In the last year, Chuck la Rue has been many places and met countless new friends from sea to shining sea. The Rochester cook decided to take a year off and make a trek across our nation that began in May 2010 near Washington, D.C. and ended in Santa Monica, California in May of this year in order to raise funds and awareness for ALS, and also just to have some fun. There will be a reception for la Rue at Victoria’s restaurant on Thursday from 6 pm to 9 pm, which will also be a fundraiser for ALS. Rochester will hold its annual ALS walk on Saturday. The 1.8 mile walk will begin at 10 am at Soldiers Field Park, with check-ins beginning at 9 am. The thought of going on this adven- ture was spurred on by Chuck’s desire to do his part to advance research to help those suffering from ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, as his brother, Dave la Rue, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, had been. Many people raise funds by biking across the country, but la Rue decided that he would rather take his time and be one of the six to seven people who will walk across the United States on a given year. He set out with a back pack, a stroller, two changes of clothes, some rain gear, a tent, a sleeping bag, and a bit of food and water. “I like walking. You get to meet a lot more people and take more in,” said la Rue. “There were a lot of small, neat experiences. A lot of people go faster, but I didn’t want to miss anything along the way or regret anything.” Chuck studied maps, and found the American Discovery Trail, a map for cross-country pedestrian treks pub- lished each year by the Federal gov- ernment. The trail changes from year to year and includes both roads and walking/biking paths. This provided a basic guide, but Chuck filled in the details. “I talked to local people to get advice,” la Rue said. “Sometimes the guy at the local gas station knows a better back route or bike trail.” He also read up on stories and advice given by others who had walked across the country or walked long distances, in order to get in the right mindset and do appropriate planning. “What I heard from the majority of them was, ‘just do it, forget about the obstacles. If you think it through too much, you’ll never get it done.’” One of the early supporters of la Rue’s quest was his uncle Don Hadley, owner of O & B shoes in Rochester. Hadley and ECCO shoes donated the six pairs of shoes that la Rue would use during the hike, which spanned more than 3200 miles. “They were excited about following Chuck in their shoes, and why not?” remarked Hadley. Hadley also put his money on the line, offering to donate $5000 to ALS research if Chuck were successful in his goal of walking across the county. “He’s been very encouraging from the start,” said la Rue. “A lot of people didn’t take me seriously. He took me seri- ously.” “Not at first,” Hadley countered in jest. “Then I saw he was really going to do this and I real- ized it would be a chore for someone in the shoe business to come up with $5000. Chuck called me from Santa Monica and I told him he had the wrong number.” “I didn’t have him write the checks right away so that I could see his face while he did it,” la Rue said grinning. In a stroke of luck, they found out that Hadley’s donation will go much further this year because an anony- mous donor has offered to match any donation for ALS research until later this fall. This donor will also match the donations brought in by the recep- tion at Victoria’s on Thursday and the ALS walk on Saturday. Chuck kept a fundraising website at firstgiving.com, through which he raised more the $7000. Chuck also raised another $1000 in direct dona- tions. The journey began with a false start. After visiting with his sister Mary, a resident of the Washington D.C. area, Chuck set off the first day on the Chesapeake and Ohio trail. He lost his direction and ended up a half mile behind his starting point by night time. Chuck then gathered his bearings and followed the trail for 160 miles and into Pennsylvania. The first full state that la Rue traversed was Ohio. He found people across the country are quite hospitable and willing to help out. “People in America like stuff like this, they like to see you make it,” la Rue said. “There’s people who have always wanted to do something like that and they really encourage you because you’re kind of living out their dreams. “ Chuck kept heading west and when he got to northern Iowa, he made good time to get back for a layover in Rochester. He walked from Decorah, Iowa to Rochester in two days at a rate of over 35 miles per day, whereas he normally paced himself at about 20 miles per day. Upon returning to town, a few days to refurbish his equipment, reflect on his travels to that point, and go camp- ing with his grandchildren. After leaving Rochester, la Rue walked to visit his hometown of Ver- million, South Dakota and then head- ed south through Iowa and Nebraska. Chuck got food poisoning and saw a doctor in Nebraska. It turned out that the doctor had a sister with ALS, and asked Chuck to visit her. During this