Lansing Kee was the visiting team and expected to perhaps be the first test of the season. Springville scored right away after recovering a Kee fumble, then they scored again after a turn over on downs. With a 14-0 lead in the 1st, Coach Martin reached into his bag of tricks and Allsup laid out a perfect onside kick. Cody Blake recovered it for the O’s and Sam Scriver hit Kolton Markley on the first play for a touch down. Kee would punt away their next possession and Springville would score on an Elias Nissen run up the middle. It was 28-0 at the end of the first quarter, but the Oriole’s were not done. While they only scored 1 touch down in the 2nd quarter, they held the ball for most of it, even facing 4th and 1 on the Kee 33 at one point. Springville went ahead 35-0 on a Nissen run and with Allsup’s PAT, half time came early as the clock began to run continuously. The second half opened with the O’s receiving and it took all of 2 minutes and 36 seconds for Nissen to find the end zone. Kee would punt away their next possession and Blake would get a carry on 2nd down and take it all the way for a score. With 4:42 in the 3rd quarter it was a 49-0 lead. The 4th quarter opened up with a Springville puntonly the second time this season that the word Springville and punt have been used in the same sentence. Kee would muster up a score on this drive but it would be their only score and with the clock ticking away, the ball game ended with a 49-6 Springville victory. Yet again, most of us were able to get our PJ’s on well before the start of Friday Night Lights. Nissen had 16 carries for 144 yards and 5 touch downs. Scriver was 3 for 4 in passing and tallied 66 yards. The Oriole’s had 280 yards of offense to Kee’s 131. I had to ask Coach Martin if he was a little surprised at the way in which the boys handled the Kee Hawks. “A little, yes. I also thought that if we played like we were capable it could be a game like HLV. I thought that they were going to be a step up in competition to what we had faced in the weeks before which I thought they were. However, I give our guys credit for coming out right at the onset and making sure we controlled the game. They had not had much trouble with teams because of their ability to be physical. Our guys made sure they were disciplined in defensive match-ups and more physical on offense”. The Kee QB made 19 pass attempts, connecting on only 3 of them. I asked Coach if that was part of his game plan and he said “Honestly, our game plan was to first stop their running game since that is their strong suit. Our guys up front were able to control the line of scrimmage all night which put them in passing situations. Our defensive backs, mainly Peter and Brian, did an outstanding job of doing their responsibilities and matched up well with their tight ends. Our linebackers, Elias and Cody, did a great job of finding their running backs in pass coverage as well”. And so the O’s will take their 5-0 record to Central City who is celebrating their homecoming this week. This game is tallied as the Tractor Bowl the winner takes home a trophy. That trophy has been in the O’s possession for ??? Seasons and is not likely to leave. Just how does Coach Martin plan to prepare for this week? “Preparing them for this game is not going to take much since it is a rival game. There has been a lot of talk about them gearing up for this game and our guys will be ready to take on the next challenge. We are going to do some things a little different to get the pace of the game going even faster on offense and want to try and confuse them with some looks on defense. They look to try and throw the ball so our pass defense has to be just as good as it was last week for us to succeed”. So there you have it Oriole fans, it’s a rivalry game, it’s another homecoming game, there is a trophy on the line and bragging rights along with it. Head on up Highway 13 Friday, JV kicks off at 5pm, and ah, JV is undefeated too. To the left, running around, through or over the defense; Elias Nissen Above, your undefeated Oriole Football team taking Allison Field Friday

HOMECOMING WEEK A SUCCESS

The parade was dazzling, the pep rally entertaining and the jersey auction expensive—and all events served as a great build up to the Friday night football game. LADY O’S PERFECT IN CONFERENCE PLAY

While it may be early, it is never too soon to give credit where it is due. The Lady O’s cracked the state rankings 2 weeks ago and opened up Tri-Rivers Conference action at home last Thursday when they hosted East Buchanan. While the girls gave up one set, they took 3 total to win their home opener (25-15, 25-21, 22-25, 25-15). On Saturday the ladies played in their own Invitational, winning 3rd place overall and getting big wins against Wilton (21-16, 23-21), South Winneshiek (21-18, 21-12) and Williamsburg (25-22, 25-15). Tuesday took them back to conference action and they travelled to face the always tough Maquoketa Valley Wildcats. The Lady O’s wasted little time in disposing of them in 3 straight sets (25-22, 25-16, 25-14). Springville is now 13-8 overall, 2-0 in conference play heading into Thursday’s match-up with new conference member Prince of Peace. Saturday the girls will play in a North Cedar tournament before returning home Tuesday to host rival Central City. Let’s go O’s!

