Kenny Baker, called “the greatest fiddler in bluegrass,” died July 8, 2011, at age 85. Baker, longtime member of Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys, played at Homecoming for several years with the late dobro master Josh Graves. An East Kentucky native, Baker lived near Gallatin, Tennessee. In 1993, he received a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1999, he was named to the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Honor in Owensboro, Ky.

Ken Collins, Knoxville, Tennessee, was an avid bluegrass musician who performed with the late fiddler Bitt Rouse and the Union County Ramblers at numerous Homecomings. Ken was a banjo builder, antique car enthusiast, U.S. Navy veteran, and Oak Ridge National Laboratories retiree. He passed away July 3, 2011, at age 87.

Jean Peters was a Museum of Appalachia "treasure." Her daily trips to the Museum's gift shop to repair broken toys and restock new ones were a ritual the entire staff enjoyed. She was one of the very first artisans to exhibit her work in the gift shop and the Homecoming. Her patient demonstration of Appalachian folk toys delighted throngs of children and adults alike. After more than three decades of toy making, “Granny Peters” died at the age of 82 on March 1, 2011.

Jack Sebring of Norris, Tenn., sang in the Irwin Chapel Log Church with the Appalachian Harmonizers for many a Homecoming. His first love was souls of the lost—and he also loved bluegrass music. He was a U.S. Army veteran and retired from Y-12, Oak Ridge National Laboratories. He died July 14, 2011, at age 72.

Loretta Stooksbury of Andersonville, Tennessee, passed away March 10, 2011, at age 70. With her sister Barbara Young, Loretta demonstrated the art of scrubbing clothes on an old-fashioned washboard at Homecomings. The sisters continued the tradition after the passing of their mother, Alverta Stooksbury, the original washboard demonstrator.

Harley “Sunshine Slim” Sweet of Heiskell, Tenn., went to play in the Lord’s country music band on May 30, 2011, at age 92. A guitar player and singer, Slim participated in Homecomings for many years. He was a member of the WNOX Mid-Day Merry-Go-Round, a live country music show that first aired in 1938. He was a U.S. Navy Seabee, serving in the South Pacific during World War II.

Walt Whinnery, of Louisville, Ky., participated as a leather craftsman for more than 25 years at the Tennessee Fall Homecoming. He died March 13, 2011, at age 82. Walt was a member of The National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association for 35 years, participating as a leather worker at national meets. He was a retired salesman and Air Force veteran.
