BISHOP WOODIE w. WHITE A native of New York City, Woodie White earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Paine College in Augusta, Georgia and a Master of Divinity degree at Boston University, School of Theology. He served as pastor at St. Andrews Methodist Church in Worchester, Massachusetts before he became a probationary member of the Detroit Annual Conference. He was appointed as Associate Pastor and later, pastor, at East Grand Boulevard Methodist Church in Detroit. Subsequently, he began two years as Urban Missioner for the conference's work in Metropolitan Detroit. With the establishment of a General Commission on Religion and Race by The United Methodist Church in 1968, Woodie W. White became its first General Secretary, serving in that capacity until he was elected Bishop in 1984. He was appointed Resident Bishop of the Illinois Area from 1984 -1992, and he was assigned to the Indiana Area in 1992. At the same time, he served as president of the General Board of Discipleship from 1988-1992 and president of the UM Council of Bishops in (1996-1997) before retiring in 2004. Currently, he is serving as Bishop-in-Residence at Candler School of Theology, Emory University. Bishop White holds honorary doctoral degrees from Adrian College, Rust College, McKendree College, Illinois Wesleyan University, MacMurray College, Evansville University, University of Indianapolis and Martin University. He holds numerous other honors, including a Distinguished Alumni Award from Boston University, an Urban Award from the U.S. Government Office of Economic Opportunity, and the Distinguished Service Award from the United Committee on Negro History. He was on a four-person task force to examine racism and race relations in Australia and New Zealand for the Committee to Combat Racism of the World Council of Churches. He participated in preaching missions in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Germany, and Zimbabwe in 1994 and he led the largest pilgrimage (900+) of Hoosiers to the Holy Land. He has written extensively for denominational and ecumenical periodicals: Racial Transition in the Church (co-author), Confessions of a Prairie Pilgrim, Conversations of the Heart, and Our Time Under God Is Now: Reflections on Black Methodists for Church Renewal. An active leader in the civil rights struggle, Bishop White was elected to the Martin Luther King, Jr. International Board of Preachers at Morehouse College and he continues to teach and work for racial justice. Since 1985, he has written an annual "birthday letter" to Dr. King about the state of race relations and racial justice in America. His 2015 reflection spans events from Selma to Ferguson.
