Please remember St. Thomas More Church when writing or changing your Will.

Gospel Summary (Mark 1:21–28) On the last two Sundays we heard Jesus calling his first disciples. Over the next three

Sundays, we will hear stories of Jesus healing the sick and afflicted. He is just beginning his public ministry but as he drives out demons and heals lepers, his renown and his popularity increase quickly. In today’s Gospel, Jesus drives out an unclean spirit. The

people are astonished, not just at his actions, but also how he taught with such authority

Words from Our Pastor... Excerpt from Fr. Marvin’s homily last week

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time (B)

When the Lord started His ministry, He called a core group: Peter and Andrew, James and John, and others to become henceforth "fishers of men" (Mk 1:17). FOR LAITY, TOO. Unfortunately, many have the wrong notion that the call of Christ to be "fishers of men" is addressed only to the apostles and their successors: Bishops and priests. That's not true. Gone are the days when the laity simply say "Amen" or obey, pray, and PAY. The Decree on the Laity of Vatican II states: "Incorporated into Christ's Mystical Body through baptism and strengthened by the power of the Holy Spirit through confirma-tion, the laity are assigned to the apostolate by the Lord himself" (3). Today we know of more and more numerous lay Catholics who sacrifice time, treasure, and talent for the church. Think of the extraordinary ministers of holy communion, lec-tors, ushers, choir members, and yes, the various parish organizations like the KOC, vol-unteers who render their services gratis et amore. Consider, too, the numerous lay Cath-olic renewal movements such as Marriage Encounter, Couples for Christ, etc. The most basic and effective form of being a "fisher" is through the TESTIMONY of Christian living. If people recognize a special "something," like genuine charity and joy-ful service, they might eventually be attracted to the Christian faith. ASK YOURSELF: Would lukewarm and non-Catholics be edified by your way of life so that they, too, would want to become (better) Catholics? As a baptized Christian, you share in the apostolate of Christ as "fisher of men."

Friday, February 2 First Friday; 7pm Adoration

8pm Healing Mass, followed by Exposition & Silent Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament until 12am

Saturday, February 3 First Saturday; 10am Burmese Mass

Sunday, February 4 First Sunday; 5:30pm Tagalog Mass

Liturgy & Illness- Please be aware that the obligation to attend Sunday Mass does not apply to those who are ill,

especially those who suffer from contagious disease. It is a sign of consideration for others that those with flu-like symptoms remain at home. For the convenience of those who are homebound, or unable to attend Mass because of illness or infirmity, Mass is broadcast each Sunday morning at 6:00 AM on Channels 8, 20 (Comcast), KTSF 26.

As always, you are reminded to use common good sense in the reception of Holy Communion during the annual cold and flu season. If you are feeling ill or think you may have been exposed to a virus, you should refrain from partaking of the Blood of Christ from the communal chalice. In the same way, you should refrain from offering your hand to others at the sign of peace.

Likewise if you are not comfortable sharing the sign of peace or receiving Holy Communion from the communal chalice for fear of infection, you should feel no pressure to do so.

Thank You to our 2017 Bulletin Donors & Benefactors!

Dear Parishioners & Friends of STM Church, As you know that we have been using projector slides as our Liturgy Guide. We received a lot of positive feedback from people and we noticed better participation among the congregation! Together with that we are still printing our own bulletin. We will continue with our “Hi-Tech” Liturgy Guide and printing our own bulletin, but we are asking for your assistance in defraying the costs like licensing, printing, ink, improvements, etc... Each time we use the Liturgy Guide for prayer/song our donors and loved ones will be in or thoughts and will share in our participation at Mass. This Practice is not unusual in many churches of the Archdiocese. From time to time, Masses will be offered for these donors and benefactors. Many people like to honor deceased love ones with these donations. One may also honor a family or an individual. With a $100 donation, we will place one name or family on the on the back of the bulletin. We invite you to fill out the information slip below and mail or place in the collection basket with your check as soon as possi-ble. Please indicate if the person you are honoring is deceased or living, and make your check payable to St. Thomas More Church. Thank you for your generosity to our parish . Sincerely,

Fr. Marvin-Paul R. Felipe Pastor