time, Chuck’s brother’s condition took a turn for the worse in his hospital room in Colorado. With help from the doctor and other friends, Chuck put his walk on hold and caught a quick flight to spend eight days with his brother. “It was like a family vacation, it wasn’t a depressing time like everyone would expect. I never thought we’d get to spend time together like that. My brother perked up quite a bit when we came around. We’d go get coffee and we got Dave coffee that he was able to drink through his feeding tube,” la Rue remembers. “Dave was always positive, he tended to be quite funny most of the time,” said la Rue. “He never com- plained about being sick.” I n October, Chuck and his family had plans to attend the ALS walk in Colorado Springs, and his father picked him up to join them. Dave passed away, surrounded by family just two days before the walk. Chuck went back to continue the walk where he had left off in Nebraska. He made it into Colorado before stop- ping to spend the winter on a ranch in Colorado, close to the New Mexico border, that had no running water or electricity. Chuck had some time to reflect on what his travels had taught him so far and also learned a helpful lesson from a mailman. “Throughout the trip, every day I was chased by dogs. I saw this mailman come to the ranch where there were dogs and he’d give them treats. After that, I started carrying dog treats,” he said. Chuck also found that he had con- quered some of the doubts and fears that he had while beginning the jour- ney. “At first, I was worried about where to camp when I first started out, but then I found that it was silly to worry about because I always found a place. “ People across America met Chuck with open arms. He was welcomed by small town mayors to camp in their city parks. Among other places, Chuck found refuge on church land, church basements, and farmers that Chuck would pass by granted him a place to stay. “They always said yes,” la Rue recalls. “Oddly enough, often I wasn’t the first person to ask to camp on their land.” “I’d catch people at the right time, I never knocked on doors, that scares people and there are dogs that aren’t tied up. I just seemed to run into people that helped along the way,” said la Rue. On the home stretch, Chuck faced some of the most difficult walking, passing through the desert where water was a constant concern. During one of the longest dry stretches, a vehicle stopped to ask la Rue for directions and during this interaction, supplied Chuck with another gallon of water. In May, Chuck met his sister Julie (a resident of Santa Monica) and other family members, friends, and the local chapter of the ALS Association to fin- ish off the walk under the palm trees of Santa Monica, California. He spent a few months visiting with family and friends in California and Colo- rado before returning to Rochester in August. While la Rue will begin working again soon, and readapting to a more conventional lifestyle, he still has an itch for adventure. “It was really hard for me to stop walking, I had fun doing it. I have to stop and get my life organized again, but I foresee doing something like this again in the future.” Chuck and his two sisters are in the process of co-writing a book about their shared experience of having cared for and lost a family member to ALS. “It’s not just going to be about my walk, it’s going to be about the year Rochester man walks across the nation for a cause See ALS WALK Page 3 BY NATE LANGWORTHY [email protected] The blame game PAGE 4 Government in the week PAGE 6 Byron’s plan PAGE 7 Stewartville EDA approves TIF PAGE 10 Celebrate 25th Anniversary of the Trails INSIDE TODAY’S JOURNAL PRSRT STD ECR WSS US POSTAGE PAID ROCHESTER, MN PERMIT #56 RESIDENTIAL POSTAL PATRON Weekly Edition Wednesday, September 7, 2011 Volume 1 Issue 23 OLMSTED COUNTY Byron l Chatfield l Dover l Eyota l Oronoco l Pine Island l Rochester l Stewartville “Olmsted County’s Largest Local Newspaper With Over 62,000 Copies Distributed Every Week” By Jason Sethre Publisher of the Fillmore County Journal and Olmsted County Journal Cell phone: 507-251-5297 As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Root River Trail, I can’t help but to reflect on its significance. 2010 and ALS,” la Rue said At O & B shoes in downtown Rochester, there is a map displayed in a window that was updated to follow la Rue’s journey. In addition, hundreds of rocks were painted and marked in the store front with the names of people who followed Chuck’s journey on Facebook, many of them people he had met along the way. “Now I’ve got friends all across the country that I’ll probably be in contact with for a long time,” said la Rue. “I met so many good people. So many people who had been touched by ALS.” Like his brother, Chuck has an optimistic outlook on combating the illness. “Right now there’s not an effective treatment for ALS, but there’s been recent findings where they are making progress,” la Rue said. “I never imag-ined that they’d be making progress like it appears that they are mak-ing now, but they are going to need

