The heart is such a mysterious muscle that few are able to understand it or even realize its vast importance to everyday life. A muscle that holds the entire liveli-hood of mankind has many functions and liabilities that allow human beings to participate in everyday, normal undertakings.

The heart beats almost two and a half billion times in a human’s lifespan. With a 24-hour job! The heart never rests once in its mission. It weighs approximately 10.5-11 ounces and is only about the size of a human fist. In the womb, the heart resides at the center of the infant’s chest before it shifts down into the cavity where we all know it to be now.

An infant’s heart beats faster than an adult’s. Beating

almost 120 times per minute, an infant’s accelerated heartbeat is necessary to deliver the oxygen a newborn life needs. This accelerated speed decreases as an in-dividual grows older, from almost 90 beats at the age of seven, to nearly 70 beats at the age of 18.

The heart is divided into two halves, and those halves are separated into chambers, which allows the muscle to deliver oxygen and blood throughout the body.

Science has yet to create synthetic blood. Conse-quently, patients who require blood transfusions and undertake life-threatening surgeries deepened on anonymous volunteer donors to supply their needs. However, in America, studies show only three out of 100 people donate blood. Yet those who have donated

have seen that only one pint of their own blood can save up to three people’s lives. This touching information has inspired people to act and to give to a blood drive when they can to ensure the survival of another.

The University of West Alabama is celebrating February as National Heart Month. It will be hosting a free blood pressure check February 13-16 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Bibb Graves, Wallace Hall and the Cafeteria but also providing a blood drive February 15-16 from 12:30-4:30 p.m. in the Student Union Building Lobby.

Another name for Val-entine’s Day has always been “Single Awareness Day.” Always used as a derogatory name for the holiday, why not take “S.A.D.” and make it something to enjoy? Valentine’s Day is not just all about candlelit dinners with that special someone or gifts of chocolate and stuffed animals. It’s time for all the singles out there to become their own sweethearts, buy them-selves some chocolate and huge teddy bear, and curl up with a few of their favorite video games.

Most college students own gaming systems; it’s a fact. Whether it’s an Xbox360, a Playstation 2 or 3, or a Wii, students own them.

Singles who want to have fun on Valentine’s Day should grab the latest release of Call of Duty or Dead-space and get playing.

To complement the gameplay, students can play their favorite music in the background.

Those who are not into music and video games can watch movies. The perfect Valentine’s Day movies will make being single more of a celebration than being in a relationship. For instance, “My Bloody Valentine” or “Dance of the Dead” make any night one to remem-ber, alone or not.

Students who do not enjoy gore or zombies may want to abstain from the previously mentioned games and movies. People who find comfort in watching romance or romantic comedy movies should stick to films, such as “The Notebook,” “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” or “10 Things I Hate About You.”

Students who are single but take pride in the more optimistic parts of life can buy some two or three dollar boxes of Valentine’s cards and give them out to people they pass during the day. Students could even make themselves a Valentine’s Day card; it may seem sad, but on the bright side, it’s like having their own sweet-hearts that won’t cheat on them.

There are plenty of activities to do if one is single on

the day of the year when being a couple is empha-sized; it just takes a bit of imagination. Of course,typical plans for singles on Valentine’s Day include going to the club with friends, a night in with a huge tub of ice cream and the saddest love stories ever created, or a night playing board games with family or friends.

Whatever happens this Valentine’s, be sure to stay safe and try not to be to upset about being single again.

While some have been enjoying a rather season-able winter, many countries in Europe have been struggling to cope with a tremendously dangerous cold snap. Post-snow rains caused a dam to collapse in Bulgaria, flooding a village and claiming at least four lives. Four more fatalities have been reported as a result of floods in south Bulgaria, along with 10 missing. Across the continent, Europeans have been digging out from heavy snow after a relentless seven days of temperatures as low as negative 36 degrees Celsius.

Traffic has proven to be utterly chaotic, with numer-ous roads being shut down entirely, and airports being forced to close, leaving thousands trapped in remote Balkan villages.

Those in the Netherlands have attempted to make the best of the harsh conditions, engaging in the first ice skating race in more than a decade. Roman children have greatly enjoyed the rare opportunity to see snowfall, and Bosnia’s capital city of Sarajevo organized a winter “Olympics” on the spur of the mo-ment that saw main streets being boarded down and participants leaping from windows onto the deep snow banks.