To the left, you see why Sidney Hopkins is called “Hoppy”… here setting against Jesup. To the right, Tracy Kilburg celebrates a block in a win against Williamsburg.

JV FOOTBALL TEAM LIGHTING IT UP

Not only are the Varsity O’s undefeated, the JV squad is currently 4-0 as well—or 3 1/2, they played just 2 quarters against Kee on Friday, but won it 25-14. Previously, they beat HLV, Midland and then most recently, Elkader this past Monday. All the more reason to arrive in Central City promptly at 5pm so you can catch them in action. These future Varsity O’s are racking up their own yardage as they rip through their schedule this fall. Coaches Menster, Smalley, Smyth and Thorp have them fired up every week. Catch a game, they won’t disappoint you.

LITTLE O’S HIT THE BIG FIELD

Cornell College did a little remodeling this summer and it included all new turf on their football field. This past Sunday, both the 3rd/4th and 5th/6th football teams played games at their stadium. To start it off, the 3rd/4th grade team played a quick Iowa City team and dropped their first loss of the season, 12-0. The boys made it interesting at the end however as Rhenden Wagaman showed off his arm as he tossed it to playmate and playmaker Luke Menster. The boys drove the field but fell just short of scoring as time expired. What followed was a very physical match-up between the 5th/6th grade O’s and Meskwaki. The Warrior’s were big, I mean like, are you sure that isn’t their JV big? Springville held their own, matching each Meskwaki score, and it ended in a 12-12 tie.

To the right, Jacob Loehr hands off to Matt Carson and below, Nick Stuppi lays on one of MANY big hits.

WEEKLY PICKS CONTEST… Ok sports fans, here’s another week of 8-man football games, make your picks!

Clarksville at Tripoli Midland at West Central Easton Valley at Don Bosco Springville at Central City Here’s what you do, pick your winners and for the tie-breaker, predict the total points that will be scored in the LSU/Georgia football game. Make your picks and send them to [email protected] and check the next issue for the winner. Last week’s contest was another crazy one, many of you were 3 for 4, no one picked Rockford to beat Riceville, but it again came down to the tie-breaker; total points scored in the W. Michigan/Iowa game… Once again, Larry Riley won with his 55 point total, and the final as you may remember was 59-3. Congrats to Larry who repeats this week as the winner of Weekly Picks. Thanks for playing!

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK There’s some pretty crazy mascots out there, here’s your weekly dose of another school with an out of the ordinary nick name. Stuttgart, Arkansas is home of the Stuttgart Ricebirds. The public high school has an enrollment of just over 500 students and their school colors are maroon and white. They compete in all traditional sports as well as bowling and their football team holds 7 state championships, with the most recent one being just last year in 2012. A Ricebird refers to any bird known to eat grains and research showed just one other high school with the same nick name... El Campo High School in Texas.

CROSS COUNTRY RUNNERS KEEP “1 UPPING” THEMSELVES

Same headline, different week. Oriole runners continue to improve on their personal bests, at times before the ink even dries from the previous meet. Their most recent competition was at Center Point Tuesday where Coach Pershing reports they “had their best performances of the season”. Katelyn Gloeckner (pictured to the left) finished 5th overall for the girls, resetting her freshmen team record in a time of 16:18. Rachel Gloeckner improved her previous best time with a finish of 18:38. Sam Lorimer (pictured to the right) finished 14th and set a new freshmen team record for the boys in a time of 18:13. Brady Barner made his move at the end to pass 4 runners and finish in a time of 19:21. Nicely done O’s.

(Oriole Pride thanks Rich Lorimer for the photo’s)

THE FAMOUS AMONG US— OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT...

Call me crazy, but once in a while I see a Springville fan and I have to take a second look because they remind me of someone. Let’s consider Middle School Volleyball Coach Caitlin Wyman of Springville. Doesn’t she look just like Maria Shriver? As in the daughter of Sargent and Eunice—Eunice KENNEDY Shriver? The former Mrs. Schwarzenegger does bear a striking resemblance to our own, younger, Caitlin don’t you agree? Who is who? You decide.
