Additional Safety Instructions For Bandsaws

No list of safety guidelines can be com-plete. Every shop environment is different.Always consider safety first, as it applies toyour individual working conditions. Usethis and other machinery with caution andrespect. Failure to do so could result inserious personal injury, damage to equip-ment or poor work results.

6. Always feed stock evenly and smoothly.Do not force or twist blade while cutting, especially when sawing small radii.

7. This machine is not designed to cut metalor other material except wood.

8. When replacing blades, make sure teethface down towards the table. The force ofthe cut is always down.

9. Habits – good and bad – are hard to break.Develop good habits in your shop andsafety will become second-nature to you.

10. Do not manually stop or slow blade afterturning the saw off.

1. Do not operate your bandsaw with dull orbadly worn blades. Dull blades requiremore effort to use and are difficult to con-trol. Inspect blades before each use.

2. Never position fingers or thumbs in linewith the cut. Serious personal injury couldoccur.

3. Always support round stock in a V-block.

4. Ensure that the machine sits firmly on thefloor before use. Any “wobbles” must becorrected by shimming or blocking beforeoperation.

5. Make sure blade has been properly ten-sioned.

Like all power tools, there is danger associ-ated with the Model G1052 9" Bandsaw. Usethe tool with respect and caution to lessenthe possibility of mechanical damage oroperator injury. If normal safety precau-tions are overlooked or ignored, seriousinjury may occur.

110V Operation

SECTION 2: CIRCUIT REQUIREMENTS

The Model G1052 has a 1/2 HP motor which oper-ates at 110V. It includes a complete cordset witha grounded plug that’s made for use with agrounded domestic 110V outlet.

The G1052 motor will safely draw about 8 ampsat 110V under load. If you operate the bandsawon any circuit that is already close to its capacity,it might blow a fuse or trip a circuit breaker. However, if an unusual load does not exist, andpower failure still occurs, have the circuit inspect-ed by a qualified electrician.

The Model G1052 should be fused at 15 amps.Fusing at amperage ratings higher than 15 ampswill not adequately protect the motor. You arecautioned that equipment that is returned to usfor service that shows evidence of being over-fused will be repaired or replaced totally at thecustomer’s expense, regardless of the presentwarranty status.

Fusing

Figure 1. Recommended outlet/plug configuration.

If you find it necessary to use an extension cordwith the Model G1052, make sure the cord israted Hard Service (grade S) or better. Refer tothe chart in the standard safety instructions todetermine the minimum gauge for the extensioncord. The extension cord must also contain aground wire and plug pin. Always repair orreplace extension cords when they become wornor damaged.

Extension CordsGrounding

This equipment must be grounded, there isa risk of severe electrical shock. Verify thatany existing electrical outlet and circuit youintend to plug into is actually grounded. If it isnot, it will be necessary to run a separate 14A.W.G. copper grounding wire from the outletto a known ground. Consult a qualified electri-cian if you are uncertain of the grounding ofyour electrical system. Under no circum-stances should the grounding pin from anythree-pronged plug be removed. Seriousinjury may occur.

In the event of an electrical short, groundingreduces the risk of electric shock by providing apath of least resistance to disperse electric cur-rent. This tool is equipped with a power cordwhich has an equipment grounding conductor. The outlet must be properly installed and ground-ed in accordance with local codes. Refer toFigure 1 for the proper outlet and plug configura-tion.

Clean Up

The unpainted surfaces are coated with a waxyoil to protect it from corrosion during shipment.Remove this protective coating with with a sol-vent cleaner or citrus-based degreaser. Avoidchlorine-based solvents as they may damagepainted surfaces should they come in contact.Always follow the usage instructions on the prod-uct you choose for clean up.

Some die-cut metal parts may have sharpedges (called “flashing”) on them after theyare formed. Please examine the edges of alldie-cut metal parts before handling them.Failure to do so could result in injury.

Site Considerations

BENCH LOADYour G1052 Bandsaw represents a moderatelylarge weight load in a small footprint. Most com-mercial or home shop benches should be suffi-cient to carry the weight of the G1052. If youquestion the strength of your workbench, you canopt to reinforce it, or consider placing the band-saw on a freestanding bench like Grizzly’s ShopFox® tool table.

WORKING CLEARANCESWorking clearances can be thought of as the dis-tances between machines and obstacles thatallow safe operation of every machine withoutlimitation. Consider existing and anticipatedmachine needs, size of material to be processedthrough each machine, and space for auxiliarystands and/or work tables. Also consider the rel-ative position of each machine to one another forefficient material handling. Be sure to allow your-self sufficient room to safely run your machines inany foreseeable operation.

