The Village of Sintra, classified as World Heritage by UNESCO, is found on the northern side of the mountain range which bears its name and ends abruptly at the impressive cliffs of Roca Cape, the westernmost point of Europe.
Thanks to its privileged geographical location, the Sintra Mountain Range is characterized by a specific microclimate that feeds the exotic romanticism of the landscape, concentrating hundreds of flowers and trees in gardens and forests of unparalleled beauty.
Built at 1640 ft. above sea level, the Pena Palace was inspired by the Bavaria palaces. The Pena Palace is a magnificent example of Portuguese architecture from the romanticism era due to its extremely fanciful structure. It was built in 1839, when King Consort Ferdinand II of Saxe Coburg and Gotha acquired the ruins of the Monastery Jerónimo Nossa Senhora da Pena and started adapting them to a palace.
Also known as Town Palace or Royal Palace, the Sintra National Palace stands at the Republic Square, at the core of Sintra’s historic center. The palace has two monumental cone-shaped chimneys coming from the kitchen that dominates the skyline of the village. Of Arabic origin, the palace was the residence of the Portuguese royal family for eight centuries from the 12th century onwards, being the only surviving royal palace from the Middle Ages.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Regaleira Palace was the brainchild of its owner, António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, and of the Italian architect Luigi Manini. From dream to reality, the result is a unique creation filled with magical retreats and details that do not hide the union between national history and the mythical and esoteric side, inevitably linked to the Sintra Mountain Range.
Constructed by an English millionaire, Francis Cook, in the 19th century, the Monserrate Palace is known as one of the best examples of architecture of the Romantic period in Sintra and a testimony of the eclectic spirit of 19th century. With strong English inspirations, it is also known to have one of the richest botanical gardens in Portugal with its exotic trees, waterfalls and lakes.
Constructed in the late 18th century by Daniel Gildemeester, then Consul of Netherland in Portugal, the Seteais Palace - which is currently a hotel - has a current design, after the expansion work that it went through in the early 19th century. It is a neoclassical palace and its project is attributed to the architect José da Costa e Silva, within the renaissance values of Neopalladianism.
The Moorish Castle or Castle of Sintra, as it is also known, of Muslim foundation, dates to the 9th century, the Islamic ruling era and the achievements of King Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal. Curiously no battle was fought here, since its functions would not be the defense of Village of Sintra itself, but rather the vigilance of Lisbon and its surroundings.
