Artist in Residence: Mr Allan McKenzieAllan McKenzie is a proud Wiradjuri man� His strong cultural knowledge and experience is respected throughout Australia� Allan, possesses a high level of cultural knowledge based on traditional methods and applies them in today’s society to ensure the continuation of the Aboriginal culture�

Allan has spent the last eight years working across Australia in many realms that deliver culture and heritage� Since his early childhood, he has painted traditional and contemporary Aboriginal art and has perfected the art of traditional artefact making through his Elders teaching methods� He is a renowned yidaki player and has an extensive portfolio in art, dance and performing with all areas of traditional culture�

Allan is passionate about teaching Aboriginal people the pathway to strength and confidence in controlling one’s life and claiming one’s rights through practicing traditional methods of Aboriginal culture and preserving heritage� He is renowned and respected for his conviction and vibrant personality�

A welcome to country acknowledges the first PEOPLES OF THESE LANDS� It also shows respect to our Elders, Ancestors and our people past and present� It is part of my heritage and culture and is a protocol our people have observed for thousands of years� A welcome was needed from the Leaders and Elders before entering our lands which would then ensure safe passage�

The Darug Community believe the Earth is the Mother of all life and has provided for our people for over 40,000 years and we ask that she be treated with respect on passage through our lands� This site has a very strong spiritual connection to our people� So on behalf of my ancestors, Elders and the Darug Community, who are the traditional peoples of these lands, I would like to offer our hand in friendship as we all gather here today�

Shortly after completing my term as Australian Human Rights Commissioner, I established a series of International Conferences on Human Rights Education (ICHRE) which many of you have attended over the years�

The 2010 Sydney conference initiated an important dialogue on the contribution made by human rights education in furthering democracy, the rule of law, as well as the promotion of intercultural dialogue, social harmony and justice. Since then, we have visited South Africa, Poland, Taiwan, USA, the Netherlands, Chile and Canada� Together we have established a grassroots movement for the continued growth of world-wide human rights education�

I now write to welcome you back to Sydney to celebrate our 9th ICHRE titled: Unleashing the Full Potential of Civil Society.

The 9th ICHRE is a very special occasion for me personally� It is 45 years since my wife and I became refugees and resettled in Australia� This year, we also celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 25th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration which highlighted the value of human rights education�

It is also time to say thank you and to commend the Western Sydney University for its commitment over the years to advancing human rights culture, for underwriting the success of our conferences and for its ongoing support of the international human rights education movement�

I trust that this conference will further advance human rights culture world-wide and I encourage your participation!

9TH INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION CONFERENCE

Upholding the basic rights and freedoms of humanity is the foundation of a fair, decent and prosperous society. Australia is a society based on democratic values. We believe in mutual respect, freedom of the individual and the right of every Australian to live out their beliefs and choose their own path. We believe in equal opportunity and a fair and compassionate society irrespective of race, religion or background. We believe in the fundamental freedoms of thought, speech, worship and association. In Australia, we live in a land where ‘mates look after mates’ and where ‘if you have a go, you’ll get a go’. These beliefs speak of our responsibility to each other. It is my Government’s determination to ensure Australia remains a just, fair and free nation – with rights and responsibilities at the centre of our social compact. This Conference is an important forum for students and academics to consider current challenges to our rights and freedoms, and to develop solutions to build stronger protections. I acknowledge the efforts of your Convenor Dr Sev Ozdowski AM and the Western Sydney University in bringing together this important event. As the Parliament is sitting during the Conference, there is unfortunately not an opportunity for the Government to present at the Conference. However, there are speakers from our agencies who can speak about our shared national endeavour.
