A personal note to the citizens of Linn County from Sheriff Tim Mueller

After over 29 years serving with the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, I have decided to hang up my guns, put my uniform away, and retire on December 31st of this year to spend more time with my family and explore a new venture; training and educating new officers, deputies and sheriffs. I look forward to this next chapter and the oppor-tunities it brings. It’s been a privilege to serve as your Sheriff the past eight years. I will miss working with my friends in the law enforcement community, the people of Linn County, the professionals in the news media, and especially the fine men and women of the Linn County Sheriff’s Office who give so much of themselves in the service of the people they are sworn to serve and protect. I’d like to thank my family, especially my wife Jean, who has always been there to keep me humble. I have recommended to the Board of Linn County Commissioners that they appoint my second in command, Undersheriff Bruce Riley, to the position of Sheriff upon my retirement. Bruce has been with the Sheriff’s Office for 26 years, and worked his way up through the ranks. He is a natural leader and has been my right hand man for over four and a half years as Undersheriff. He will continue the proud tradition of progres-sive, strong leadership of the Sheriff’s Office that partners with community leaders and members of the public to assure Linn County continues to be a great and safe place to live, work, and raise families. And to all of the citizens of Linn County; it truly has been my honor to have been your Sheriff. Thank you.

The American Pop Culture Class at Santiam High School has been rehearsing for the Great Pumpkin’s Ball to be held on October 19. These students, under the direc-tion of Ross Miller, have been perfecting three songs: “The Werewolves of London” which features four lead female vocalists; “The Purple People Eater” who only eats Purple People so no worries; and the great classic “The Monster Mash” featuring Chris Smith as the Mad Scientist. These numbers will be backed by the stellar guitar players taught by Terry Schnei-der and the music is amazing. Please plan to join us on October 19th for these brilliant performances by our local students. The Great Pumpkin’s Ball will be held in the High School Gym, admis-sion by your generous donation. This event is sponsored by Hearts To Arts, always creating new artistic venues in the Santiam Canyon!!!

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office Cadet Program was created to introduce young men and women to law enforcement and develop them as future leaders. Here’s a chance to experience, first hand, what it takes to be a Patrol Deputy, Parole & Probation Deputy, or Corrections Deputy. Many law enforcement officers, including our own Sheriff Jason Myers, have used their Cadet experiences to start a career in law enforcement. So, if you’re between 14 1/2 & 20 years of age, a citizen of the United States, and enrolled full-time in school with at least 2.5 grade point average, you may qualify to join our Cadet Program. Cadets are expected to have Internet access to aid in communicating with our Cadet Program Advisors. You’ll learn about teamwork and develop leadership skills while working with our Deputies. Selected applicants will participate in

an interview process and must pass a background investigation. Successful applicants will begin an 8-week Cadet Academy that starts in January. Classes are held on Saturdays. If interested, turn your application in by 5:00pm, October 30th. Once trained, you’ll ride along with deputies on patrol, participate in community relations programs, assist with traffic control & secu-rity, and learn more about the professions associated with the field of law enforcement. Cadets are expected to dedicate 20 hours of volunteer work each month. For more information, visit www.GoMcso.com and click on the Cadet Unit link for an application. You can also leave a voicemail at503-932-4850.

Burn Season Opens October 1Due to the recent rains the fall backyard burning season will open on October 1st. The Mill City Volunteer Fire Department wants you to remember to always call before you burn. The burn informa-tion number is 503 769 3400 and is updated daily at 8am. Call this number before you burn, they will tell you if it is a burn day and the hours that you can burn for that day. Burn days are regulated by the DEQ each day and there will be some days that burning is not allowed, so make sure you call each day that you want to burn.

Make sure that you do not leave your burn pile unattended and that you have a water source readily available in case it tries to get out of control. Keep your pile small, don’t try to burn huge piles that will burn for days at a time, that is how they get out of control. Make sure that you are only burning legal items on your burn pile, back-yard debris is all you should have on there, no plastics or garbage. For a brochure on what is legal to burn you can stop by the fire hall Monday – Friday 9am- 3pm. If you have any question please call the Mill City Fire Department at 503 897 2390

In Linn County 6% of eighth graders and 11% of eleventh graders report using prescription drugs without a doctor’s orders (Past 30-day use, Student Wellness Survey 2012). Many of these kids start by accessing their family medicine cabinet. For kids, prescription drugs may be appealing because they are easily accessible, they are “legal” and they are FDA-approved, so may be perceived as safe compared to illicit street drugs. In reality, abusing prescription medications even once can be as dangerous as abusing any illegal drug. Disposing of prescription drugs safely is one way to help keep kids safe. Taking pharmaceuticals to a drug drop-box is the best alterna-tive to flushing, which is not recommended. Albany drug disposal: The Albany Police offers a Drug Drop-Box

in the department lobby where citizens may drop off any unwanted or expired over-the-counter or prescription medications for safe disposal. Police personnel collect and destroy the medications in a safe and legal manner by incinerating them at a nearby facility. Medications may be dropped off 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Albany Police Department is located at 1117 Jackson Street S.E. in Albany. For more information contact Community Educa-tion Specialist Sandy Roberts at 541-917-3206. Lebanon drug disposal: In Lebanon, a drop box is available from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Lebanon Justice Center at 40 North 2nd Street. The department will accept any medications except needles. The drugs are collected from the box and inciner-ated.

A few lucky 8th grade girls from Mari-Linn School took a trip to Philomath last week to play some hard core volleyball against the Braves. They won 1 of 3 games, with near win on the final match thanks to the impressive serving action of Trinity Saunders. Earlier in match 2, Shere’e Donahue (not pictured) packed her own series of powerful serves that had the other team scrambling. The girls joined the Stayton Middle School Wildcats this year since there were not enough kids to make a team at Mari-Linn. Pictured: Skye Lowe, Kayla Ritchie, Trinity Saunders, Lyndsey DeSantis, and Shelby Flatt.

Mill City Market Place plagued by shoplifters

“We will prosecute,” says manager Sandi Stegemann

On September 19th a young man walked into the market in Mill City, stuffed a bottle of Advil (tm) in his pocket, and walked out the door Later the staff, most of life long local residents examined the footage from the video surveillance tapes in an effort to identify the thief, yet no one recognized the culprit. Then again, just this Tuesday, the same man walked through the store, grabbed two cans of Camo Beer, and boldly strode out the front door with staff in pursuit. They were unable to apprehend, but this time a Linn County Deputy was able to identify him, and pursue arrest. “This is really getting to be a problem, people walk right in and take things with no remorse. People move into our town with no job, no vehicle no social services,” said Sandi Stegemann, market manager. Recently a man walked into the store with a bundle of winning lottery tickets to redeem, however the state system is smarter than the bad guys in this instance. Those tickets were stolen earlier that month from a different location and had been tracked. Again the culprit got away, but again his image was caught on camera. “We will prosecute,” said Stegemann, “those criminals are cost-ing us all money.”
