  • President's NoteGreetings fellow rockers.

This is my last "president's notes".The past 4 years have been loaded with

happenings. We lost some great members who were

instrumental in starting this club and we miss them.We made a good transition for our annual shows

from Athens to Wysox. We are in Wysox for thenext 5 years.

We still need to build the membership with newmembers, especially with some that can help in thedifferent areas of club tasks. A lot of us are at thestage where health is slowing us down and someactivities are just too difficult.

It has been a pleasure working with the memberswe have in continuing the club operation. Many ofyou do a lot more than you should have to. The loveof doing is a powerful thing and it is a strong forcein keeping us keeping on.

To the next set of officers, of whom we still don'thave a full slate, I wish you the best and know that alot of great history is behind this club.

    —Thank you all.Bob

wonderful world-wide-web resource for thoseinterested in minerals — amateurs andprofessionals: mindat.org.

It is a gigantic, online, crowdsourced database ofrocks and minerals and where they come from.

It's strictly non-commercial and now it's trying toraise some money, via an online auction. Theauction runs from 10AM PDT June 1 to 6PM PDTJune 7. Note the Pacific Daylight Time — auctionsite is on the West Coast.

Check out the site; there are some nice pictures, even if you don't buy anything.

    The AskYou've been asked for

submissions to the Shin-Skinner in the past; some ofyou have been very generousin contributing content — textand pictures.

From now on, I intend tohave a specific place for requests. This is it.

Please send me images of interestingmineral specimen labels, in any format. "Interesting" to me means a label from afamous collection, a famous location, oreven a good layout. Please send examplesof what you think is interesting.

Editor's NoteWell, the season has come for more than just

attending rock club meetings. There are gem showsall over the place and the weather is mostly suitablefor field collecting.

I'm presently straightening out my stored (IEboxed) collection and as I uncover things I haven'tseen in a while, I wish I had kept a collecting diary.I have scattered records, but it would have beenbetter if centralized.

I urge anyone to keep track of your mineralcollecting activities, whether field trips, show visits,or club get-togethers. Where you went, what it waslike, and, most importantly, whom you met, aregood things to record. And, it can be something totie your specimen labels back to.

It goes without saying, that your "diary" shouldbe computerized in some way; you'll want perfectdigital storage for the long term.

  • Che-Hanna Junior RockhoundsThe Junior Rockhounds met on Sunday, May

20th at the Lockwood pavilion for their first outdoormeeting of the summer. We welcomed AustinYungwirth from Liberty, PA to our group. Hisgrandmother, Ruth Spencer, brought him to themeeting. We hope to see Austin and his family atmore of our activities. He knows a lot about rocksand minerals already and is eager to learn more andgo collecting with the club. We had a lot of visitorsto our meeting.

They came with the Henrich family and TracyGault to see what Junior Rockhounds was all about. After our meeting, that whole group went on tocelebrate a birthday at Chucksters.

The meeting activity was a treasure hunt. We hadPre-K kids, students from kindergarten through 5thgrade, and four 8th grade students. The group wasdivided into two teams, and each team created atreasure hunt for the other. There had to be 6different steps the kids had to follow. The two teamsexchanged their written directions. and they went onthe basket ball court to do what was written.

With that many kids, I changed from rewardsbeing out on the court to items on the 2 picnic tablesthat were home base for each team. Each child wenthome with three items they liked.

We tried to make a compass using items found inany first aid kit. We magnetized sewing needles, paper clips, safety pins and other objects containingiron or steel, placed them on a piece of cork (orsubstitutes: pieces of wood, a small leaf) and floatthe whole thing on water. The magnetized part ofthe needle will point to North. Some had problemsbecause there was lots of magnetite and supermagnets on the table. With those removed, theexperiment worked.

Now, when meeting at a public park, one neverknows what to expect. I arrived an hour early toperuse the area for broken glass, needles, and otherthings that could be dangerous and cleaned up thefoot prints and gravel from the tables. I was reallyupset to find the work Scout Troop 1 from theAthens United Methodist Church did — destroyed.

Not so long ago, those boys worked hard to planeand stain all of the boards of the picnic tables toremove nasty graffiti. There is lots of new graffitiwith letters carved deeply into the wood.

Duane and I are known to yell at kids and talkfirm and politely to adults when kids are abusing thepavilions while the adults with them are fishing orsitting in their cars, smoking and using their phonesand not paying the least bit of attention to thedestructive behavior of the younger generation. Most just shrug and say, "Kids will be kids and theyare having fun." I guess, if I just stay home on myhill, I will be a much happier person.

Therefore, besides the 2 summer picnics atSatterlee Creek Environmental Center, the othermeetings will be at my house. I will notify parentsof those dates via Facebook or a text. With thesummer weekends so busy for all the families, wemight have meetings on a weekday at 6 pm. We willdo precious metal clays again and make bismuthcrystals at one meeting. This requires heat andsafety equipment.

My Audubon group will be carving soapstone, soif you are interested in joining us for this, let meknow. Our kid's summer picnic will be at the FarmAnimal place in Chemung, perhaps in Augustbefore school starts. That worked out well severalyears ago. There is lots to do for the kids and theowner is very helpful.

The summer picnics at SCEC are on Sunday, July15 and August 19. There are always fun activitiesfor the whole family. Have a wonderful summer.
