GLITCHThis project
is an exploration into the value of found and
manufactured accidents in the architec-
tural design process. These accidents, or
Glitches, are resolved in an attempt to draw
beauty from the otherwise awkward and
overlooked.
There are 3 types of Glitches that are in-
vestigated. The rst Glitch is that ofInfra-
structure Appropriation, the second isVisual
Artifactand the third isWestern Light. Asan origin for design Glitch phenomenon
can shape an architectural process without
preconception.
Building program takes the form of a dedi-
cated sound installation space with outdoor
performance areas.

infrastructure appropriationThe Lee Avenue coulee runs ad-jacent to the project site. Aside from draining rainwater into the Vermillion river it also acts as a canvas
for local grafti artists. The coulee base is ten feet below grade and layered in colorful markings creatin
a surreal and intimate space. An architectural intervention in the coulees proximity has the potential to
acknowledge and celebrate this presence.

visual artifact Digital media is capable of true random images in the form of VisualArtifacts. The value of the Visual Artifact is in its lack of composition. Using this form of Glitch in the con
ceptual design process yields ideas and diagrams that have an origin free of preconception.

western light The western sky in south Louisiana is unique in its wide range of tonesafter sunset and in its unforgiving heat in the few hours before. Architecture in the region rarely has a
chance to engage sunset phenomenon due to the thermal cost. In this exploration the sunset phenom-
enon is treated as a Glitch to be deliberately resolved.

architectural resolution The three Glitch explorations are a creativeorigin that lessens the hold of preconception on the fragile beginning of the design process. While in-
herently unpredictable the Glitch phenomenon as an origin yields an atmosphere of improvisation and
discovery that is felt in the architecture.

light apertureHeat generated by the western suncauses shape memory alloy actuator wire to constrict withineach light aperture closing thin wooden louvers. Once the
sun has set the louvers relax again allowing for views of the
western sky.
Hot air captured in the apertures is vented into the wall cavity
and out through the garden roof above.

PREFAB PLACEDesigned to bepacked in a standard 8ft x 40ft shipping container,
this collapsible classroom is intended for young
victims of the 2004 tsunami in southeast Asia. The
classroom uses a material and tectonic language
similar to that found in the native regional architec-
ture of Thailand. Once primary places of education
have been rebuilt these structures can remain or be
repurposed without having the negative visual impact
of typical prefabricated emergency solutions.

ACADIANA OUTREACH CENTER
PERFORMANCE SPACE+SEATINGThe Acadiana Outreach Center ofLafayette, Louisiana is a nonprot organization that provides rehabilitation services, temporary housing,
and day programs for the residents of Acadiana. Myself and other architecture students from the Uni-
versity of Louisiana at Lafayette were approached by the AOC to design and construct a small outdoor
performance space for live music and group therapy in the summer of 2006. Our design goals included
using salvaged materials, providing consistent shade, having comfortable seating that discouraged over-night sleeping, and implementing local prison inmates on work-release in the construction process.

CAMERON, LA
CAMERON CAMP HOUSECameron was devastated by eighteen foot stormsurges caused by Hurricane Rita in 2005. All homes in Cameron were destroyed as a result of the surge
The Cameron Camp House is a retrotted prefab steel Quonset Hut elevated eighteen feet above grade
on a braced piling structure. Originally used as temporary buildings in WWI the Quonset is known for itsresistance to lateral loading and its exibility of interior space. Not used as a permanent residence the
Cameron Camp House also doubles as an emergency shelter for parish residents.
