It has been a busy summer

and the Department has seen

some improvements in our

facilities/parks. A few of the

highlights are:

1. French Fort Cove had

the new washrooms open in

July along with the longest

Zip Line in Atlantic Canada.

Further work will continue

this fall with a new dock

going in for the boat rentals,

work on the bridge, and

some trails to be cut for the

biking event for the up and

coming 2018 Jeux de

L'Acadie and the playground

will get upgrades next Spring.

2. Queen Elizabeth Park

has had extensive

renovations with new turf,

amenities including benches,

picnic tables, games tables,

garbage cans and recycling

cans, work done on the

fountain, gazebo, lights,

electrical and will have a new

entrance trellis installed this

Fall as well as other finishing

touches.

3. With the assistance of the

Rotary Club of Chatham,

the new accessible

playground officially opened

at Ritchie Wharf on August

31st. The Rotary Club of

Chatham contributed

$100,000 to this wonderful

project and the City

contributed $35,000 to finish

up the project. The shops at

the park were painted in June

and new windows and doors

will continue to be installed in

these shops into the fall.

4. Playgrounds throughout

the city had new borders

installed and Benson Park will

get a new playground

structure installed this fall.

5. LeBreton Drive Park

will have a new outdoor

basketball court installed this

fall.

6. Other repairs on

facilities included roofing at

MVHS Pool, Golden Hawk

gymnastics room and storage

area as well as the Chatham

Outdoor Pool maintenance

building.

7. Middle Island had the

windows replaced at the

restaurant in May and work

on the installation at the

office is being completed

early September.

8. Loggieville has the ball

field clubhouse coming

down as well as the old

bleachers being cleared away

making the park safer for

those wanting to use the

space.

9. Kethro Lookout has had

the trail to the river lookout

repaired including new

supports and understructure

of the platform, new stairs

and railing. This allows this

trail to re-open.

10. The Engineering Dept is

having the shoreline

protection completed on

Water Street and this will

be another trail that has been

closed that will see some

3

upcoming work to get it open

again for the public.

11. The Miramichi Civic

Center will have a new score

clock installed in late

September.

12. Unfortunately the docks

at Ritchie Wharf were not

completed for this summer

season but the tender is out

and they should be ready for

next Spring.

There has been many other

items taken care over the

summer as well and we know

there is much more to do to

meet everyone's expectations

and desires. The Department

will continue to work towards

making the facilities safe and

enjoyable for all to use and

thank the public for their

patience while we make the

improvements.

Our staff and the volunteer

sports groups have worked

hard to put together the

information on the programs

available in our community.

This brochure provides you

the details to help you set out

your recreation preferences.

“I would like to take this

opportunity to thank the

many volunteers that allow

for the many programs to be

available in our community

and provide us with the

details so that we can pass

the information along to you.

Their valuable knowledge,

skills and time needs to be

acknowledged with a huge

THANK YOU!”

The Department staff is

working with the new

healthy eating direction

given to them and

implementing it into the

programs and special events.

So you may notice some

changes that began

happening round the Easter

event last Spring. This works

well with the partnership with

the Be Alive

Northumberland, Public

Health and Mango

partnerships as they

introduce the 5210

program. Included in our

brochure is an outline of this

program and website where

you can find more

information on implementing

it with your family to assist in

keeping everyone healthy.

Our cancellation line for

storm closures will be used

once again this season (623-

2333). Please check the line

if you are unsure if a

program will be running

during inclement weather.

The staff will be making a

decision based on the

weather information provided

by Environment Canada and

putting cancellation on the

line ASAP as well as using our

Facebook page and the local

radio stations.

We are always looking to

meet the needs of our

patrons and welcome your

comments and suggestions,

as they are invaluable. You

can contact our Department

in person at our office at 94

General Manson Way, by

phone at 623-2300 or email

us at

miramichirecreation@miramic

hi.org. Your comments and

concerns are logged,

investigated and used to help

us improve our services. You

will receive a response from a

member of the staff so long

as you leave your contact

information.

There is still time for you to

participate in the Canada 150

participaction play list

activities so check out the list

included on the back cover

for your information.

Thank you for taking time to

explore your options for your

60 minutes of physical

activity most days which will

have you realizing the health

benefits quickly!

Recreation...the

benefits are

endless!

it’s never too late to learn!

Online registration is now available at

app.bookking.ca/miramichirecreationpub for those using

credit cards. The swimming class lineup will be available

to view 2 weeks prior to all registrations. If you are

paying by cash/debit or check, walk-ins are welcome at

the Recreation Office located at 94 General Manson Way

on the following dates:

Tuesday, September 12 5:30-7:30 pm (Fall Classes)

Wednesday, January 3 5:30-7:30 pm (Winter Classes)

Tuesday, March 20 5:30-7:30 pm (Spring Classes)

Just a reminder that you need to complete a one-time family profile prior

to registering whether or not you are using our online service. This will

help speed up the registration process and ensure a shorter waiting time

for your convenience.

This year in April, the Lifesaving Society of NB published the latest “New Brunswick Public Pool

Safety Standards Guide” after extensive research on water safety, drowning prevention and

drowning stats in our Province. To ensure our Community Wellness & Recreation public pools

are safer for our patrons to use, we have adapted these new recommendations to our pools.

