central nervous system
• control center of body
• incl:1.brain2.spinal cord
Brain &
Spinal Cord
central nervous system
brain
• contains about 100 billion neurons
3 mainregions of brain
cerebrum cerebellum brain stem
cerebrum
• largest part of brain
• interprets input from senses
• controls movement of skeletal muscles
• divided into right half & left half
– right half creativity & artistic ability
– left half math skills, speech, writing, logical thinking
cerebrum
cerebellum• muscular coordination
• balance
brainstem
• controls involuntary actions
–breathing, heartbeat
peripheral nervous system
• all the nerves located outside of central nervous system
• divided into 2 groups:
1. somatic system- controls voluntary actions
2. autonomic system- controls involuntary actions
reflex• automatic response that occurs
very rapidly & without conscious control
nervous system injuries
1. concussion= bruiselike injury of brain
2. spinal cord injury= spinal cord is cut or crushed
Ouch !!!!!
It may be a concussion????
