In Sundsvall Sweden a wicked heat swept through

the streets leaving everyone in agony with the blaz-

ing heat and a horrifying headache. The heat did not

only effect the people but it also every electrical ap-

pliance. This was also happening to stoves, lights and

toasters. As each day continued on the heat became

stronger until at one very moment it became unbear-

able. Everyone collapsed to the floor until suddenly

everything went back to normal. The heat stopped,

the appliances turned off and everyone’s headache

had vanished into thin air. No one could understand

what was happening, but the weird occurrence did

not stop there. Suddenly people who had been dead

for months were rising from their graves.

A loving husband and a car-ing dad, these are only a few of the many qualities that can be said about David Ross. Liv-ing in Sweden in a small house happily married to his wife Eva, you could say David has an av-erage life. But for him it is the perfect life. All he needs is his wife Eva and his nine year old son Magnus. However, every-thing changed when his wife Eva was killed in a car acci-dent. David now feels as if his life is has been shattered into a million pieces. We now have an exclusive interview with David as he tells us how he will get through these tough times without his loving wife, and how he felt each step of the way.How was the relationship be-tween you and your wife Eva?Well I have known Eva my entire life she was my next door neighbor, my partner in school, my best friend, my ev-erything. Since the day I met her I knew one day she was go-ing to be my wife. Our relationship is probably the best of all our friends. We

rarely fight and if we do it is what movie we are going to watch or Whos going to leave the tip. She is my soul mate I want to be with her forever. What was going through your mind when you got the call saying your wife has passed away and you need to go to the hospital now? When I received the call I was at work, I was just handing someone a cold mug of beer when the phone rang. The phone rarely rings at work so I had no clue who it was. When I heard that Eva had been in an accident and was in criti-cal condition I went into a state of shock. It felt like my entire world had collapsed. She was my entire life I could not imagine life without her. I felt lonely, sad, depressed and could not come to real-ity that this had actually hap-pened to my poor sweet Eva. When your wife suddenly woke up from the dead were you scared or surprised, how were you feeling?

I was I was sitting holding Eva’s hand all I was thinking is how am I going to tell Mag-nus, what will he say? Until suddenly Eva’s hand squeezed tight against mine. I didn’t understand how it was hap-pening, she had not survived the accident and was lying peacefully in the hospital bed.

As I looked down at Eva’s hand it was twitching, I slowly raised my head to see that Eva’s eyes were both open and starring down at me. I did not feel scared nor fright-ened but as if I was dreaming. She was awake.

What were you thinking when the reporter came up to you and started asking you questions about your wife coming back to life?In all of my life I have never ever liked any report.

One more depending on a prayerAnd we all look awayPeople pretending every-whereIt’s just another day

There’s bullets flying through the airAnd they still carry onWe watch it happen over thereAnd then just turn it off

Hey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeahWe must stand togetherHey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeahThere’s no giving inHey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeahHand in hand foreverHey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeahThat’s when we all winHey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeahThat’s, that’s, that’s when we all winThat’s, that’s, that’s when we

all win

They tell us everything’s all rightAnd we just go alongHow can we fall asleep at nightWhen something’s clearly wrongWhen we could feed a starv-ing worldWith what we throw awayBut all we serve are empty wordsThat always taste the same

Hey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeahWe must stand togetherHey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeahThere’s no giving inHey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeahHand in hand foreverHey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeahThat’s when we all winHey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeahThat’s, that’s, that’s when we

all winHey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeahThat’s, that’s, that’s when we all win

The right thing to guide usIs right here inside usNo one can divide usWhen the light is nearly gone

But just like a heartbeatThe drum beat carries onAnd the drum beat carries onJust like a heartbeat

Hey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeahWe must stand togetherHey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeahThere’s no giving inHey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeahHand in hand foreverHey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeahThat’s when we all winHey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeahThat’s, that’s, that’s when we all win

Shakespeare once said, “To thine own self be true.” However, if you are a not a genuine person that should you still be true to yourself? The song When We All Stand Together has many similarities to my book. The song is trying to por-tray the thought that we need to change the way we look at the world. By this I mean we need to stop being so naive and selfish and start caring about the people who are less fortunate. In my book Handling the undead it is trying to illustrate the image of everyone working together and not just caring about their own problems but also everyone else’s. In the song it says, “One more depending on a prayer And we all look away.” The song it trying to evoke the emo-tion that people in the world need our help but don’t have the amount of support that they need to fix what is wrong. This idea is similar to what is happening in the book. Every-one is trying to find answers for their own problems, but if we all tried to work together we might find a stronger answer. My book and my song both have a very strong con-nection with each other, they both have say that people need to work together to find a better world.

Being yourself and speaking your mind is what we are taught from day one, but if deep down inside your My song When we all stand together has a very powerful message. It is trying to convey the impression that we are very selfish and people are dying because of our greed. For example in the song it says, “One more depending on a prayer and we all look away.” The artist is trying to show his opinion that even though we could help people and make their lives better we are too busy with our own lives that we don’t have enough time for other people. The song is trying to get people to change the way we are and to be more caring and less naive. It is also saying that we need to stand together and support each other. They are pretty much saying open your eyes and heart to world and work together.

