of Mexican penguins.Robin Williams turns in amemorable performance as theleader of those Mexican birdsand, if you’ve got good ears, listen for the voice of the lateSteve Irwin as an elephant seal.

The DVD features a whack ofbonus features, including“Mumble Meets a Blue Whale,”“A Happy Feet Moment,” “DanceLike a Penguin: Stomp to theBeat,” a couple of music videosand the Looney Tunes cartoon “I Love to Singa.”

Element CR-V Pilot Odyssey Ridgeline

The full line of Honda trucks may all look different and be built for different purposes, but they have one thing

in common: Every Honda truck is built on a rigid unibody frame. And, a unibody is stronger, safer, smoother, and

quieter-riding than traditional body-on-frame construction. After all, as good looking as Honda trucks are, it’s what’s

inside that counts. See the Element, Pilot, Odyssey, Ridgeline and the all-new CR-V inside, and out, at honda.ca.
