Greek Art: Humanism
“A Sound Mind in a Sound Body”
Assignment• An overarching reality in Ancient Greek Art History is that
it was a period of chronic war• It is amazing that art was even made during this chaos• Why do you think art was created during such tumultuous
times?– Consider both visual arts as well as the epic poems and
tragedy/comedy dramas– What about Pericles and the Acropolis?– What messages did some of the artwork send to viewers (what
subjects were portrayed and why?)• Overall, what purposes did art serve in this era?
Assignment
• A goal within Greek life was to achieve balance of intellectual and physical discipline:– Humanistic education = “a sound mind in a sound
body”• What does this phrase mean for you? – What do you consider to be a sound mind in a
sound body?– What do you do in your life to achieve a sound
mind? A sound body? What makes you happy?
Assignment
• Once you’ve identified what helps you achieve a “sound mind in a sound body,” illustrate it– Show the viewer how these things impact your life– You are not limited to 1 single thing; in fact, you should
include a variety of things that contribute to your personal well-being in true Greek Humanistic tradition (they valued both intellectual AND physical health and had many practices that helped them achieve this)
– You can also include imagery about your dreams/goals/aspirations for the future
Assignment
• The point of this project is to use art as a vehicle to identify and appreciate the things in your life that make you happy and healthy– In essence, art will be serving a purpose of expressing
gratitude for the good things you have in your life (and yes, there are good things in EVERY life…sometimes you just have to look a little harder to see them)
– Sometimes art isn’t meant to be appreciated by the viewer; sometimes art serves a purpose for the artist more than it does for the people that look at the art
