Our beautiful banners were created to celebrate Westminster’s 125th anniversary. The words represent our focus and vision of who we are and who we more fully strive to become individually and as a family of faith. The flowers in the sanctuary today are given to the glory of God in loving memory of Dick and Bob Geuder, Emily and Hanson Hodge from Sara Geuder.

The rosebud at the side of the pulpit this morning is in celebration of the birth of Addison Elle Inkell, born January 12, 2011, daughter of Joshua and Deanne Jonak Inkell. We welcome this child into the Westminster family.

Sanctuary Flowers - Consider giving the flowers for Sunday worship to remember or honor loved ones, or to celebrate an event, while expressing praise and thanksgiving to God. Please contact Linda Watson during business hours at 302-571-6719 or [email protected]. Dates available for flowers are February 13, 20 and 27.

Worship Resources – You may obtain large print hymnals and hearing devices from any usher. Worship bags for children ages 3-6 are available from the ushers. We are providing children’s bulletins for ages 7-12 through January. Kids’ Notes will resume in February.

Please remember in your prayers:

Those recently hospitalized: Inez Cobb, Thomas Ford, Bill Galloway, Deanne and Addison Inkell, Margie Snave.

Westminster’s homebound family who can no longer attend worship with us. Send a card, say a prayer, visit! This week we ask you to remember Elva Carty, Cokesbury Village - AL, 726 Loveville Road, Hockessin, DE 19707.

Anyone may submit a prayer request by leaving a confidential message on 302-654-5848, ext. 335, or filling out a prayer request card (in the pew pocket) and placing it in the offering plate.

Iraq and Afghanistan often seem far away, and we may neglect to realize that Americans, as well as Iraqis, Afghans and members of coalition forces, continue to die. As Christians, we are called to pray for the spreading of peace and justice and an end to violence. If someone in your family is serving in the military, please let us know, so that we may include that person on our prayer list. Contact Colleen Falasco: 302-654-5214 ext. 131, or [email protected]. This week we pray for

ORDER OF WORSHIP AT 9:00 A.M.

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

Ever present God, stir in my heart a holy expectancy so that I will be ready and open to hear your voice. May my spirit be open to the calling of your Spirit, that in listening for you I might hear you, that in searching for you I might meet you, that in meeting you I might follow you. Amen.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS *PASSING OF THE PEACE ORGAN PRELUDE Méditation Louis Vierne CALL TO WORSHIP

Lift your hearts, lift your eyes and lift your voices!

The living, moving Spirit of God has called us together. We are called together to hear the wisdom of God and to celebrate the love of God.

We will heed God’s Spirit and faithfully follow Christ. *HYMN NO. 446 “Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken” AUSTRIAN HYMN CALL TO CONFESSION

God calls us to follow the way of Christ, yet we often pursue other paths. Let us confess our need to redirect our lives.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Forgive us, Lord, for being hesitant to follow your ways. We have been reluctant to go the second mile. We have been skeptical about returning good for evil. We have been tentative in letting love rule in our relationships. We have been unwilling to surrender ourselves to your will. Forgive us for failing to follow your guidance. Fill us with strength and energy from your loving Spirit so that we may experience the joy and adventure of a life devoted to you. In the name of Christ, we pray. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF GOD’S FORGIVENESS

God liberates those who turn to the way of Christ. We are set free to walk the path that leads to abundant life.

At the asterisk (*), please stand as you are able.

