    Student Appraisal Functions

    Important for counsellor to carry out continuousevaluation of ones own programme and services.

    In addition, evaluation of students is also part of

    the process of counselling at schools. The term used is Student Appraisal. It is an

    evaluation which encompasses processes formeasuring a range of student attributes, abilities

    and interest and for making professionaljudgments based on the results of thesemeasurements.

    Under Student AppraisalThe Counsellor

    collects and interprets data about students

    abilities, achievements, interests, attitudesand behaviors.

    Once all the data is collected based on all

    the assessments given, the counsellorsneed to do Individual Analysis Profilling for

    all the students.

    Individual analysisis a description of a

    students behaviors with emphasis onstrengths and weaknesses. It is a process

    that includes the observation and

    interpretation of behavior.

    Assessmentcomprises the instruments and

    procedures to gather data for student appraisal.

    Educational tests (Academic Achievements),

    psychological evaluations, interest inventories

    are samples of assessment procedures used by

    school counsellors.

    These assessment processes are used to help

    students, parents and teachers to gather

    accurate data and make decisions about

    educational and instructional programmes,student placements, career directions and other

    related issues.

    But, much of the timeIndividual Analysis for

    all the students in the school is not being done

    as the workload is too much for the appointedcounsellors in a school.

    Once the data have been gathered, counsellors

    also need to analyse and interprete the data

    based on certain standards which work as a

    benchmark for Interpretation.

    Interpretationrefers to processes that explain

    and give meaning in various data, observationsand information that counselors gather in

    student appraisal.

    Measurementis a process to determine the

    degree and boundaries of specific traits and

    characteristics being assessed using theearlier mentioned - assessment tools and

    methods.

    Measurement assigns a numerical value or an

    evaluative description to the trait or

    characteristic in question. As such, it is the

    aspect of appraisal that tells us how much?

    or how often?, and what is to know about

    the person who has been assessed?

    Based on the finalized data, counsellors need

    to form certain diagnosis of the students.

    Diagnosisis an aspect of appraisal that

    refers to specific identification, grouping and

    categorization of measurement results to make

    the best guesses or the best judgments aboutstudent behavior and performance.

    From there, it provides an overview of what

    counsellors, teachers , parents or school

    authority ought to do to help the students.
