DNC (VPF) versus Raster

• Raster– Looks like a paper chart– No feature selectivity

• Vector– Can display like a paper chart– “Smart data” - contains attributes– Thematic data– Selectivity in feature display

VPF allows for usage across multiple NGA products..i.e. from the sea to the land and inland (all on VPF)


DNC (VPF)

• DNCs are a vector database of nautical features consisting of points, lines, and polygons. These features have been collected individually and attributed so as to support use by Geographic Information Systems and other scientific applications.

• The DNC® data is formatted for direct manipulation by military systems to provide important data and systems interoperability. When interfaced with appropriate navigation systems, DNC® will ultimately replace the paper chart for safe navigation by ships of the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard.

• DNCs meets the functionality and data content requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) Performance Standards for ECDIS.

• Database is comprised of 4,820 charts grouped into 5 library types based on scale:

Electronic Chart Display Information Systems-Navy (ECDIS-N)

• Status of ECDIS-N Certification Process– Paperless Navigation may be authorized by

U.S. Navy Type Commanders (TYCOM) once:

1. Systems are certified by Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEASYSCOM)

2. Systems are approved by Deputy CNO for Warfare Requirements and Programs (N7)

3. Navigation teams are trained and proficient

4. DNCs are certified safe for navigation by NGA


DNC Library Update-VDU• Vector Data Update - Digital update capability for NGA VPF

datasets– Provides the capability to deliver updated datasets to the

customer in the field using the least amount of bandwidth and download time

• US Navy Ships are often underway and do not receive DNC CDs in a timely manner

• US Navy Ships have limited download capability, so providing small update patches allows ships faster updating to DNC. Update patches are Kb(s) in size vs. new library is Mb(s) in size.

– Automated update procedure• Update files (patch files) will be distributed electronically and via

CD-ROM• Technology can be inserted into other NGA programs (vector,

• Tactical Ocean Data (TOD) is a validated U. S. Navy requirement to replace bathymetric and exercise paper charts used primarily by Navy Submarines. This requirement supports the Navy ECDIS (ECDIS-N) policy– TOD Level 0: OPAREA charts, Uses DNC as a base– TOD Level 1: Bottom Contour Charts (BC)– TOD Level 2: Bathymetric Navigation Planning
