    SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

    1. Aisles are to be kept clear for hasty exits.

    2. Identify and point out primary and alternate fire exits.

    3. Observe all routine safety procedures.

    4. Observe all applicable environmental considerations.5. In the event of a fire, you will exit the classroom from the nearest exit.

    6. You will proceed to the parking lot outside and hold a formation.

    7. The class president or their representative will take attendance and

    report to the instructor.

    ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS

    In the event of spill, clean it up immediately.

    The spill will be reported to the firstinstructor seen. The spill will be cleaned inaccordance with the division spill contingencyplan. This plan is located in the MIF and PTF

    offices as well as the BPLD operations office.The instructor will make the necessarynotification to all appropriate persons. Therules and regulations governing the spell of apetroleum product will be followed at all times.

    For additional information on spill clean uprefer to TC 5-400, or AR 200-1.

    SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

    Ensure that the pump is grounded andbonded

    No smoking within 50 feet signs areposted

    Fire extinguishers are located within 5 to10 feet Pump should not be operated during an

    electrical storm Ear protection is required while operating

    any pump.

    THEORY OF PUMP OPERATION

    The Theory of Pump Operations beginswith fuel entering the pump assemblyhoses, which are coupled to the SuctionPort. Next the fuel enters the pump

    housing (Impeller), where it is pumpedinto the Air Eliminator.The Air Eliminator Assembly removes

    air and maintains an Air-Free System

    Throughout the operation. The fuelthen flows through the Discharge Portto the Discharge Hose.

    TYPES OF PUMP STATIONS

    There are three types of pump stations:Booster, Mainline (pipeline) and Flood andTransfer (feeder).

    BOOSTER PUMP STATIONS:

    PIPELINE PUMP STATIONS:

    FLOOD PUMP STATIONS:

    Are sometimes used to push fuel unloaded from a tankeror barge through the line to the Base Terminal storage.

    Are used on the mainline to keep the fuelmoving at the desired flow rate

    Are used to supply positive suction pressure

    for Pipeline Pump Stations

    ARRANGEMENT OF CENTRIFUGAL

    PUMP UNITS

    The Pumps on Centrifugal Pump Units canbe connected In SERIES. Fuel flowsfirst into one pump andthen into thenext one. Pressure builds up as the fuelis pumped from one pump to the next.The fuel is finally pumped out at apressured that is a combined total of the

    pumping pressures of all the pumps.

    ARRANGEMENT OF CENTRIFUGAL

    PUMP UNITS

    The pumps on centrifugal pump units can beconnected In Parallel. Each pumpreceivesfuel Directly from the line at theSame

    Time. All the FUEL is pumped out at theSame Pressure. If two pumps are inparallel, Twice the Volume of product isbeing pumped compared to using only one

    pump.

    PUTTING PUMPS ON LINE

    Use the following steps when puttingpumps on line:

    1. Perform before operation PMCS.

    2. Start the pump IAW proper TM.

    3. Open suction valve on pump.

    4. Open vent valve until fuel flows steadilyfrom opening then close vent valve

    5. Warm up pump engines with discharge

    valves closed.

    6. Open discharge valve when the desiredsuction pressure is reached and increase

    the pump speed to desired rpm.

    7. Perform during operations PMCS.

    TAKING PUMPS OFF LINE

    1. Reduce pump pressure to idle speed for the

    required time.

    2. Close discharge valve .

    3. Close suction valve.

    4. Turn pumps off.

    5. Perform after operations PMCS.