Regardless of the potential pleasure to be found in the conditions, the Serbian government declared a state of emergency on Sunday, stating that the snow-fall had jeopardized day-to-day activities. Emergency officials have reported that at least 70,000 people were cut off due to the weather conditions.

The National Weather Service predicts that the freezing temperatures will continue at least until Friday.

Unemployment rates have skyrocketed in the past decade all over the world. Along with unemployment going up, social services have received cuts and so have housing benefits. Many think it’s only happening in the U.S., but this country is not the only one suffer-ing. On Feb. 6, 2012, a protest held by volunteers of a pressure group caused shock in a town in Spain. Said volunteers were part of a group called Berri-Otxoak and took part in the protest of “Via Crucis”; this term means “Way of the Cross.” The volunteers wore white cloths attached to white string around their waists and carried crosses throughout the town. A sign at-tached to the wood read: “The town hall buries social rights.” Volunteers acted out against the social servic-es cuts and the reduction in housing benefits, along with the enormous unemployment rate. According to Berri-Otxoak, the coastal Spanish Basque town of Barakaldo, the location where the protest took place, has an an 18 percent unemployment rate; in the last year, the benefits budget has been reduced by half. The last reported rate of unemployment in Spain as a whole was 21.5 percent with 4.9 million people out of a job.

Following a kidnapping of a Mexican ambassador to Venezuela and his wife, two men and a woman suspected in participating were arrested on Feb. 2, 2012. Ambassador Carlos Pujalte was seized by four armed men while he and his wife were leaving a party shortly before midnight in Venezuela’s capital city.

The prosecutor-general’s office announced that Juan Pacheco, Oswald Leon, and Mayurki Barreto had been detained. Unfortunately for the country, Venezuela has recently boasted one of the highest murder rates in the world, with a disturbing increase in the number of kidnappings in recent years.

Long time American hardcore band and Metal Blade Records’ powerhouse Unearth released their fifth studio album, “Darkness in the Light,” on July 5, 2011. The album was recorded in Unearth’s home state in Westfield, Mass. early 2011 at Zing Studios. Longtime guitarist of Killswitch Engage and famed producer Adam Dutkiewicz was called on to produce his fourth album for Unearth. “Darkness in the Light” is everything you would come to expect from an Unearth album: thundering drums, heavy riff driven guitar, shredding guitar solos and bellowing vocal growls. From the moment this album starts with the first track “Arise the War Cry,” you are exposed to the usual thrash-type speed metal flowing into a brutal hard-core breakdown that has become trademark with most Unearth songs over the years. “Eyes of Black,” the third track, contains some of the catchiest and riff-age of any of the album tracks, along with solos and breakdowns to boot. Track number six, “Coming of the Dark,” is another

noteworthy track showcasing the band’s potential even further when things start getting good around the one minute and forty-five second mark with some more groovy riffs that bleed into a ripping solo showcasing more of the immense talent of guitarists Buzz McGrath and Ken Susi. Track number nine, “Disillusion,” is easily the heaviest number on the whole album, with power-ing drums and the most brutal breakdown of the whole album occurring around the minute and forty second mark. This is one track not to miss. Unearth announced a 2012 tour across parts of Australia and Europe in sup-port of their new album, with dates backed up all the way until August. This is undoubtedly Unearth’s best work since their 2003 release “The Oncoming Storm” and most notably vocalist Trevor Phipps best work too date. Anyone who is into thrash, speed, or hardcore metal will find this album too be a delight, so stop waiting around and give it a listen!

The state of Alabama has spent over $10 billion on trying to get rid of illegal immigrants. State officials believe that by spending so much to keep immi-grants out, they will be able to make more jobs for people who are actually citizens of the United States and save around $200 million. So far though, the plan has backfired. Since thousands of immigrants have tried to relocate out of Alabama more than 80,000 jobs have been vacated. Consequently, the state has lost around $264 million.

