Iampleasedtosaythatthingsat9thBrunswickaremovingalongnicely.Allsectionsarehealthyandrunningwell(includingthenewJoeyssection).Thegroupasawholeisalsoinagoodplaceandtherearenoissues.
Someofthethingsthecommitteehavedonethisyear(apartfrompayingthebills)havebeen:
• RenegotiatingthecontractwithBunkpuppetswhichtakesalotofpressureofffundraising.ThankstoLibby,SallyandGaryforthis.
• Wehad2break-insin2days.Janefromthecommitteeisdoingagreatjobmanagingourinsurance,therepairsandimprovements.ThanksalsotoCraig,Greg,AndrewandSallyfortheworktheyputintodealwiththepoliceandtheemergencyrepairs.
• OurcommunicationsofficerMarksentthisnote:Overthepast12months,thecommitteehasrevivedandredevelopedthe9thBrunswickScoutswebsite(9thbrunswickscouts.org.au)asthepublicfaceofourgroup.
Awebsiteisimportanttoinformpotentialmembersabouttheexistenceofourgroupandhowtocontactus,aswellasupdatemembersandtheirfamiliesabouttheactivitiesofthegroup.
The9thBrunswickScoutswebsitehadnotbeenliveandoperationalforoverayearbeforeacompleterevampwasundertaken,includingacontentauditandaredesignedtemplate.
Sincethestartofthisyear,wehavehad235visitorstooursite.Wewouldencourageallgroupmembersandtheirfamiliestovisitthesiteatsomestage.
Withthesiteonceagainrunningsmoothly,ourfocusisnowonprovidingmoreandmoreregularcontentandnewsabouttheactivitiesofallsectionsofthegroup,andparticularlywouldliketohearfromcubsandscoutswhowouldliketocontributestoriesaboutcamps,hikesandotheractivitiestheyundertake,aswellasphotosfromtheirparents.

9thBrunswickJoeyshavehadareallyexcitingfirst3nights.Onthefirstnight,5Joeysstartedtogettoknoweachotherbyplayingballgamesandtag,theyalsomadehelpinghandstoaddtoourfamilytree.Thesecondnightweweredesigneddragons,protectedtreasureandchasedtails.
ThethirdnightwemadeandflewpaperplanesandIgotinvestedasanAssistantJoeyScoutLeader.

OurCubScoutsectionhasdevelopednicelyoverthelast12months,andisfullto
burstingwithexcitingactivities,motivatedyouthmembers,andstacksofbadgesbeingawarded.
TheCubPackregularlyseesupwardsof30youthmembersattendeachnight,withahealthywait-listandanewlyestablishedJoeyMobensuringthatnumberswillremainhigh.

