THE TIMES OF INDIA, MUMBAI FRIDAY, MAY 20, 2016 5 TIMES CITY Mumbai: As many as 20 cases of leptospirosis have been reported in the city since January, even before the monsoon has begun. The bacte- rial disease, transmitted from ani- mals, had wreaked havoc and sent the civic administration into a tizzy last July after 16 deaths were repor- ted in a span of two weeks. BMC’s executive health officer Dr Padmaja Keskar said that there is nothing to be alarmed as the ca- ses have come to light only because of better surveillance. “Wading through contaminated water is the commonest route of transmission, but not the only one. The bacteria can infect even if the- re is a breach in the skin or infected water is splashed in the eye,” she sa- id. There have been no deaths so far this year. “It is a precursor to what will happen in the monsoon if sewage and disposal practices are not cor- rected,” said Dr Om Srivastava, an infectious disease consultant. The city’s animal shelters will particularly be under close surveil- lance this monsoon, Keskar said. “This year, we will be prosecuting the shelter owners if we find that cattle has not been treated for lepto- spirosis. They have been given amp- le time,” she said. After last year’s outbreak, the BMC had tested the samples from more than 200 cattle sheds and fo- und out about the bacteria leptospi- ra’s thriving presence. The Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sci- ences University, which tested the urine samples, found that around 25% were positive for the bacteria. The infection spreads when the cattle’s contaminated urine or ex- creta gets mixed with water during monsoon and people wade through them. The shelter owners were sub- sequently told to treat their cattle. The BMC also plans to keep the domestic pet owners on their toes. The civic health department had appealed to citizens last year to get their pets treated or vaccinated af- ter two rare serogroups of leptospi- rosis were found responsible for at least 50% of the deaths in 2015. Me- dical literature shows that the rare sergroups, Tarassovi and Djasmin, can be transmitted by pigs, rats, go- ats and even dogs. A senior veterinary doctor told TOI that vaccination is not enough and pet owners should get their ani- mals treated. “The lepto vaccine protects against four serogroups only, while there are about 23 broad serogroups. The best option is to treat them or at least get them checked as many may not have any symptoms,” a doctor said.