An Amtrak train in Michigan flew off its track after hitting a truck. Seventy-three people were on board the train at the time of the incident. Ten people went to the hospital; luckily, none were seriously injured. The same cannot be said for the truck, which was stuck to the tracks. Since the tracks were “injured” as well, Amtrak is offering an alternative way to get back and forth from Ann Arbor to Jackson. The people who were aboard this particular train are being offered the opportunity to reschedule or to get refunds.

for San Luis, Ariz., city council due to her apparent lack of proficiency in the English language. A Yuma County Superior Court Judge explained that there was a “large gap” between Cabrera’s proficiency and what is required to serve as a public official.

Cabrera has appealed the decision, stating, “I speak English and I read and I write. I know my Eng-lish is not proficient, but I can understand and I can answer.”

San Luiz, a small town hugging the Arizona-Mexico border, has become embroiled in debate over this decision. Cabrera’s grasp on English may be ques-tionable; however, her Spanish is fluent, “For San Luis, it is enough,” Cabrera said.

The Occupy Wall-Street movement was met with unique resistance when several protestors attempted to “Occupy” Washington D.C. Numerous police offi-cers mounted horses in order to clear the demonstra-tors from downtown’s McPherson Square. For months, McPherson’s no-camping rule was not enforced, allowing the protestors to remain there since last Oc-tober. Before dawn on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, officials moved in to begin the delayed enforcement of the law. By the day’s end, the police had scuffled with numerous demonstrators and had moved all but one out of the park. While the demonstrators referred to this as a “full force eviction” and claimed that they were beaten with batons, the police maintain that they were simply enforcing the rules of the park. The National Park Service repeatedly warned the protestors that this, or a similar confrontation, would happen if they continued to ignore the explicit no-camping rule.

There’s nothing new or particularly original about a love song. Usually, syrupy sweet ballads full of declara-tions of undying faith, dreams of eternal companionship, and resolutions to weather any storm, the love song has been a staple in songwriting long before recorded mu-sic. Today, artists such as Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey have set the standard for musical romance with their seemingly endless array of powerful ballads.

However no performer has managed to capture the sheer intensity, the urgency, the life-or-death nature of the mystery known as love as well as the legendary Meat Loaf. While certainly a far cry from the popular image of the most romantic man in the world, Meat Loaf, through the songs of long time collaborator Jim Steinman (who, ironically would eventually contribute songs to artists such as Celine Dion), is indisputably the king of undying devotion. “Oh baby you’re the only thing in this old world that’s pure and good and right, and wherever you are and wherever you go, there’s always gonna be some light,” he laments with urgent sincerity in the title track of his quintessential album, “Bat Out of Hell.”

Meat Loaf is certainly not all roses and candy and eternal bliss. Following a heated teenaged parking lot encounter in “Paradise by the Dashboard Light,” Meat Loaf pledges his devotion to his significant other “until the end of time.” However, in the end, both young lovers find themselves, “praying for the end of time, so I can end my time with you.”

Meat Loaf is the man with an answer for everything, so guys looking forward to romance-filled Valentine’s Day evenings would do well to take notes. If that pivotal mo-ment, the moment where the only word left to say is the vaunted “L” word, should cause one to suddenly lose all grasp on language, look no further than Meat Loaf for the world’s best excuse: “You took the words right out of my mouth, oh it must’ve been while you were kissing me, well I swear it’s true, I was just about to say I love you.”

For those who find themselves seeking company just for the sake of company on this upcoming celebra-tion to all things love, “Bat Out of Hell” can still be quite relevant. After all, as Meat Loaf sings mournfully, “I want you, I need you, but there ain’t no way I’m ever gonna love you, now don’t be sad, ‘cause two out of three ain’t bad.”

Musically, “Bat Out of Hell” is a bombastic, over-the-top album with pounding pianos, blistering guitars, and an unmistakable sense of humor and theatrical quality that causes most rock purists to shy away. It’s certainly not a typical love album. Its borderline disturbing imag-ery often explores the darker aspects of the complexities of love. Meat Loaf would later collaborate with Steinman

for a very fitting sequel to this album, “Bat out of Hell II: Back Into Hell.”

Following the unpredictable “Royal Rumble” pay-per-view, the WWE continued to pull out all the stops with the Jan. 31, 2012, edition of “Raw.” In addition to laying the foundation for what looks to be a CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho program for “Wrestlemania XXVVIII,” the legend-ary grappler, The Undertaker, returned after nearly a year off of television.