It’sbeenayearofgrowthin9thBrunswickScouts.JamieRossatohasbeenjoinedbySuRogerson,helpedoutbyLouiseStanley.WefarewelledChristopherandJessefromRoversattheendof2017,they’vebeenagreathelpallround.2018isaJamboreeyear,soplentyofscoutsinterestedinallsortsofactivities.
AtthestartofTerm4theScoutsgotstuckintoBillyKartsandCohenShieldonwhatwasafairlywetcamp–fortunatelythejaffleironworkedinthewetsono-onewenthungry.WealsolearntthattheBillyKartworksbestwhenthetyresarefullyinflated.Attheendofthecampthesuncameoutandwewerethrilledinachievingabronzeaward.Notbadforateamoffirst-timers.
WejoinedtherestoftheDistrictonahikedowntheBellarinePeninsulatoQueenscliff,anovernightcampwherewewatchedsomefireworksandthenacrossontheferrytoPortsea.WethenheadeduptoPortNepeanandhikedfromtheQuarantineStationuptotheFortsandbackagain.
HalloweenwascelebratedwithajointTroopnightwith5thBrunswick.Wedressedupaszombiesandhadazombiesurvivalnight,whichwasgreatfun,althoughwedidn’tgettochopanyone’slegoffwithamachetelikewewerepromised!
WefinishedofftheterminarushwithGilweroodownatMtMartha,aTuesdaynightwidegamewhereTobyandCharliediscoveredthatmulberriesrubbedontothefacedon’twashoffthateasilyandaCityCampinvolvingiceskating,Japaneseshoppingandlatenighttramtrips.
2018andwefocussedongettingeveryoneuptospeedwithcampingskills.Wewelcomedanumberofcubswhojoinedusattheendoftermandgotafewweekendhikesin.BestofallwastheDistrictHikewhereonememberofthepatrolwhoshallremainnameless(Axel)followedtherestofthedistrictwhoturnedleftattheoceanwhentheyshouldhaveturnedright.WewaitedanhourforAxeltogetbacktothestartbeforewecouldsetoffagain.Itwasahotdayalongthe
coastalroadfromTorquaytoEumerallaScoutCampandanevenhotternight.Thankfullywehadsomewalksonthebeachtocoolusdown.
Thebiggesteventofthetermwasyettocome–StradbrokeCup.NoneofushadeverdoneStraddybeforeandeventheleaderswerealittlenervousabout‘competitioncamping’.Asitwaswehadagreattime!Activitiesincludedabseilingandarchery.Whoknewhandsanitiserwasflammable,youcan’tforceaneskylidshutoneggswithoutthembreakingorthatriceisreallyhardtocleanoutofapotifyouletitgohardovernight.Despitetheseminorissues,wenotonlysurvived,wewereorganisedenoughtogetasilveraward-just!
Term2wasANZACDay.OnceagaintheScoutsandCubshadacombinednighttheweekbeforetomakewreathstolayatthecenotaph.WealsoparticipatedinScouthikeintheTallarookStateForest,thisyearwithbothacompetitionpatrol(Toby,Josh,EddieandChris)andalearnerpatrol(Annabelle,Lizzie,AxelandSid).Therainstayedawayrightuntiltheverylasthourduringtheparade,sowhileweweregladwedidn’thavetopackawaywettents,itwasadamptriphomeinthebus.
WeintroducedsomeculturewithaShakespearereadingnight,withabrightredwigorhattowearwhileactingin.Funnilyenoughalltheboyschosetowearthewig!EndoftermwrappedupwithaguestpresentertakingusthroughhowtotakebetterphotographsandajointCityCampwith5thBrunswickinvolvingavisittotheShrineofRemembrance,aChinesebanquetandthemovies.Itwassuchahugetermweallendedupbackatthehalltosleepbeforemidnight.
ThisTermtheTroopCouncildecidedtoincreasethenumberofpatrolstofouraswehavequiteafewnewboysandgirlstryingout,aswellasmorecubsjoininguslaterthisterm.Annabelle,waselectedasthepatrolleaderofLizardPatrolwhileJoshtookoverKingfishersasSeverinmovedupintoVenturers.Twoscouts(AnnabelleandToby)attendedtheScoutLeadershipCourseandplanningforCohenShieldisunderway.
Thankstoourfantastic,inspiringandcommittedleaders;LouiseourTuesdaynighthelper;theparentswhodriveustoandfromcamps;ourdistrictscoutleaders;ourGroupLeaderSally;theGroupCommitteeandeveryonewho’vehelpedoutonvariousnights.

TheleastpopularactivitiessuchassmallshowsandeventsputonbyothergroupshavebeenattendedbysomeofourVenturersbutforthosewhodidattendenjoyedtheexperienceandhaveslowlybroughtalongothers.
ThereareupcomingplansforjointnightswithmoreScoutgroupstoencouragemoretocontinueScoutingandbecomecomfortablewiththeVenturers.
CampsandmassactivitiesWehavebeentomanycampsthisyearandorganizedourownannualcamp;CampKathleenatBayPark.ThelargereventshaveincludedVG(VictorianGathering),AG(AnythingGoes)andwillhaveatleast6venturesrunanactivityforScoutsatthisyear’sMUT(MuckedUpTales)campand2ofourVenturersgoingwithanother2fromothergroupsgoingontheupcomingIglutecrosscountryskiingcamp.WearecurrentlyplanningtoorganizemoreUnitcampsthisyear.WealsoattendedANZACDayDawnServiceandMarch.
MaddyandConorhadafantastictimewithVenturersfromallaroundAustraliaattheAustralianVentureinQueensland.Carlos,MaddyandConoralsohadagreatweekatSnowVenturewith30otherVenturersattheRoverChaletontheBogongHighPlains.Conorhadagreattimewaterskiing,kneeboardingandbiscuitingatLakeNillahcootie.
VenturerssawIssaChanziperforminginCamberwellShowtimeandsawformerVenturersSamandTristanperformingandheardJudeplayingintheGangShoworchestra.
AboutourVenturersMorelandVenturerscurrentlyhas4Venturersand1Roverhelperfrom9thBrunswickwithothersfrom4thBrunswick,3rdWilliamstown,1stCoburg,5thBrunswickand5thNorthcote.WehavereceivedsomenewVenturersthroughScouts,butmosthavecomefromfriendsofexistingmemberswhichhashadaslightdominoeffectonmoremembersjoining.Westandatanaverageof18Venturersattendingpernightwhichisabigincreasefromlastyear.

