Relating Fractions, Decimals,
and Percents
Objective
• To convert a percent to a fraction or decimal and convert a fraction or a decimal to a percent.
• Why? To know how to relate numbers and integers in different ways that will help you to solve problems easier.
California State Standards NS 1.2 (Gr 5): Interpret percents as part of a
hundred: find decimal and percent equivalents for common fractions and explain why they represent the same value.
Vocabulary• Percent– A special ratio that compares a number with 100• Percent = “each hundred”• % = 1 0 0
– 100% = all work is used (1/1 or 100/100 or 5/5, etc.)
How to Change Fractions to Decimals to Percents (and any other way)
1)To convert a fraction to a decimal ... Divide2) To convert a decimal to a percent … move
the decimal 2 spaces to the right. Think of it as moving the decimal point into the % spot.
3) To convert a percent to a fraction … convert % back to a fraction and use place value. Reduce.
4) To convert a decimal to a fraction … use place value and reduce.
5) To convert a fraction to a percent … convert to a decimal then to a percent- moving the decimal two places to the right and place the % symbol.
6) To convert a percent to a decimal … move the % 2 spaces to the left and replace the % symbol with a decimal point (.)
1) ¾ = .75
2) .75 = 75%
3) 75% = 75/100 = ¾
4) .75 = 75/100 = ¾
5) ¾ = .75 = 75%

Objective Review • To convert a percent to a
fraction or decimal and convert a fraction or a decimal to a percent.
• Why? You now know how to relate numbers and integers in different ways that will help you to solve problems easier.
• Both a fraction and decimal can be written as a percent, and a percent can be written as a decimal or as a fraction.
Independent Practice
• Complete problems 6-13
• Copy original problem first.
• Show all work!
• If time, complete Mixed Review: 14-18
• If still more time, work on Accelerated Math.