The Undertaker’s incomparable pro-wrestling career began long before Vince McMahon hired the 6’11”, red-headed freak of nature. Prior to his arrival in Mc-Mahon’s company, Mark Calaway appeared for rival promotion, WCW. Wrestling as “Mean” Mark Callous, the future icon famously teamed with “Dangerous” Danny Spivey to form “The Skyscrapers,” a tag team that the company hoped to match up against their tremendous-ly popular tag champions “The Legion of Doom.” Follow-ing Spivey’s unexpected departure from WCW, Calaway found himself thrust into the role of a singles wrestler, which never got much of a chance to develop before the company cut their losses and sent him packing.

At the time, it must have seemed like the greatest possible disappointment Calaway could have endured. However, following a meeting with Vince McMahon, Calaway would step into the role that has defined his professional wrestling career for over twenty years. De-buting at the 1990 “Survivor Series” event, The Undertaker was a character like none other in the wrestling world. Clad in a black hat, black trenchcoat, and grey mortu-ary gloves, The Undertaker struck legitimate fear into the early ‘90s wrestling audience. Children were openly terri-fied, often to the point of tears, as The Undertaker slowly made his way to the ring, accompanied by his aptly named manager, Paul Bearer.

Just one year into his career, The Undertaker was presented with an opportunity that most wrestlers only

dream about. He was to headline the 1991 edition of “Survivor Series” against Hulk Hogan, the most popular, most recognizable, and biggest wrestling star of all time. While most longtime fans would have predicted yet another win for The Hulkster, the WWE did the unthink-able when The Undertaker pinned Hogan in the middle

of the ring for his first World Title. Sure, there was Ric Flair’s assistance in the match, and Hulk Hogan would get his title back from The Undertaker mere days later at the “Tuesday in Texas” event; however, a very bold state-ment had been made at the “Survivor Series.” For the first time, wrestling fans were forced to watch as Hulk Hogan was outmatched by his dastardly foe. If it wasn’t clear before, it should have been very clear at this point that The Undertaker was going to be around for awhile.

Over twenty years later, wrestling fans are preparing for what looks to be the final send off of a legend. The Undertaker will defend his unprecedented 19-0 “Wres-tlemania” undefeated streak against company man extraordinaire, Hunter Hearst Helmsley. Triple H, who has twice failed to break The Taker’s legendary streak at the show of shows, showed little reaction upon witnessing the shocking return of The Undertaker on “Raw.” Rather than extreme fear, or outright retreat, Triple H simply pat-ted The Undertaker on the back and left the ring. With over a month to go until the twenty-eighth anniversary of “Wrestlemania,” there is plenty of time for this story to unfold on WWE television. Will Triple H be forced to place his career on the line, like his partner Shawn Michaels at “Wrestlemania XXVI”? Will Shawn Michaels involve himself in this encounter, and if so, will it be to stop Triple H from breaking a streak that he couldn’t, or to do away with The Undertaker once and for all? These questions and more should be answered as the Super Bowl of wrestling quickly approaches. One thing is certain: when the dust settles and The Undertaker finally walks away from a business that he has been a part of for an entire lifetime, he will be remembered, appreciated, and respected perpetually for his many contributions to the sport.

McCartney has received many honors, a special award for Outstanding Contribution to Music at the 2008 BRIT Awards, an MTV Icon Award, multiple Grammy Awards, the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, GQ’s Man of the Year, and an honorary doctorate of music from Yale University, among others.

This year opened doors for McCartney. His concerts in Peru and Rio de Janeiro’s Estádio Olimpico João Havelange were his first to be broadcast live on the Internet throughout Latin America. More than 1.5 million online fans bought tickets to witness his magic. On Tuesday, Feb. 28, the College of Liberal Arts will host special guest Dr. Jipang Yang, a Fulbright scholar from Beijing, China, who will lecture on Diver-sity in Chinese Culture.

Yang’s American name is Amy, and she currently is with the University of Vir-ginia’s English Department. She is also an associate English professor at the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. Yang is interested in South-ern American women writers, such as Flannery O’Conner, and twenti-eth century American Literature. She has three degrees, two in English and American Literature and one in English Linguis-tics and Literature.

