India has emerged as one of the fastest growing destinations in travel and tourism in the world. Tourism contributes approximately 6 per cent to India’s GDP and 10.2 per cent to employment. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), the travel and tourism sector in India will grow by 7.5 per cent in 2015, fuelled by visa reforms. During 2015, the industry’s GDP contribution is forecast to grow by 7.5 per cent and employment by 1.8 per cent. This demonstrates the sector’s enduring ability to generate economic growth and create jobs at a faster rate than the national economy, which is due to grow by 6.7 per cent in 2015.

The Government has set a goal to achieve a level of 11.24 million Foreign Tourist Arrivals and 1450 million Domestic Tourist Visits by the year 2016 -17. The UNWTO predicts that India will account for 50 million outbound tourists by 2020; the ‘Kuoni Travel Report India 2007’ predicts that total outbound spending will cross the US$ 28 billion mark in2020.