TIME WITH OUR CHILDREN Susan Moseley ANTHEM Antiphon, from Five Mystical Songs Ralph Vaughan Williams

Westminster Choir Brian Carter, baritone

Let all the world in every corner sing, My God and King! The heavens are not too high, His praise may thither fly; The earth is not too low, His praises there may grow, The Church with psalms must shout, No door can keep them out; But above all, the heart Must bear the longest part. Text by George Herbert

SCRIPTURE LESSON Matthew 4:12-23 New Testament, page 3 Jen Barrington, Lay Liturgist

SERMON “Autonomy, Heteronomy or Theonomy?” Greg Jones *HYMN NO. 339 “Be Thou My Vision” SLANE

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

In forming his people and sending them into the world

Jesus called individuals to be disciples. They were to share the joy of his companionship, to understand and obey his teachings, and to follow him in life and death. We confess that Christians today are called to discipleship. Life shared with Christ and shaped by Christ is God’s undeserved gift to each of us. It is also God’s demand upon each of us, never perfectly fulfilled by any of us. Forgiven by God and supported by fellow believers, we strive to become more faithful and effective in living the Christian life. A Declaration of Faith

OFFERING

During the offering, please sign your name and pass the red folder down your row.

As folders are returned to the center aisle, note the names of fellow worshippers on your pew.

OFFERTORY ANTHEM “Follow Me” Roger C. Wilson

I heard him call, “Come, follow,” that was all. My gold grew dim, My soul went after him, I rose and followed, that was all. Who would not follow if they heard him call? Him evermore I behold, Walking in Galilee, Through the cornfields’ waving gold, In hamlet, or grassy wold, By the shores of the beautiful sea. He toucheth the sightless eyes, Before him the demons flee; To the dead he saith, “Arise!” To the living, “Follow me!” Text by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn No. 591)

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Christ, all people here below; Praise Holy Spirit evermore; Praise Triune God, whom we adore. Amen

Adult Education Classes This Morning Membership Exploration Class Today, in Classroom 5

Greg Jones and Anne Ledbetter will host a Membership Exploration class for anyone interested in learning more about Westminster. We will meet in Classroom 5 (across from Community Hall). Grab a cup of coffee and join us! Religion and Justice: Is There God Without Justice? Is There Justice Without God? Led by Dave McBride, in Classroom 6

Today – Economics and Justice: Police, Property and Poverty What are or should be the roles of justice, courage, and love in economic affairs? What are the roles of liberty, economic freedom and prosperity in the creation and definition of justice? The discussion will include scenes from the movie The Grapes of Wrath (1941 winner of two Academy Awards and nominated for 8 Academy Awards including Best Picture) based upon John Steinbeck’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the same name about the Joad family that is forced to migrate from their farm in Oklahoma to work as migrant laborers in California. Is the character Jim Casey—a former preacher who has lost his faith but finds meaning in a struggle for economic justice—a metaphor for Jesus Christ? God Heard Their Cry Led by class members, January 23, February 13, 20, in the Daughtry House

Today - Finger of God: The Plagues - Ramesseum Filmed on location, God Heard Their Cry is a five-session video series that brings God's Word to life with astounding relevance. By weaving together the Bible's fascinating historical, cultural, religious, and geographical contexts, teacher and historian Ray Vander Laan reveals keen insights into the Scriptures' significance for modern believers. In this series, Ray follows the story of the enslavement of the Israelites by Egypt and their being led out of Egypt by Moses. Filming is done on location in Luxor, Egypt, Deir al Median, Ramesseum and at the Red Sea. Marriage Enrichment: Making Love Last a Lifetime Led by class members, January 23, February 13, 20, 27, March 6, 20, 27, in the Meeting Room

Today – What Women Wish Men Knew about Women In these eight video presentations, Adam Hamilton offers some keys to developing a healthy, satisfying and successful marriage. If you are single, these videos can equip and prepare you to have a successful relationship. If you are married, they can help you grow in your relationship with your partner so that you can experience all that God intends a marriage to be. Westminster By Heart – Biblical Storytelling Led by Mary-beth Howard and Shelley Gnade, in the Ruth Christie Room

Westminster By Heart provides a unique opportunity to study scripture, foster a deeper personal connection to the stories of the Bible, and develop skills for telling Scripture on a regular basis in worship. Even if you are not sure that you want to tell in worship, you are welcome to join! Learning to tell a story is one of the best ways to connect deeply to the Bible.