Fulbright scholars come from all over the world, including China, like Yang, Israel, Spain and Brazil. The Fulbright Scholar Program is funded by the U. S. De-partment of State and has

three branches. The Schol-ar in Residence program allows overseas scholars to come to America and teach on campus for one or two terms. The Visiting Fulbright Scholar Program gives overseas scholars the chance to do research and lecture in the United States for three months to a year. The Occasional Lecturer Program, through which Yang will be visiting UWA, gives travel awards

to Fulbright Scholars to travel to campuses for short lectures. UWA has four visiting scholars this year, including Dr. Catatli-na Ulrich, who came on Jan. 18; Dr. Sibusiso Vil-Nkomo, who will be here Feb. 9; Dr. Jipang Yang, who will arrive on Feb. 28; and lastly, Dr. Santiago Castroviejo Fisher, who will come on March 15.

a tale for the story booksAn epic tale of a man

inhabiting the persona of his grandfather, “The Fallen Prince,” is sure to please every viewer. The one-man-play’s main character is Donald P. Stone who dwells in the persona of his grandfa-ther, Dr. William James Echols. Stone desiress to “kindle

with a pale glimmer the passion of days gone by” with the music of Roland Hayes and the poetry of Sterling Brown. Stone tells the tale of the historic Snow Hill Normal and Industrial Institute in rural Wilcox County, Ala., which was founded in 1893 by Dr. William

James Echols for the descendants of African slaves. Stone’s grandfa-ther also established an agricultural elementary and high school that grew to encompass a campus of 27 buildings, 35 staff members, and over 400 students. The Snow Hill Normal and Industrial Institute was listed on the National Register of historic Places in 1995. The Sumter County Fine Arts Council headed by Dr. David Taylor, will be presenting “The Fallen Prince” this Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7:30 p.m. on the UWA cam-pus in the famed Bibb Graves Auditorium. For UWA students and SC-FAC members, admission is free. General admis-sion is $10 for adults and $2 for students.

Every New Year comes with its celebrations of the past year and for future success throughout the upcoming year.

However, the most demoralizing aspect of the New Year could be paying taxes to the government.

VITA volunteer Dustin Bush states that “tax season is one of the most stressful times of the year,” but having a helpful per-son to assist one through the tiring process of filing out tax forms can make the New Year as uplifting as the celebrations.

The University of West Alabama has a tremen-

dous service, VITA, for all taxpayers who need to file their taxes. The most impor-tant characteristic about this service is that it is free.

VITA provides free income tax return prepa-ration and free e-filing for individuals. Students at UWA who are pursuing a degree in accounting and have been certified by the IRS will prepare your tax return.

The VITA clinic is located in UWA Wallace Hall room 214 and is open on Mon-day from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Tuesday from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m., and Thursday from 2:00 to 6 p.m.

Those who want to take advantage of this free service should bring W-2s, 1099s, and 1098T (students), Social Security Cards for dependents, and a copy of last year’s tax return, if available.

VITA is also introducing a new program, called FAST, for the 2012 filing season.

This program empowers taxpayers to do their own returns using TurboTax, Tax-Slayer, or H&R Block, which will lead to self-sufficiency in future tax preparations.

With a little under four minutes to go in the game, the New England Patriots were forced to punt the ball. That punt was fair-caught on the 12 yard line by the New York Giants. The events that followed that punt would lead to an incredible 21-17 win for the Giants over the New Eng-land Patriots on Sunday in Indianapolis in Super Bowl XLVI.

The very next play, Eli Manning completed a nearly impossible 38 yard pass to Mario Manningham. The pass had to fit perfectly in to the tiniest of windows between two Patriots defenders, Patrick Chung and Sterling Moore, just for Manningham to have enough space on the sideline to drag both his feet inbounds to have a catch according to NFL rules. The reception is already being touted as one of the best in Super Bowl history.

The game-winning drive continued with eight more plays for 50 more yards and chewed 2:49 minutes of game clock. Ahmed Bradshaw capped the drive with the go ahead touchdown and left just under a minute left on the game clock. A unique thing about the Brad-shaw touchdown was that the Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick instructed his defense to part wider than the Hudson River in New York City.

