The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) has declared the start of the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP).
From Tuesday 1 October 2013 until Monday 31 March 2014 any person wishing to light a fire within the Balranald Local Government Area WILL REQUIRE A PERMIT, however, even with a permit it is necessary to check whether a Total Fire Ban is in force before lighting fires. Serious penalties including fines and/or imprisonment can be imposed for failing to adhere to safety measures.
“People now need to be extremely careful when
using fire”, said Lower Western District Manager Superintendent Steve Walker. “The RFS encourages all residents to continue with their fire hazard reduction activities and ensure their properties are properly prepared for the bush fire season”.
Superintendent Walker is encouraging residents to have a Bush Fire Survival Plan. Bush Fire Survival Plans can be downloaded from the RFS website www.rfs.nsw.gov.au
