How the 4 Noble Truths of Buddhism can helpChristians come into divine union with God.Buddhists attempt to completely eliminateemotional suffering by changing all aspects of theirminds. Christians attempt to come into divineunion by putting on the mind of Christ as St. Paulput it. This requires changing our thinking, willfulness, emotions and behaviors to those ofJesus a complete spiritual transformation. Thepractices and insights of Buddhism can greatlyhelp Christians in this radical transformation.

    Gospel: Matthew 22:1-14

    All Good Gifts

Maybe you remember Babettes Feast, or at leasthave heard about it. here is the story:

An impoverished fine cook made her way into asmall town where the religion of the area (and theconditions) made people hard and cold, afraid toenjoy or even to relate to each other. Babette hadonly a small stash of possessions, but in acomplicated way, over many days, she got moneyto prepare a huge, delectable, exquisite feast, manyservings, all for the uptight townspeople. As theybegan to taste and enjoy, they began also tocommunicate in kindness to eachother. They even danced in thestreets!

I have heard people say that themovie promoted self-indulgence, butI would not agree. Instead I wouldpoint out how similar it is to the hugefestival we hear about in the bible'sFirst Reading. Come to a feast ofrich food and choice wines, Isaiahsays. And, he repeats the same indifferent words, in the normal way ofJewish writing: juicy, rich food and pure, choicewines. This is to be a great feast, requiring whatmedieval England called a groaning board.

Sundays Gospel has a sumptuous feed too. Theking prepares a feast, gets his very best livestockfattened up, readied for cooking, seasoned, cooked, and then sends out his servants with invitations. Ifyou thought the people in Babettes town werereluctant, look: some people outright refused tocome. Others simply ignored the invitation as if ithad not been given, and a number laid hold of hisservants, mistreated them, and killed them! Theking in turn punished these and then, surprisingly, invited in street people. Food is meant to beenjoyed, not refused. And people are meant to befed.

Spirituality of the ReadingsOn the other hand, Isnt the First World currentlyfattening itself on food far more lavish than theancient world could even have imagined?Advertisements in the United States tell us weshould luxuriate, should pamper ourselves, shouldnot hold back. Who says you cant have it all?they say. how are we to respond, we who try to befaithful to God and Gods promises? And how arewe to help families without the means to be fed atall? Mighty problems.

As you consider this, it might be helpful toremember that Jesus did both: he fasted and hefeasted. he abstained from food for forty dayswhen he began his public ministry. Later on he hadoccasion to say, mockingly, The Son of Man cameeating and drinking and they said, Look, he is aglutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectorsand sinners (Mt 11:19).

Which is it for us, then, fasting or feasting?

Maybe we need to nuance thatquestion. Instead of making uschoose between only receiving(getting, grabbing) or, on the otherhand, only giving (here, take this, Idon't need anything ever), perhapsSunday's readings invite us to comein, to open up, to eat and enjoy whatwhatever is there, a lot or a little.Everything comes from Gods hand,as Jesus knew. When it was time forthere to be nothing leftlife, friends, peace and possessionshe let go of it

    all, with love.

Loss and plenty both come as gifts from God, not tobe received stoically, but with dancing.
