Opening: Robert Irwin at Dia:Beacon

Light and Space artist Robert Irwin presents hisExcursus: Homage to the Square3 at Dia:Beacon (amuseum whose masterplan he created), 15 years afterits first iteration premiered at Dia Center for the Artsin New York City. The original piece, Prologue: x183,

was created as a tribute to artist Josef Albers's painting series Homage to the Square, and similarlyfeatured fluorescent lights installed in 18 maze-like chambers. Excursus will be on view atDia:Beacon for two years.

Curator and writer Alison Gingeras will be moderating a discussion between artists Cecily Brown,Rosy Keyser, and Joan Semmel. The conversation is presented in honor of Brown's show "TheEnglish Garden" and Keyser's "The Hell Bitch" at Maccarone and Joan Semmel's survey at AlexanderGray Associates.

THURSDAY, JUNE 4

Screening: U.S. premiere of MASBEDO's The Lack at Lincoln Center

Italian video artists MASBEDO directed this film, which has been selected for the Film Society ofLincoln Center's annual showcase "Open Roads: New Italian Cinema." The group's first feature film,written along with Iranian artist Mitra Divshali, premiered at the 2014 Venice Film Festival andfeatures six female protagonists (Eve, Xiu, Greta, Anja, Nour, and Sarah) with concurrent storieswho "search for meaning to fill the inner void in their lives." Each story disregards the normalperimeters of time, and features backgrounds of "harsh [Aeolean] landscapes that are bothapocalyptic and regenerative," according to a release. MASBEDO will be present for a QA after thescreening.

This group show featuring Al Held, Paul Jenkins, Lee Krasner, Yayoi Kusama, and Milton Resnickhonors four of the most important painters of the 20th century, and Yayoi Kusama, who has takenPop art into wonderfully strange territory. Not to be missed.

Robert Miller Gallery, 524 West 26th Street, 10 a.m.--6 p.m.Opening: Ester Partegàs at FoxyProduction

Ester Partegàs's fourth solo show at Foxy, "The Passerby," will feature two new sculpture seriesinspired by "objects so ubiquitous they are virtually invisible," such as tarpaulins, buckets,containers, and labels, according to a press release. This mundane class of objects, referred to as the"infra-ordinary" by writer Georges Perec, are morphed into objects worthy of contemplation byvirtue of their location, the gallery space. In a larger sense, Partegàs is asking us to look beyond the"illusion of the everyday."

Opening: Adam Winner at Josée Bienvenu Gallery

The artist's first solo New York show is called "Scratchpad," and features a series of abstract oil onlinen paintings that depict Winner's "distorted, subjective notion of his body, and the externalmanifestations of internal conflict," an idea that surfaces less often in artwork created by men.

THURSDAY, JUNE 4Symposium: Art Crime Symposium at NYU School of Law

NYU's School of Professional Studies is hosting a three-day symposium on the rapidly growingmarket for stolen art and fraudulent reproductions. According to a release, "art crime ranks as thethird-largest criminal enterprise in the world" and many U.S. arts institutions, museums, anduniversities are frequently confronted with the issue of repatriation of stolen or looted works. Itcontinues through Saturday. The first day will be devoted to theft and fraud; the second day isdedicated to "looting and spoliation"; and the third day will feature talks on fakes and forgeries.

SCRAAATCH no. 9 will be performed by performance art duo SCRAAATCH. Live sound processingand performative notation are combined to create an "intricate physical and aural choreography,"which touches on the universal difficulty of communication.

Opening: "Storylines: Contemporary Art at the Guggenheim" at the Guggenheim

Bringing together upwards of 100 works from the museum's permanent collection, "Storylines"celebrates the way contemporary artists use installation, painting, photography, sculpture, video,appropriation, and performance to tell stories, with or without the classical use of plot, character,setting, and so forth. The individual experience, whether as creator or consumer, is emphasized inthis show, echoing the phenomenon of contemporary art in the age of social media. The earliestworks in this show were created during the 1990s, though most were made after 2005.