Tom Brady would go on to complete two of his next seven passes, excluding the ball spike to stop the clock, and watch his last second “hail Mary” attempt fall to the ground. Already considered a first ballot hall of famer, Brady needed this win to put himself in elite company as far as Super Bowl wins are concerned. A victory on Sunday would have allowed Brady to match Pittsburgh Steelers’ legend Terry Bradshaw with four Super Bowl victories. Instead, Brady and the Pa-triots will have to wait another year to get that fourth Super Bowl win with head coach Bill Belichick.

No other quarter-back and coach combination has more regular season wins

than the 124 victories that belong to Brady and Belichick. The duo has also been to the most championship games in the Super Bowl era with five separate appearances. However, the two now have to face the reality that they have lost two straight title games to another great duo in Eli Manning and his coach Tom Coughlin.

For Coughlin, his second Super Bowl win may finally get him off the yearly hot seat that he has been on nearly every season in New York. At one point this season, the Giants had a 7-7 record, and Coughlin faced everyday rumors from the New York City media of impending termination as head coach of the Giants. Instead of folding under pressure, Coughlin was able to guide his team to regular season victories over the same stadium rival, the New York Jets, and then they beat the Dallas Cowboys just to make the playoffs. Once in the playoffs, Coughlin’s tough defense strategies were able to hold all of the Giants playoff foes to 20 points or fewer. Included in those foes is NFL Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers, who, at quarterback, guided his team to an NFL leading 35 points per game this season. The win on Sunday was about redemption for Tom Coughlin, but for Eli Manning, it was about making a statement.

In the city where his big brother is currently the star player, Eli Manning won his second NFL Championship game and his second Super Bowl MVP honor. Both of

these accomplishments make him the leader of the Manning family quarterbacking tree. He has one more championship and MVP honor than Peyton Manning and two more than his father, Archie Manning, who was the signal caller for the New Orleans Saints the major-ity of his career from 1971 to 1982. With two wins in two championship appearances, Manning matches former Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders quarterback Jim Plunkett with the 2-0 record. The win also finally gets Eli Manning the recognition as one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL today. Only he, Brady, and Steelers’ quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, have multiple Super Bowl wins cur-rently in the NFL. Now Eli has to be in the conversation as one of the best today, especially considering that both of these wins were over Tom Brady and the Patriots and gave Brady his only losses in the Super Bowl.

Eli was simply phenomenal in Super Bowl XLVI. He completed 30 of 40 passes for 296 yards and a touch-down. Most importantly, he did not turn the ball over. In fact, the Giants as a team did not turn the ball over. They came very close, however, with two fumbles and an-other fumble that was negated by a Patriots penalty, but all of them resulted with the Giants keeping possession. Aside from the tough pass and catch to Manningham and the touchdown pass to Victor Cruz, Eli did just what he always does, which is to make solid decisions with passes to the tight end and outside passes to open wide receivers. Nothing else was forced. That is how most of the season has been for Eli. Other than the season

finale against the Dallas Cowboys, Eli had his best statistical game. The Super Bowl triumph was

a prototypical win for Manning and has cemented his legacy as a great

quarterback of this era. This win has also started the talk

of him being one of the greatest to ever play

the game, just like his big brother.

Are you on a budget this Valentine's Day? Are you limited to a microwave in your cozy dorm room but still want to surprise your partner with an amazing meal? Here is a menu that can be

reproduced with a microwave and items from local grocery stores.Bon apetite!

five star cuisine from a microwave

starterhoney mustard salad

3 cups of lettuce or salad greens

1 avocado, diced

2 apples, diced

½ cup chopped nuts

honey mustard salad dressing

entreequiche loraine a la microwave

Pre-made pie crust

6 slices pre-cooked bacon, chopped

3 eggs

1 1/2 cups milk

1/4 teaspoon thyme or salt

1 1/2 cups shredded Swiss cheese

Remove pie crust from metal tin and place in microwave-safe glass pie dish.

Any glass dish can be used if you break up the pie crust and use the pieces to line the bottom of the dish.

Mix the eggs, milk, thyme or salt, chopped bacon, and shredded Swiss cheese with a fork or whisk until all ingredients are evenly mixed. Pour the ingredients into the pie crust and microwave on high for 10 minutes. If the eggs are still wet, heat for an additional two minutes and repeat until eggs are no longer wet.