LIGHTING AND OUTLETSLighting should be bright enough to eliminateshadow and prevent eye strain. Electrical circuitsshould be dedicated or large enough to handlecombined motor amp loads. Outlets should belocated near each machine so power or exten-sion cords are not obstructing high-traffic areas.Be sure to observe local electrical codes for prop-er installation of new lighting, outlets, or circuits.

Make your shop “child safe”. Ensure thatyour workplace is inaccessible to young-sters by closing and locking all entranceswhen you are away. Never allow visitors inyour shop when assembling, adjusting oroperating equipment.

Many of the solvents commonly used toclean machinery can be highly flammable, and toxic when inhaled or ingested. Alwayswork in well-ventilated areas far from poten-tial ignition sources when dealing with sol-vents. Use care when disposing of wasterags and towels to be sure they do not cre-ate fire or environmental hazards. Keep chil-dren and animals safely away when clean-ing and assembling this machine.

Do not use gasoline or other petroleum-based solvents to remove this protectivecoating. These products generally have lowflash points which makes them extremelyflammable. A risk of explosion and burningexists if these products are used. Seriouspersonal injury may occur.

Blade Adjustments

Blade tension and tracking are two of the mostimportant factors affecting bandsaw perfor-mance. When the blade is properly tensioned andtracked, blade life will be extended, cuts will bestraighter, and the bandsaw will run moresmoothly. In order to optimize tension and track-ing, the two wheels must be co-planar (or in thesame plane).

Follow the steps outlined here in the order pre-sented for best results: (A) adjust tension, (B)check co-planarity, (C) adjust co-planarity (D)check tracking, and (E) adjust tracking.

Figure 4. Checking blade deflection.

Blades are extremely sharp. Use added carewhen making adjustments that requiretouching the blade with your fingers. Failureto do so could result in serious personalinjury.

Tension

With the exception of those procedureswhich require test running the machine, DONOT attempt adjustments without ensuringthat the machine is turned off and discon-nected from its power source. Serious per-sonal injury may occur.

SECTION 5: ADJUSTMENTS

1. The power must be off with the sawunplugged. Lower the upper guide assemblyall the way by loosening the guide postsecuring knob (#31) and lowering theassembly.

2. Press, with moderate pressure, on the faceof the blade with your thumb. Figure 4.

3. The blade should flex no more than 1/2" withmoderate pressure.

4. If it flexes too little or too much, turn the ten-sion adjustment knob (#2) to modify the ten-sion until it is correct.

If the tension seems correct, make the otheradjustments to the saw and test run it. Re-adjusttension if the blade does not cut correctly.

1. Adjust the tracking knob (#23) so that upperwheel is not angled.

2. Set a straightedge against the sides of thewheels. It should fully extend across both ofthem. Figure 5.

3. The straightedge must touch each of the out-side rims on both wheels. If the straightedgedoes not touch both wheels evenly, use asmall ruler to measure the distance that thelower or upper wheel is offset from the longstraightedge.

If the straightedge already touches the wheelsevenly, move on to the tracking procedures.

5. Loosen the four cap screws (#10) thatsecure the two sliding gibs (#9) to the bodybehind the upper wheel. Figure 7.

6. Adjust the setscrews (#11) in or out veryslightly (over adjustment will cause the ten-sion rod to bind) to make the upper wheelparallel with the lower wheel.

7. Tighten the four cap screws and checkwheel co-planarity.

8. Repeat 1- 4 for further adjustment if needed.

The distance you measured with the small ruleris the distance that the wheels must be corrected. The following steps allow you to align the wheels. If one step works, immediately proceed to thetracking adjustment instructions.

Tracking Blade Guides

Rotate the upper wheel several turns by hand.Watch the lateral movement of the blade on thetire. The blade will move back and forth slightlyuntil it finds its equilibrium position. If the blade istracking correctly, it will stay on both tires in onelocation, not necessarily in the center of thewheels. If the blade will not stay in one place onthe tires, check that the wheels are co-planar. Ifthey are co-planar, adjust the tracking, as fol-lows:

1. Disconnect the bandsaw from the powersource and adjust the upper and lower guidebearings away from the blade. See BladeGuide adjustment section.

2. Decrease the tension slightly before adjust-ing tracking. Tracking adjustment will auto-matically increase the tension.

3. Loosen the lock knob (#22) on the trackingcontrol knob. Turn the tracking control knobclockwise or counter-clockwise while turningthe upper wheel by hand until the bladestays in one position. Figure 8.

4. Re-tighten the lock knob and check thetracking. Repeat step 3 as needed.

The guide post is adjustable so the guide bear-ings will stay aligned with the blade when theguide post is raised or lowered.

To check guide post alignment:

1. Adjust blade tension and tracking as dis-cussed earlier in this section.

2. Loosen the guide post securing knob (#31)and slide the guide post all the way up. Lockit in position by tightening the securing knob.

