Each Cambridge MBA class is very diverse in terms of professional and cultural experience, as well as career aspiration. We are committed to delivering a careers programme which is tailored to the needs of your class, working to achieve the variety of goals represented.

Your partnership with MBA CareersYour MBA will have the maximum impact if you work closely in partnership with the Careers team. Our provision is carefully compiled to deliver the range of skills needed to achieve the professional transformations our MBAs are looking for.

MBA Careers: what support do we offer?

Career advice and information Using a range of resources, industry experts and career professionals, we will help you to understand your drivers and goals and have the skills and confidence to achieve the job you are looking for. Practical workshops and surgeries The programme of workshops and surgeries is designed so as give you the skills to achieve your job goals. Supplemented by the individual sessions with your MBA Career Consultant these structured sessions provide the tools to help you define your personal career goals, plan your career strategy, conduct research and job searches and then manage the application and interview process.

We recognise that you all have different needs and experience so many of the workshops are optional, enabling you to tailor the career provision to suit you. However our experience shows that there are some essential skills which everyone requires, and so there are some mandatory workshops which everyone is expected to attend.

Individual advisory and coachingIn-depth, individual advisory and coaching sessions with Career Consultants are available throughout the academic year. The sessions will start at the end of October, after you have completed the initial phase of careers courses and workshops, and are designed to debrief your CareerLeader report, identify and refine your career goals, and support you in developing a realistic strategy to get the job you want.

Recruitment eventsCampus events are one method companies use when interested in hiring Cambridge MBAs. Throughout the year, we run a variety of events hosted by leading name employers. Employers also post roles on our Online Careers Centre, contact students directly having identified them as potential candidates from the Profile Book, or from CVs posted on the Online Careers Centre, and work 1:1 with careers staff to inform us of job opportunities. Companies will occasionally host student visits to their offices. We also coordinate Alumni webinars throughout the year to give students an insider perspective of working in specific industries and companies.

Writing Effective Cover Letters Surgeries

MBA Careers

Many candidates make the mistake of thinking a cover letter is easy to write. A good cover letter requires a lot of thought, research and planning. This letter is your one opportunity to get the recruiters’ attention and give them a compelling reason to contact you. It is your job to show them how your skills, experience and motivations connect with the position being advertised.

There is no standard format but in the session you will learn the basic principles and learn how to apply them in a way that is personal to you. Your letter has to reflect your style and tone while giving a clear and strong message. With these guidelines you should be able to work with your peers to review each other’s letters and offer advice and suggestions.

Introduction to Case Study Interviews

Kate Gaseltine and Emma Chilvers MBA Career Consultants

The case study interview is no longer restricted to management consulting firms. Employers from a variety of sectors are increasingly asking applicants to go through some form of interactive problem solving in their recruitment process, as a way of demonstrating their skill at creative thinking and problem structuring through discussing a “real world” business issue.

Kate and Emma use their experience as both interviewers and interviewees to provide an introduction to this selection tool. Intended to be a preparation for the more detailed David Ohrvall “Crack the Case” later in the month, this session will look at the purpose of the case study and identify some key ‘do’s and don’ts’.

1:1 Career Coaching and Advisory Support

MBA Career Consultants

Our experienced professional MBA Career Consultants provide one to one advisory sessions for all our MBA students.

Each student undertaking a job search will be assigned to a consultant, with whom they can start to work in Michaelmas term. Students who are returning to their employers or starting their own venture will have an opportunity to engage with a consultant during Lent and Easter terms to focus on personal development coaching.

All our consultants have the experience and skills to offer career advice and support across a range of topics; however, if your assigned consultant thinks it would be useful for you to see one of the other members of the team, this will be arranged on a referral basis. Students also have the opportunity to engage with all of our consultants through plenary and small group sessions, workshops and surgeries.

The career consultant’s role is to support you in getting the job you want, offering advice and honest feedback as you undertake your job search.

They will: • workwithyoutoidentifyyourlongertermcareergoalsandaplantorealisethesebased

Your career consultant will hold you accountable for making progress against your plan and you will be expected to follow up on actions agreed.

Sign-up for advisory sessions is through the Online Careers Centre (OCC). You are required to have completed the Careers Leader questionnaire and printed off your report to bring with you to your first advisory session. Note that all students who plan to work with a consultant are required to complete all mandatory careers sessions.

After your initial session, further appointments with advisers will be available throughout the term, booked through the OCC. You will be able to schedule up to three appointments per term; additional appointments may be approved by the Careers Office as needed. We expect each student undertaking a job search to meet their consultant at least once during the programme (either in person or via Skype).