money for all that to pan out.” Chuck will continue to do his part by participating in Saturday’s walk for ALS at Soldier’s Field Park, and hopes that others will join him and donate to

the cause. Participants are welcomed to join the Chuck Walking team at the event. To make a donation, visit the ALS Association – www.alsa.org

Letter about the blame gameTo the Editor, When you have a problem is it more important to find out the person to blame or to find a solution? In our current recession the President and the Democrats blamed Pres. Bush and the Republicans, which is consid-ered good politics - (always blame the other party for the bad things, take credit for the good). Next it was the insur-ance industry, the banks, busi-ness, rich people, the tea party, drug companies, taxes too low, etc. I’m reminded about the story of the wild pigs in the forest. The villagers loved to catch them, (they were delicious). The only problem was that the pigs were wily and you could

never get near them. But a fel-low came along and told the villagers that he could get them all if they gave him a little time. He took some corn out into the forest and every day he took more out for them. He put a few fence posts around the area, adding a fence with an open gate. He waited until those trusting pigs got into the enclosure and closed the gate. The villagers said the pigs were very tasty. For many years now the Fed-eral Government paid 56 per-cent of the cost of welfare for the states while the state and local governments shared the other 44 percent The Fed sets the standards and rules. The Federal Government pays a big portion of highway construc-tion costs - but they set the

rules including requiring pre-vailing wages. If a local gov-ernment wants a new building or project the federals will pay part of the costs...but they set the rules. Our medical bills are now going to be paid by the Federal Government but they set the rules. The Federal Government is now borrowing 40 percent of the money that they are “giv-ing” to us. This is a mortgage on every person in the country for many years to come. The dollars that many of us have put away for our retirement will not buy very much in the years to come. Republi-cans, Tea Party members and many conservative Democrats are coming to understand that nothing is free. We cannot continue to spend beyond our means. The gate is closing rap-idly. It’s hard for many of us to listen to the President when he gives this speech “There is nothing that we can’t do if we all get together” and in the next speech he is listing a new group as enemies.

We know that sometimes life deals us a bum rap, situations can occur that we have little or no control over

financially. In today’s ever-changing economic cycle, job challenges arise that may have caused financial hardships or unexpected medical emergencies may have dealt an unfair blow. As much as we try, sometimes it is very difficult to rebound from unexpected or out-of-control finances without help or understanding from some outside source. We want that opportunity to help. Re-establishing credit can be as important as buying a car. We have lenders working right now to finalize loans. Let’s see how this program works: From the start, our customers are under no obligation to enter this program, they can say no at any time. This program is designed to re-establish their credit in as short a period of time as possible. Other dealerships offer “Buy Here - Pay Here” operations. Generally, you buy a vehicle they want to get rid of, and no credit is established since they do not report to the credit bureau (unless payments are not made) and there are no warranties or guarantees. If credit is established, it’s only with

them so people are trapped inside their spiral of driving less than desirable vehicles and never improving their credit situation, which is the primary mission in this venture. At Zumbrota Ford, we offer all of our customers the opportunity to drive the vehicle that is right for them. We only use lenders that help re-establish your credit on 1998 and newer models, that meet the conditioning and mileage criteria of the lenders. Many of these vehicles have remaining factory warranties and are eligible for an extended

service contract. After paying on this vehicle, credit will be re-established, provided payments have been maintained current on it and all your other credit obligations. Do you have: 1. A full-time job?

2. $1,300 gross monthly income? 3. Stable residence? 4. Down payment or trade? 5. Past credit problems with a drive to re-establsh credit? If so, we would like the opportunity to help you. Call 1-800-757-3080, ask for Brent or Greg for a completely confidential interview and drive home in your next automobile or truck form Zumbrota Ford tomorrow.

Scheib also presented frame-work and systems diagrams that will be used at the public meeting to aid in the public input process. The diagrams will depict a green-way system concept, roadway sys-tem concept, bike and pedestrian

CASH IN TODAY!Sell your old gold, silver and platinum jewelry

today for cash or trade for new jewelry By Kevin Blanchard The Stewartville Economic Development Authority (EDA) and Housing Redevelopment Authority approved a $60,000 tax increment financing (TIF) proj-ect at a special meeting Tuesday night, August 30. The EDA approved TIF fund-ing of $35,000 for demolition of the commercial property at 400 South Main Street and the residence at 12 Fourth Street SE (Block 3, Lots 8 and 9). The EDA approved TIF funding of $25,000 for sidewalks and drainage once the demolition is complete. The approval of the funding is contingent on approval by the city council and sale of the property to a local developer. The $35,000 will be payable when the demoli-tion is complete. The $25,000 will be payable upon completion of the project. “We checked with our legal staff to see if this project would qualify for TIF funds,” Roger Hanson, EDA and council member, said. “We negotiated with the property owner to get us to this point. This is good use of TIF funds to clean up a blighted area.” “We have an opportunity to get rid of a blighted property,” Chris Stafford, EDA member, said. “That’s what TIF monies are for.” “The money should be used to level the playing field,” Tom Slightam, EDA member, said. “It should be the cost to bring the property to bare land.” “I just want to be sure that we can offer the same service to oth-ers,” Gary Stensrud, EDA and council member, said. “Can we handle the projects that are com-ing?” The next Stewartville EDA meeting will be held on Septem-ber 20 at 6 p.m. in City Hall.
