The First Year of Teaching is the Most Crucial
• New Teachers Feel:• Isolated• Vulnerable• Deeply concerned with how they will be
perceived• Afraid to ask for help
And we’re off!!!!
They are Hired:• Given a key• Told which room is theirs• Given no Support
They are Given the Worst Assignments
• They Feel Frightened• They Feel Humiliated• They are Given No Help• They want someone to give them
hope to tell them when their hardship will end.
WHAT WILL NOT PREPARE NEW TEACHERS?
• Teacher Education will not Prepare You
• Student Teaching will not Prepare You
• The District may/may not have Prepared You
Lack of Resources
• In schools, when teachers are given the necessary tools that are needed to instruct students and create a classroom environment that fosters student learning, teachers can effectively teach.
Lack of Resources
• Teachers of grades K-12 spend on average $475 of their own money on classroom materials and supplies annually, with elementary school teachers spending a significantly higher amount ($539) compared to middle ($393) and high ($427) school teachers.
Effective Professional Development
• In a classroom, it is the competencies of the teacher, and what the teacher can do that actually determines the success of a school and its students.
Peer Observation
• There is often little to no time for peer observations where teachers can learn from their colleagues.
WHAT WILL PREPARE NEW TEACHERS?
• Induction- In most districts, induction is a one-year program that will train and support you as you become an effective teacher
• New Teacher Academy- New teachers have seminars that allow them to express their concerns with other new teachers so that they do not feel intimidated and ways in which they can be helped.
WHAT’S THE SECRET TO SUCCESS FOR YOUR NEW
TEACHERS!!!• BEG!!!!!!!!!!• BORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!• STEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For Positive Results, Encourage New Teachers
to…-Work in a collegial manner with your
colleagues-Associate with and learn from
positive mentors-Join a professional organization-Continue to learn through classes,
workshops, conferences, in-service meetings, books, journals, tapes, and advanced degrees
Summary and Implications
• It is important that school district officials pay close attention to the trends that are currently affecting education. There are great teacher shortages across the country. For education to be such a topic of importance to most Americans, reform does not seem to focus on encouraging people to the profession or making it more attractive.
Survey
• Do you feel obligated to buy school supplies with your own money?
• Yes. I would feel guilty if I did not personally provide students with the supplies that aren't covered by the school's budget.
• Somewhat. Although I don't feel that it's my responsibility to purchase classroom items, I still choose to do so to keep my classroom adequately stocked.
• No. I do not use my personal money to buy school supplies. The funding should come from the school.
