We are looking for someone who feels called to minister to students and is eager to make a difference in their lives. We have a strong core group of students and volunteers and we need a leader who will step in and help all of them reach their potential for Christ. Admittedly, I am a little biased. But I believe that this is a tremendous ministry opportunity. It is a healthy ministry situation—not a volatile one. Our church is the result of two congregations merging in 2008. They overcame obstacles and differences and lived out the principles of reconciliation and unity. After doing the hard work of merging, this is not a church that will divide over the color of carpet, the placement of the communion table or the student minister’s new haircut. This is a congregation that I believe lives out the principles of “In essentials: Unity, In non-essentials: Liberty, In all things: Love.” We are a conservative Christian Church, but some would probably think that we are on the liberal end of conservatism. I would say that we are pretty conservative in our Biblical interpretation and pretty liberal with our grace. Our ideal candidate We would prefer someone who has been in student ministry for a few years already and has learned the nuts and bolts of how to run an effective student ministry program. We would like someone who enjoys and wants to specialize in student ministry for awhile. We will consider both male and female candidates. Ideally, we would appreciate the opportunity of having a student minister who is married—not because of “marriage bias,” but because our last two student ministers happened to both be single. Having a solid marriage relationship would bring a different dynamic (and a welcome stability) to the position. We are looking for someone who is confident to make plans and train leaders, gifted at teaching students, and ambitious about doing kingdom work. We have a student ministry program that is ready to be taken to the next level. We need a dynamic leader who has the desire and skill set to get there. This packet has valuable information about the church and about our community. Lakeland is a great city to live in. I hope you enjoy learning about Legacy and Lakeland. Dear Student Minister Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in the student minister position at Legacy Christian Church.

Our ideal candidate We would prefer someone who has been in student ministry for a few years already and has learned

the nuts and bolts of how to run an effective student ministry program.

Please contact me with any questions you may have. My email is [email protected] , my cell is 765-720-9797.

Legacy Christian Church - website: www.legacychristian.com -In Lakeland, Florida (city of about 100,000, but it also has surrounding population, too. There are 600,000 in the county, 92,000 students in the school district).-Halfway between Tampa and Orlando (45min to each).-We average 400 in attendance on Sunday mornings.-Merger of two Christian Churches about 8 1/2 years ago.-Truly multi-generational church-Healthy leadership relationships between staff and elders-Other staff members include senior minister (myself), worship minister, children’s minister and admin assistant. We are a fairly young staff, and we’ve all been here for 3-4 years. We also have a volunteer pastoral care/seniors minister who is a little older and been here a little longer.

Why is the Position Open?-Our most recent student minister served here for only one year and decided to go back to school to prepare for the foreign mission field. He is leaving on good terms. Our previous student minister had served here for 5 years on staff, was a 26 y.o. single woman and moved back home to Michigan to serve at a Christian youth camp where she grew up. She left on good terms, as well.

Snapshot of the Student Ministry-Our student ministry is strong with several great adult volunteers.-We have multiple young adults and other adults who help with the program. Southeastern University is a Christian university in town and we have been able to recruit some great volunteers from SEU through our college ministry. -Sunday morning classes: middle school and high school-Wednesday nights: main program night, large group combined middle/high school, then split off for small groups.-Church camp (Lake Aurora Christian Camp), and CIY conferences are on our summer schedule.

Our Neighborhood-Our neighborhood is pretty diverse. Within 6 blocks of our church we have:

-apartments-lots of rental properties-middle class housing-two 55+ retirement communities-expensive historic district with $350,000+ homes-diverse racial makeup (especially African American, Hispanic and white)-preschool that serves a lot of low-income families-Starbucks

-Our church is not very diverse. It is beginning to change, but still a lot more work to do.-We are trying to do a better job of reaching out to our immediate community.

The Position: Student Minister-Responsible for 6th-12th grade, -Potentially help with college ministry, as well. Active in wider life of church, too. (our staff collaborates a lot).-Full-time position, with health insurance included for employee and family (if needed), and money for conferences/education.-Salary package is in line with public school teachers. It won’t be a place to get rich quick, but starting salary would not be less than $40k.-We are open to all candidates. But with our vision for the future in reaching our neighborhood, we are praying for someone who is comfortable and gifted in reaching out and someone to whom students in our community would feel comfortable approaching.-Bilingual would be a great bonus, too, but not a requirement.