The worldwide food giant McDonald’s decided to incorporate consumers in a twitter campaign by creat-ing a hash tag called #McDstories. Instead of receiving positive feedback, consumers used the hash tag to bash McDonald’s. McDonald’s tweeted positive remarks, such as“Meet some of the hard-working people dedicated to providing McDs with quality food every day #McD-Stories,” while consumers responded with negative and often insulting comments about employees and the Mc-Donald’s food quality. In a trending topic all over twitter, McDonalds very soon lost this campaign like a sunken ship. Major advertisers like McDonald’s may be less likely to use social networking to hawk their wares when they can no longer control the message

Valentine’s Day, like many other modern mainstream holidays, began as a religious observance before becoming the over-commercialized spectacle that it is today. According to history.com, “Approximately 150 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine’s Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas.”

In Rome from 268-270 A.D., Claudius II, also known as Clau-dius the Goth, was the ruler of the land and his ways of ruling were not very popular (thus his short term in office). One of Claudius’ less popular man-

dates was that his warriors should not be married, nor should they “interact” with women. As one might imag-ine, this edict did not go over well with the warriors or the women. Enter St. Valentine. Valentine felt compelled to marry the otherwise ostracized young love birds. Eventu-ally, Valentine, brazen with love, attempted to convert Claudius II to Christianity. Claudius II thwarted such advances and beheaded Valentine on Feb. 14, 269. Ac-cording to catholic.org, Valentine is the “Patron Saint of affianced couples, bee keepers, engaged couples, epi-lepsy, fainting, greetings, happy marriages, love, lovers, plague, travelers, and young people. He is represented in pictures with birds and roses. The first representation of Saint Valentine appeared in a The Nuremberg Chronicle, a great illustrated book printed in 1493.”

Little is actually known about the saint whose feast

day is celebrated by so many unaware people each year. Despite a plethora of evidence suggesting the authenticity of a real-life man named Valentine who was martyred for helping Christians under the rule of Claudius II, there is still some confusion in the Catholic church as to if St. Valentine is just one man or a blend of men. The man behind the holiday has been described as “a priest in Rome, a bishop of Interamna, and a martyr in the Roman providence of Africa.” For those not well versed in ancient geography, this would mean he was three different men.

As with other notably Christian holidays, there are naysayers who say that Valentine’s Day is nothing more than “an attempt to supersede the pagan holiday of Lupercalia” as instigated in fourteenth century England by Geoffrey Chaucer and his buddies. Regardless of where you stand on who St. Valentine may or may not have been, the holiday is seen as a positive celebration commemorated by children with gifts of teddy bears and candy hearts, and who doesn’t like candy hearts?

Coach Craig Roden led the University of West Alabama women’s basketball team to a win over Alabama-Hunts-ville on Saturday. Brittany Weathers and Lanita Futrell both knocked down two three-pointers in the first half to get the momentum in the game started. Anticipation built from the bench when the Tigers came through with 11 points in the first half. In the first half, the Lady Tigers had the biggest lead of the game by 15 points. At the end of the half UWA was up 31-19. UWA was giving UNA a claw for this game. The second half was underway with Weathers and Nikkia Jordan knock-ing down three-pointers to keep the momentum up. These shots helped the Lady Tigers maintain their lead and pull out the victory over UNA with the final score, 69-54. The Lady Tigers will be hosting Christian Brothers Thursday at 5:30 and Delta State Saturday at 4:00. The player of the week was Nikkia Jordan, who helped lead the team to the victory and end the six game losing streak.

The University of West Alabama men’s basketball team fell short to UAH on Thursday 68-55. It was a tough game, and

if there had been more time, a victory could have been pulled out. On Saturday, the male Tigers also fell short to UNA 65-56. Last week was a tough week. Hopefully, the Tigers will come out strong this week as they host Christian Brothers Thursday at 7:30 and Delta State Saturday at 2:00. The player of the week was Alquan Mendenhall, who scored several three-pointers during the games, to help build the team’s momentum.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, a man who for many years could legitimately claim to be living the American dream, has recently been the subject of a very public, and very messy divorce from his longtime wife, Maria Shriver. Schwarzenegger’s antics have been a favorite subject of tabloids since they became public; however, upon further examination of Mr. Schwarzenegger’s body of work, perhaps this was something the public should have seen coming.