Iampleasedtopresenttoyouthisyear’sannualreportfromtheKingsfordSmithRovercrew Majoractivities FourofourmembersattendedSurfmootandcampedwithKillibinbinrovers WeranastuntatHoadleyHidejointlywithtwoRoverfellowshipmembersandwereawardedrunnersupforbeststuntontheSaturday FourofourcrewwenttoMudbashandcampedwithbothEvansandKillibinbinRovercrews WehadtwomembersperforminGangshowandfiveatGangshowRovernight WefundraisedatChristmastimeandarestillwaitingonthemoneyfromthat.TwoofourmemberstravelledtoSydneytomeetSirCharlesKingsfordSmith’sson,Charles.Wepresentedhimwithafriendshipscarf,acrewscarfandasetofbadges. EvansRovers EvansRovershasstartedupinOakPark.Wehavealreadyhadseveraljointactivitiestogether. Crew Wecurrentlyhave5investedknightsandtwolinkingventurers.NoneofthemembersfromDarebinhavestayed.WesaidgoodbyetoChristopherwhoagedoutthisyear. OurmostexcitingnewsisthatwehavestartedaJoeyMobagain.Sunny,oneofourrovershascompletedherbasicJoeyLeadertraining,andJoeysstartedonThursday19thJuly.IwouldliketothankAlisonWoodheadDJSLandBenSmith(ACL)fortheirhelpingettingJoeysrunning.WecurrentlyhavefiveeagerJoeys.
Thisyearweparticipatedagain in theChristmasTree fundraisingactivity runbyMorelandDarebinDistrict.TheGroupCommitteesoldtreesforoneday,andtherovercrewdidoneday.Ourshareoftheprofitswasover$600foreachday.
Many of our cubs participated in the Torch Up Campaign, and earned a headlamp forintroducingtheirfriendstocubbing.
Twoofourscoutspresentedtheirschoolprincipalandassistantprincipalwithafriendshipscarf at theendof2017.Thiswas to show their appreciation toCoburgNorthPrimarySchool forallowingourscoutstoparticipateinthe“MakeNoiseFestival”.HelenandKylawereverysurprisedwhentwoscoutsmadethepresentationandsaidtheyfeltveryhonoured.
AhighlightfortwoofourroverswastravellingtoSydneytomeetSirCharlesKingsfordSmith’ssonCharles.Theypresentedhimwithafriendshipscarf,acrewscarfandasetofbadges.
Ithasbeenwonderfultowelcometwonewleaderstoourgroup.SuRogersonisanassistantscoutleaderandSunnyAguilarisourJoeymobleader.Ourleadershavedoneanoutstandingjobincompletingtheirbasictraining.BenSmith,SteveJonesandSunnyAguilarhaveallcompletedtheirbasictraining,andSamSmithwillhavecompletedhisroverbasictrainingattheendofNovember.Andrew Lanchbury, Jamie Rossato, Ben Smith and Sunny Aguilar are also well on the way tocompletingtheiradvancedtraining.
Due to thewetweather at the end of the year, our ice-blocking nightwas postponed toFebruaryandwasrunasawelcomebacknight.Allsectionsparticipatedandmanyparents.Everyonehadagreattime,andtheice-blocksaregettingbiggereveryyear,Isawonearriveonatrolley.Thegrouphasdecidedtokeepthisactivityasawelcomebackactivityatthestartoftheyear.
TwoofouryouthmembersparticipatedinGangShowthisyear–JudeAngoveintheorchestraandSamSmithinthecast.Itwasgreattoseescoutfamiliessupportthemintheaudience.

IwouldalsoliketothankKlaraHansenandthecommitteewhohaveworkedtirelesslybehindthescenestoensurethatourleadershavetheresourcesandequipmenttoprovidegreatscoutingactivitiesforouryouthmembers.OurwebsitehasbeenupdatedbyMarkPhillipsandJaneKemelfieldhasdoneanexcellent job in followingupthepaperworkandrepairsneededaftertwobreak-ins.
