This document provides a description of Alcatel-Lucent 9363 Metro Cell Indoor V2 1900/850 MHz W-CDMA (Metro Cell Indoor in the rest of the document) as part of the 9360 Small Cell solution. The Product Description provides the characteristics of the Metro Cell Indoor access point, key benefits and operational capabilities. The Metro Cell Indoor will be introduced first with releases BCR 2.4.1 and BCR 3.0.

Alcatel-Lucent reserves the right to change the technical specifications without notice until General Availability of the product.

1.2 Scope of this Document

2 METRO CELL INDOOR

2.1 Metro Cell Overview

A Metro Cell is a public wireless access node using licensed spectrum with substantially lower coverage and serving a smaller number of users than macrocells. The Metro Cell will most of the time be owned and deployed by mobile operators to provide a transparent capacity layer as a complement to the macrocell “umbrella” coverage layer.

Small Cell Access Points, 9366 Small Cell Gateway and Small Cell Management System are included in the 9360 Small Cell solution to allow a highly scalable interconnection to the existing UMTS network over the existing standardized 3GPP interfaces. The Metro Cell offers legacy support for Circuit Switched Voice and UMTS Packet Data with standard 3G handsets.

2.2 Small Cell Solution architecture

The high level system architecture for small cells as defined by 3GPP is depicted in the diagram in Figure 1.

Figure 1: 9360 Small Cell solution high level system architecture

The Small Cell solution uses 3GPP interfaces to connect to the existing mobile core network nodes while offering 3GPP compliant air interface. The backhaul connection from the Access Point is IP and an IPsec Tunnel is used to guarantee a secure link. Furthermore, an Iu’ interface is supported between the Access Point and the 9366 Small Cells Gateway (which includes the 9365 BSR Gateway) from BCR 3.0.

The architecture integrates seamlessly into the operator's existing 3GPP network, including the 3G MSC, SGSN and therefore existing Applications, Portals, Services through standard Iu-CS and Iu-PS interfaces. For more information on the Architecture of the solution please refer to [7].

2.3 Benefits

Additional to coverage, one of the key added values of the Metro Cell is to offload the macro network. As part of the Small Cell solution, some offloading techniques are available, like internet traffic breakout at the Small Cell unit or at the gateway.

The Metro Cells can be deployed in areas formally covered by microcells or picocells, but can also be used in many more cases, instead of macrocells, since they are very easy to install and are less subject to regulatory constraints with their very low emission power. As a result, 10 to 100 Metro Cells may be deployed in place of one macrocell. Metro Cells are ideal for high user density places where additional capacity is required or even in areas where cell phone coverage is needed on short notice.

Metro Cells are more than extending coverage and capacity. It also enables the creation of new and innovative applications. With Alcatel-Lucent 9363 Metro Cell Indoor, the mobile service provider can leverage unique network capabilities, such as location, Quality of Service (QoS) and trusted security for application development.

2.4 Alcatel-Lucent 9363 Metro Cell Indoor

With a fully compliant 3GPP implementation, the Metro Cell Indoor allows the end user to use the wide range of available 3G devices, applications with higher data rates and, depending on the operator strategy, at lower call costs.

The Metro Cell uses a flat IP architecture, collapsing the traditional 3G Node B and RNC functions into one. From BCR 3.0, it supports up to 32 users. Traffic is backhauled through the standard IP network.

The Metro Cell Indoor supports 250mW (24dBm) transmit power for an extended coverage area.

It uses the same end-to-end Small Cell solution as the 9361 Home Cell, 9362 Enterprise Cell and the 9364 Metro Cell Outdoor. Alcatel-Lucent Small Cell solution is flexible in meeting the mobile service provider’s need; it can be deployed to support one or combination of small cells from Alcatel-Lucent Small Cells portfolio.

Table 4: Frequency bands

3G Network Listening

The 3G Network Listening feature allows the Metro Cell Indoor to act as a UE and receive transmission from neighboring base stations. The feature also allows the Metro Cell Indoor to automatically identify, measure and record its neighbor UMTS cells, eliminating the need for operator provisioned neighbor cell lists. This information is used by the Metro Cell Indoor to automatically select its primary scrambling code and power levels to transmit and to create and update a list of UMTS neighbor cells. This neighbor cell list is used by the Metro Cell Indoor, when in base station mode, for identification of the target cell for UMTS handover and for rebroadcasting of the system information messages, in support of reselection by the UE.

2G Network Listening

The Metro Cell Indoor supports a GSM receiver chain and can therefore receive the signal transmitted by the 2G Macro network. The Metro Cell Indoor can search for and sync to a macro base station, and then decode the BCCH channel. It can then retrieve the relevant information to build and maintain 2G neighbor lists and target cells for IRAT handover and later, when in base station mode, to broadcast to the UE for cell reselection. Measurements and information are provided by the network listening feature to the auto-configuration and self-optimization functions.

3.1.6 Antenna

The Metro Cell Indoor has antennas with N-type Male connector. The pairs of antennas provide Tx/Rx and listening and enable Rx diversity capability on the Metro Cell Indoor.

Figure 7: Antenna of the Metro Cell Indoor

3.1.7 Transmission Power

The Metro Cell Indoor transmission power measured at the antenna port is:

Maximum: 250mW (24dBm)

Step 1dB, Step accuracy 0.5dB

Control range: 42dB

The Access Point output power is controlled to optimise the coverage while avoiding the interference.

3.1.8 Radio Parameters

The Metro Cell Indoor is designed according to the following parameters in 3GPP TS 25.104 specifications.

Parameter Typical Value 3GPP Value

Sensitivity - 112 dBm - 107 dBm (or less)

QPSK EVM 6% 17.5% (or less)

QAM EVM 6% 12.5% (or less)

ACLR 5MHz 45 dB 45 dB (or greater)

ACLR 10MHz 56 dB 50 dB (or greater)

Table 5: Radio parameters

3.1.9 Reliability

The MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) is calculated based on Telcordia SR-332 Issue 2, September 2006.

The MTBF of the Metro Cell Indoor (excluding the power supply) at 25°C is 585K hours.

The MTBF of the DC 48V power supply alone is 550K hours.

3.1.10 Security

A secure memory is used to authenticate and store sensitive data in the Access Point (shared secret for authentication). From BCR 3.0, the Metro Cell Indoor can also support digital certificate instead of this mechanism. However, once the authentication method is configured in the product (either shared secret or digital certificate) then there is no way to change it anymore.

The product uses security screw to prevent from vandalism and can be fitted optionally with an anti tamper alarm

Power switch off lead to the deactivation of the Metro Cell Indoor unit and reactivation require an action at the SCMS.

3.1.11 Status Indicators

Five LEDs and a reset button are hidden behind a removable cover for debugging purposes. The LEDs provide status for Power, backhaul connectivity, 2nd Ethernet port status, GPS status and 3G cell status.

Additional LEDs for Ethernet connectivity status are available at Ethernet Port.

3.1.12 Environmental and Regulatory Specifications