Look no further than “True Lies.” The action-packed James Cameron flick sees Schwarzenegger weave a tapestry of deceit so complex that even the most unethi-cal of lawyers would find impossible to follow. Arnold’s character isn’t a newlywed, either; he’s got a young Eliza Dushku for a daughter in the film. He’s out sav-ing the world, commandeering the horses of mounted police, dancing the tango with actresses who haven’t found reputable work since, all while Jamie Lee Curtis slaves over birthday meals that ultimately are left to sit out in the cold; as the movie teaches, terrorists are ter-ribly inconsiderate.

Arnold takes things a step further in the movies. Rather than father a child out of wedlock, he unleashes a com-plex FBI sting operation once he grows the slightest bit suspicious that Jamie Lee may be cheating on him. In a bizarre move that perhaps only a husband who believes himself to be scorned could understand, Arnold employs his unwitting wife, who has obviously become extraordi-narily domesticated after years of doing battle with the sinister Michael Myers (the horror icon, not the actor).

Oddly enough, fiction mirrors reality when it comes to “True Lies.” Arnold was only ever misleading his family for the greater good, protecting their safety against terror-

ists, and ensuring himself a peaceful home life away from work. But unfortunately, even for Arnold, a man who has done battle with The Predator, a man who has pre-vented the end of the world by tackling Satan, himself, lies just don’t pay off when it comes to love. Jamie Lee Curtis gets kidnapped, and Eliza Dushku is forced into a situation that would make anyone with a fear of heights die of an instantaneous heart attack.

Giving credit where it’s due, Schwarzenegger finan-cially supported his lovechild, something that many fathers fail to do, whether or not they’re married into the Kennedy family. While it’s impossible to ignore the fact that his political aspirations may have been in mind, Schwarzenegger probably saved Shriver a much larger media storm had he chosen to come clean while still serving as Governor of California.

As a fan, one can only hope that the Austrian Oak rebounds from this latest disaster. An upcoming role in the “Expendables 2,” alongside the mythical Chuck Nor-ris, will likely do him many favors, as it is said that being in the presence of Chuck Norris for extended periods of time can lead to brief bouts of enlightenment.

In 1975, General Foods put an amaz-ing new candy on the market. “Pop Rocks” were tiny bits of fruit-flavored candy containing very small amounts of carbonation. Saliva released the car-bonation, causing a popping sound that was very audible. By 1979, rumors had spread that “Mikey,” a child star who starred in a popular Quaker Life cereal commercial, had died after eating a handful of Pop Rocks and washing them down with a carbonated beverage. The rapid influx of carbonation was so great, people said, that “Mikey’s” stomach exploded.

32-year-old native of Oak Lawn, Ill., was using a nail gun in his workshop when it recoiled near his head. Thinking that the point of the gun had made contact with his head and then returned to the “ready” position, Dante completed the project he was working on. Later that evening, he looked in the bathroom mirror and noticed a round cut on his forehead. His fiancé, Gail Glaenzer, cleaned the wound with perox-ide, and Dante went to bed. The next day, Dante awoke from a nap, feeling nauseated. Gail realized that Dante’s injury was probably more serious than she had

originally thought, so she drove him to Advocate Christ Medical Centre in Oak

Lawn. The emergency room doctor recommended that Dante’s skull be X-rayed. The X-ray technician gasped when she saw an 8.3 cm nail in the middle of Dante’s brain, perilously close to the part of the brain that controls mo-tor functions. The doctor explained that Dante did not feel any pain be-cause there are no nerves in the brain. During the ambulance ride between hospitals for surgery, Dante posted the amazing-X-

ray of his skull on Facebook. Surgeons safely removed the nail from Dante’s brain two hours later.

A panda walked into a restaurant and sat down at a table. He told the astonished waiter that he wanted a ham sandwich on rye and a glass of beer. The panda gobbled up his sandwich in a matter of minutes and swal-lowed his glass of beer in a single gulp. The waiter, who had been watch-ing the strange customer during the entire meal, slowly walked up to the panda and slid his check over to him. After looking at the check, the panda pulled out a pistol and shot the waiter. As the panda started toward the door, the irate bartender

exclaimed, “Hey, where are you going? You just killed the waiter, and you didn’t pay for your meal.” The panda looked over his shoulder at the bartender and said, “I’m a panda.