3. Adjust each of the upper guide bearingsequally to within approximately 1⁄16" of theblade.

4. Slide the guide post all the way down andlock it in position. If one of the upper guidebearings is closer or further from the bladethan in step 3, adjust the guide post bracket(#27).

To adjust the guide post bracket:

1. Loosen the two bracket bolts securing theguide post bracket (#27) to the body casting.Figure 16.

2. Shift the guide post bracket in the desireddirection.

3. Re-tighten the two bolts and check yourresults by sliding the guide post up and downand noting whether the bearings changetheir distances from the blade. It may benecessary to re-adjust the guide bearings. Ifthe guide bearings do not maintain gap tol-erance on each side of the blade as youraise and lower the guide post, repeat steps1 and 2.

If the guide post bracket will not give enoughadjustment, you will need to shift the blade overslightly.

To shift the blade:

1. Loosen tension on the blade.

2. Move the upper wheel left or right as need-ed. There is about 5/16" of movement.

3. Re-adjust the tension. This will secure thewheel.

4. Repeat guide post bracket adjustments.

SECTION 6: OPERATIONS

Overview

The bandsaw is one of the most versatile woodcutting tools in the shop. It is capable of perform-ing many different cutting functions including, butnot limited to:

STRAIGHT CUTS

1. Miters2. Angles3. Compound Angles4. Resawing

IRREGULAR CUTS1. Simple and Complex Curves2. Duplicate Parts3. Circles4. Beveled Curves

Although you can perform many types of straightcuts such as angling and mitering on the band-saw, they will not be as precise as on a table saw. Also, since the blade is flexible, the resulting cutis somewhat rougher than one performed on atable saw. However, just as a table saw is suitedto precision straight cuts and miters, the bandsawexcels when resawing and when cutting irregularshapes. A properly adjusted and tuned up band-saw is also safer to operate than most other sawsand is capable of performing many sawing func-tions with ease and accuracy.

A common fault when using a bandsaw is blam-ing the saw for not performing up to expectations. Many factors contribute to a bandsaw’s perfor-mance. Using the wrong kind of blade or a poorquality blade usually results in unsatisfactory per-formance. Misuse of the saw or using incorrectsawing techniques can be unsafe as well asresult in frustration and poor cuts. Remember, theblade does the cutting with the operator’s guid-ance. Replace blades as necessary and makeadjustments periodically to keep the saw alwaysrunning in top condition.

Do not force the material against the blade, uselight even pressure. Light contact with the bladewill permit easier line following and preventundue friction, heat and work-hardening alongthe back edge of the blade.

Avoid twisting the blade by trying to turn sharpcorners. Remember, you must saw around cor-ners.

Test Run

Once you have completed the instructions forassembly and adjustments, you are ready to givethe Model G1052 its first test run.

1. Re-connect the Model G1052 to its powersource.

2. Keeping one finger on the OFF switch to beready for a quick shut off in the case of prob-lems, turn on the bandsaw.

3. If there is no visual or audible evidence ofproblems, use a piece of scrap wood to testthe blade.

4. If the blade does not cut properly, review thesteps in the adjustment section. If the bladeappears to be working well, turn off themachine and continue reading the manual.

NOTICESet the top guide assembly just above thetop of the work at all times.

A bandsaw blade is a delicate piece of steel thatis subjected to tremendous stress. Be sure youuse quality blades of the proper width for the var-ious types of cutting operations.

Always use the widest blade possible for theworkpiece you are cutting. Use narrow bladesonly for sawing small, abrupt curves and for fine, delicate work. Bandsaw blades measuring 64"can be purchased welded, set, sharpened, andready-for-use from most saw shops. In addition tothe standard 1/2" blade, others in widths of 3/16",1/4", and 3/8" are available. See Figure 15 for typ-ical bandsaw blade characteristics. Please referto our current catalog for prices and orderinginformation.

Always select high-quality saw blades andchoose the right blade for the job. Poor qualityblades and improper use are often the cause ofpremature blade failure.

Many conditions may cause a bandsaw blade tobreak. Blade breakage is sometimes unavoidablesince it is the natural result of the large stressesthat bandsaw blades are subjected to.

Blade breakage is also due to avoidable causes.Avoidable breakage is most often the result ofpoor care or judgement on the part of the opera-tor when mounting or adjusting the blade or sup-port guides. The most common causes of bladebreakage are: (1) faulty alignment and adjust-ment of the guides; (2) forcing or twisting a wideblade around a curve or short radius; (3) feedingtoo fast; (4) tooth dullness or absence of suffi-cient set; (5) excessive tension; (6) upper bladeguide assembly set too high above the work-piece; (7) using a blade with a lumpy or improp-erly finished weld; and, (8) continuously runningthe bandsaw when not in use.

