LEARNING OBJECTIVES
HSS continuing medical education activities are intended to improve the quality of patient care and safety. At the completion of the course, the participant will be able to:
■ Describe the roles of mesenchymal stem cells in immune based therapies and regenerative medicine in treatment of human disease and musculoskeletal repair.
■ Report the broad spectrum of knee infections across different clinical settings and specialties. They will also report and be able to diagnose and manage infections appropriately across these settings.
■ Report the controversies surrounding unicompartmental replacement and what is the most appropriate technique to use. Consequently, they will be able to select the optimal surgical technique.
STATEMENT OF NEEDThe field of musculoskeletal medicine is a constantly changing discipline. New treatments and techniques are constantly being developed, and the effectiveness of current methods is continually being evaluated. Clinicians must remain up-to-date on information regarding newly developed therapies and existing treatments for musculoskeletal conditions to continually improve their professional practice. In addition, they should be familiar with a systematic framework to determine when new technology is or is not in their patients’ best interest. To assist its alumni in this endeavor, Hospital for Special Surgery hosts the Alumni Association Meeting each year, which allows the hospital’s alumni to share best practices in musculoskeletal medicine and collectively address emerging topics. While there are many emerging topics to address within the field of musculoskeletal health, the Alumni Association Planning Committee identified select professional practice gaps to focus on at the 99th Annual Alumni Association Meeting, including unicompartmental knee replacement, limb salvage, spine, regenerative medicine, knee infection, and musculoskeletal imaging. The subjects below represent select professional practice gaps identified by the Alumni Meeting Planning Committee after reviewing participant evaluations from the 2016 meeting.

■ Discuss how the development of one’s practice after training affects preferences for treatment of common hand conditions. They will discuss and compare differences between institutions’ preferred treatment approaches for common hand conditions.
■ Identify and selectmusculoskeletal imagingtechniques that enable themto identify and interpret lesscommon musculoskeletalpathologies.
■ Discuss and be able to implementevidence-based prevention methods and treatments for common spine surgery complications.
■ Debate the approaches for surgicalmanagement of the irreparable rotator cuff tear, as well as the considerations for treatment options. They will be able to select the appropriate treatment method based on these considerations.
■ Debate the pros and cons of revision ankle replacement and salvage ankle arthrodesis for the treatment of a failed total ankle replacement. They will also discussthe indications and outcomes of each of these treatment options. They will be able to select which procedure is more appropriate for a successful outcome.
■ Describe new musculoskeletalimaging techniques and explainhow they can be used to diagnoseconditions in patients. They willdetermine when it is appropriateto order these images and do soin practice.
■ Describe the state-of-the-art status of limb salvage and the relative indications for when performing a limb salvage for preserving function is appropriate. They will also describe effective techniques for limb salvage and be able to determine when to appropriately use them in practice.
■ Present the most commonly accepted indications of a unicompartmental knee replacement and summarize the short term functional rate and long term survival rate of the procedure. They will be able to determine when a unicompartmental knee replacement is most appropriate for a patient.
■ Report the importance ofbiomechanics on the diagnosisand surgical management ofACL injuries. They will alsoreport indications for the varioustechniques and be able to choosethe appropriate technique inpractice.
■ Describe state-of-the art modalities for management and treatment of various foot and ankle sport injuries. They will also describe the indications for each management and treatmentapproach, and be able to determine when to appropriately use each method in practice.