Here are the changes:

Please shower with soap and warm water before entering the pool

Children 6 and under must be accompanied by a parent or adult 16 years of age or older

who is responsible for their direct supervision.

Children 7-10 years old who are unable to complete the lap test must be accompanied

by a person 12 years of age or older who is responsible for their direct supervision.

Repetitive breath holding, prolonged underwater swimming is not permitted by general

pool users.

Snorkels and face masks are not permitted by general pool users.

Private Lessons:

Due to the high volume of private lesson request, we have implemented a system to better

serve our community and ensure everyone has equal opportunity to learn to swim. We take

those with special circumstances first that do better with one on one instruction who are unable

to attend group settings. After this, we take those who need extra help outside of their regular

scheduled instructional swim lessons if needed. Once we have accommodated the above lists,

we will offer lessons to those wishing to obtain levels through one on one instruction. Most

private lessons are done during public swim time.

Cost: $10 for 30 minutes (children under 6) $20/1 hour (children 6 years of age and over)

To book private lessons, email [email protected] or call 623-2314.

on the “Within arm’s reach” Principle. Focus is on close Playful interaction and shared fun

between child, parent & Water

Preschool Ages 3-5

Preschool 1 These preschoolers will have fun learning to get in and out of the water. We’ll help them

jump into chest deep water. They’ll float and glide on their front and back and learn to

get their faces wet and blow bubbles underwater

Preschool 2 These preschoolers learn to jump into chest-deep water by themselves, and get in and

out wearing a lifejacket. They’ll submerge and exhale underwater. Wearing lifejacket

they’ll glide on their front and back.

Preschool 3 These youngsters will try both jumping and a sideways entry into deep water while

wearing a lifejacket. They’ll recover objects from the bottom in waist-deep water. They’ll

work on kicking and gliding through the water on their front and back.

Preschool 4 Advanced preschoolers will learn to do solo jumps into deeper water and get out by

themselves. They’ll do sideways entries and open their eyes underwater. They’ll master a

short swim on their front wearing a lifejacket and gliding and kicking on their side.

Preschool 5 These youngsters get more adventuresome with a forward roll entry wearing a lifejacket

and treading water for 10 sec. They’ll work on front and back crawl swims 5m, interval

training and get a giggle out of whip kick.

Swimmer Age 6+. Levels Range on a continuum where previous level is expected to be fully

completed before going on to the next.

Beginner

Swimmer 1

Designed for children 6+ who have not gone through the preschool program. The

instructors take more time introducing the basics.

Swimmer 1 These beginners will become comfortable jumping into water with and without a

lifejacket. They’ll learn to open their eyes, exhale and hold their breath underwater. They’ll

work on floats, glides, and kicking through the water on their front and back.

falling sideways into the water wearing a lifejacket. They’ll be able to support themselves

at the surface without an aid, learn whip kick, front & back crawl and swim 10m on their

front and back and be introduced to flutter kick interval training (4 x 5 m).

Swimmer 3 These junior swimmers will dive and do in water front somersault and handstands. They’ll

work on 15m of front crawl, back crawl and 10m of whip kick. Flutter kick interval training

increases to 4 x 15m.

Swimmer 4 These intermediate swimmers will swim 5m underwater and lengths of front, back crawl,

whip kick, and breast stroke arms with breathing. Their new bag of tricks includes the

completion of the Canadian Swim to Survive Standard. They’ll cap it all off with front crawl

sprint over 25m and 4 x 25m front or back crawl interval training

Swimmer 5 These swimmers will master shallow dives, cannonball entries, eggbeater kicks, and in-

water backward somersaults. They’ll refine their front and back crawl over 50m swims of

each, and breaststroke over 25m. Then they’ll pick up the pace in 25m sprints and two

interval training bouts: 4 x 50m front or back crawl; and 4 x 15m breaststroke.

Swimmer 6 These advanced swimmers will rise to the challenge of sophisticated aquatic skills

including stride entries, compact jumps and lifesaving kicks like eggbeater and scissor

kick. They’ll develop strength and power in head-up breaststroke sprints over 25 m. They’ll

Come on Miramichi ...there’s still time to get in the game and try the Canada 150 physical activities in honor of Canada's Big Birthday!!

Register at https://www.participaction.com/en-

ca/programs/participaction-150

Here are a few reasons why (well... besides the prizes they are offering)

1. Physical activity helps people of all ages improve their overall health.

2. Regular physical activity reduces your risk of heart disease.

3. Children and teens that are physically active tend to perform better

academically.

4. Those who are physically active tend to feel happier.

5. Exercise boosts self-confidence.

Physical activity reduces the risk of premature death.

6. Exercise helps the body release mood-enhancing compounds.

7. By being active, you are role modeling healthy behavior for others. Did you

know that if you engage in physical activity there’s a much greater chance your

children will too?

8. Walking reduces the risk of many health conditions including: High Blood

Pressure, High Cholesterol, Type 2 Diabetes, Heart Disease, Osteoporosis, and

Breast and Colon Cancers.

9. Walking improves muscle tone in your lower body and uses up calories.

10. Exercise helps people to focus on things other than their worries. Even

a walk several times a week, for 20-30 minutes, can help in the treatment of

anxiety or depression

11. An active lifestyle can help you sleep better!

12. Low impact activities like walking or snowshoeing are good choices for people

with joint problems or those new to physical activity.

13. Exercise – and meet new friends!

14. Physical activity helps relieve stress.