Blade Information

Ripping, or resawing, is the process of cutting aboard into two or more thinner boards. The max-imum board width that can be resawn is limited bythe maximum cutting height of the bandsaw.Maximum cutting height for this bandsaw is 41/8".

The G1052 bandsaw is capable of ripping, pro-vided the saw is set up properly. Use commonsense when ripping. Attempting to rip too wide ortoo dense a board may put excessive strain onthe blade and be dangerous.

The important consideration when ripping isblade selection. Generally, the wider blade, thebetter. In most applications, a hook or skip toothstyle will be sufficient. Also, since most rippedlumber will be planed or sanded smooth, you canchoose blades with fewer teeth-per-inch. Whileblades with fewer teeth-per-inch produce roughercuts, these types of blades offer larger gulletcapacities for clearing sawdust, less heat buildup, and yield more horsepower per tooth.

Ripping

1. The bandsaw must be adjusted correctly.See Blade Adjustment Section.

2. The table must be square to the blade. SeeTable Adjustment Section.

3. Use the widest blade available. The blademust also be in good condition.

4. Use a fence to guide work.

5. Draw a reference line on the edge of theboard.

6. Support ends of the board if necessary.

7. Feed work slowly and evenly.

Cutting Curves

When cutting curves, simultaneously feed andturn the stock carefully so that the blade followsthe layout line without being twisted. If a curve isso abrupt that it is necessary to repeatedly backup and cut a new kerf, use either a narrowerblade or a blade with more set. A blade with moreset can cut relatively tighter radii, though the cutis usually rougher than cuts produced by a bladewith medium set.

Always make short cuts first, then proceed to thelonger cuts. Relief cuts will also reduce thechance that the blade will be pinched or twisted.Relief cuts are cuts made through the waste por-tion of the workpiece and are stopped at the lay-out line. As you cut along the layout line, wastewood is released from the workpiece, alleviatingany pressure on the back of the blade. Relief cutsalso make backing the workpiece out easier, ifneeded.

Stacked Cuts

One of the benefits of a bandsaw is its ability tocut multiple copies of a particular shape by stack-ing a number of workpieces together.

Before making stacked cuts, it is essential toensure that both the table and the blade are prop-erly adjusted to 90°. Otherwise, any error will becompounded with each piece cut from the top tothe bottom of the stack.

To complete a stacked cut:

1. Align your pieces from top to bottom toensure that each piece has adequate scrapto provide a clean, unhampered cut.

2. Using brads in the waste portion of eachpiece, secure all the pieces together.

3. Lay out the shape you intend to cut on theface of the top piece.

4. Make relief cuts perpendicular to the outlineof your intended shape in areas wherechanges in blade direction could strain thewoodgrain or cause the blade kerf to bind.

5. Cut the stack of pieces as though you werecutting a single piece. Follow you layout linewith the blade kerf on the waste side of yourline.

Crosscutting

In addition to its ability to rip lumber, the bandsawis capable of crosscutting lumber as thick as 41/8".Use the miter gauge when making straight cross-cuts to push your workpiece through the blade.

When making angled crosscuts, adjust the mitergauge to the angle you desire and use it to guideyour workpiece along the blade.

If your workpiece is cylindrical, you will need a V-groove jig to support the material you wish to cut.

SECTION 7: MAINTENANCE

Shielded and pre-lubricated ball bearings requireno lubrication for the life of the bearings. All bear-ings are standard sizes and replacements can bepurchased from our parts department or yourlocal bearing supply store.

As for other items on this machine, such asadjustment controls, an occasional “shot” of lightoil is just about all that is necessary. Beforeapplying, however, wipe off any sawdust with aclean cloth or towel and spray on the lubricant.

Make a habit of inspecting your bandsaw eachtime you use it. Check for the following conditionsand repair or replace when necessary.

1. Loose mounting bolts.

2. Worn switch.

3. Worn or damaged cords and plugs.

4. Any other condition that could hamper thesafe operation of this machine.

The table and other non-painted surfaces on theModel G1052 should be protected against rustand pitting. Wiping the saw clean after every useensures that moisture from wood dust isn’tallowed to trap moisture against bare metal sur-faces.

Most experienced woodworkers recommendusing automotive paste wax on exposed steeland cast iron surfaces. The wax provides a layerof protection, as well as reducing friction betweenlumber and the table, making cuts faster andsmoother.

Avoid waxes that contain silicone or other syn-thetic ingredients. These materials can find theirway into lumber that’s being worked, and canmake staining and finishing difficult. If you usepaste wax, make sure that it’s 100% Carnaubawax.

DO NOT make adjustments or attempt main-tenance procedures while the Model G1052is running. Ensure that the switch is off, power is disconnected and moving partshave stopped before making adjustments.Failure to comply may result in serious per-sonal injury.