I’m from silent towns unseen by preying eyes Harsh consequence and strict parents demanding - always

angry I’m from rushing water and jagged sharp rocks The smell of fresh grass lingering into my room

on sleepy dawns I’m from family dinners and grandma’s home cooked meatloaf mouth watering with its

irresistible smells and flavors My family bonds connected together by the strength of their love for each

other and indescribable secrets never to be spoken of again I am from smiling days enjoying a scorching

summer evening and dejected weeks full of rainy days filled with pain and sorrow Restless sleeps and

long empty grey streets filled with regrets and unfinished business

I am from depressed feelings of loneliness and sorrow and sad moments where the only thing that is

keeping me going is the light at the end of the tunnel An indescribably feeling changed at any moment

I am from lonely hours of waiting for answers and confused states of uncertainty The time I wait for

the news that can change my life I am from mysterious worlds and the wonders of the lifeless Even

though love is as strong as steel misfortunate events can change everything

I am from the warm cozy feeling of love in the air The moment when you know that life can’t be

anymore perfect I am from late movie nights with my true love and peaceful quiet mornings I am

from dusk and dawn As the sun rises over the mountain barley showing it brightens the sky with

pinks and blues and the astonishing sun sets where all you see is oranges, yellows and bright cheerful

colours I am from bubbly personalities and cheerful smiles The ringing of the children’s laughing

echoes through the streets

I am from hidden pathways with strangers lurking The unsteady feeling of walking through

darkened alleys at dusk I am from disbelief, astonishment of what my eyes are seeing The sad-

ness, emptiness, loneliness left with my wife’s passing I am from the uncertainty and the insecuri-

ty of my actions The consequences of my identity that haunt the path I walk I am from a puzzling

world that brings joy at moments and sorrow at others This is my life

“Dream as if you’ll live forever, live as if you’ll die tomorrow.” Life is too short. That is the life long lesson that you will never truly understand until some-one you love is gone. Handling the undead is trying to portray the image that life is unpredictable and you will never fully under-stand your purpose in life but to always live to the fullest. Even though life is short and full of uncertainty we must live life with no regrets and make ev-ery moment count. Be-cause you never know when something unex-pected can happen that will change your life forever. Handling the Undead has a suspense-ful, complex, thrilling plot and conveys the

underlying truth of the human condition. It always keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire book. I would not rec-ommend this book for the grade 8 curriculum but I would recommend this to any of the grade 8 students.

A small quiet town in Europe becomes over-whelmed with walking zombies. Handling the Undead always keeps you guessing and wanting to know more. Everywhere you turn you see lifeless zombies but where did they all come from, why are they here? Citizens around the city scramble to find answer and solve the problem that is lit-erally walking through their town. To complicate the situation even more each character is feeling

different emotions about the arrival of the walking dead. David feels lonely, frustrated and confused when his wife passes and comes back to life. Flora feels hopeless, undecided and unloved when her husband comes back to life bringing old memories that she was trying to for-get. The last point of view is Henry feeling guilty, broken and torn apart by the passing of his grand-son. This quote really re-lates with my book, “Even though we are all differ-ent, we are all the same at heart.” When the zombies walk the city streets they bring back memories that had laid dormant for months. Even though this book has an elaborate plot line I do not think this is appropriate for the grade 8 curriculum but it is a great read and I would recommend this book to any grade 8 student.

Page 11: 8JoelleMagizine

Your hearts racing, you can feel your pulse in your throat, you can barely breath, you get caught you snap your book closed. The thrill and anxiety can make what you read feel real. Handling the undead does exactly this. The rush of energy in an intense mo-ment. The suspense of a murder or the jolting feeling of reading the last page, all these feelings come alive when you read han-dling the undead. As you flip the page it leaves you wanting more, the suspense of each word keeps you on the edge of your seat. This is a quote from my book, “A grave-yard could be so densely popu-lated and yet it was the loneli-est place on earth.” This book is a whole new tack on the original idea of brain eating zombies. It’s unpredictable and always leaves you wanting more. Even though Handling the Undead is suspense-ful and keeps you wanting more, I do not think that is appropri-ate for the grade 8 curriculum

but I would recommend this book for all grade 8 students.

Books aren’t only there for our entertainment; there is a greater meaning behind each word that is written. Handling the Undead has a greater meaning behind the arriving of zombies it is about the human condition. It is trying to tell people that at any moment life can change and you can nev-er get it back. This thought it portrayed through the death of David’s wife Eva. She passes away and what David realizes that him and Eva did not spend the time they had together to the fullest. A lot of people spend their lives walking around being lifeless like a zombie, not living life to the fullest and just letting time pass. It really makes you think if what you do everyday is living your life to the fullest and nev-er letting time pass without be-ing well spent. Oscar Wilde once said, “To live is the rarest thing

“A graveyard could be so densely populated and yet it was the loneliest place on earth.”
