Philanthropy Along with our passion for cars, is our passion for others. ARC is committed to making a difference in our world through sharing our knowledge and giving back. Some of our recent activities include:

March 2013 The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life was held in Beardsley Park in Sun City West. ARC members had their own team along with a booth. In order to raise money for cancer research the ARC members displayed their vehicles, obtained donations and even gave rides in their 1901 Oldsmobile. ARC has many members who have been diagnosed with cancer and are currently undergoing treatment. Other members are cancer survivors, but unfortunately, there are some who have passed on. The goal of this event was to celebrate more birthdays through giving to cancer research.

June 2013 ARC is currently partnering with Make-A-Wish to help bring the wish of cancer patient Zane Childress come true. Karen Pelten from Make-A-Wish contacted Herb Clark, ARC President, about helping them and Zane with a special project. Zane is just 15 and has been battling cancer since he was two years old. As Karen states, “When I called Herb, there was no hesitation and you immediately went into action.” As our members work together to get Zane’s 1972 truck running for his 16th birthday, it will be a labor of love to diagnose, troubleshoot and restore the truck to running order. It is also an opportunity to teach others what it takes to get this vehicle “On the Road Again” (see our “On The Road Again” program). In addition, this will a tribute to Zane and to all of our club members, friends and family who have been diagnosed with cancer and are battling the disease… There Is Hope!

Press Release for Christmas In July Event…

Our plans include partnering with Mel Martin owner/curator of Martin Auto Museum. This is a museum that is open to the general public and houses an amazing collection of vintage and classic vehicles as well as memorabilia. You can take a virtual tour to catch a glimpse of how extensive this collection is by visiting their website at http://martinautomuseum.com. Our members will be volunteering to serve as tour hosts in order to share their knowledge and expertise with others as we strive to keep Martin Auto Museum open longer hours and more days. Angels of Sun City West They don’t have halos or wings, but they are in Sun City West to help residents who need them. The Automotive/ Restoration Club, as a public service to the SCW residents, has formed a knowledgeable group of club volunteers who will be able to educate and assist local residents in many ways. The ARC Angels will be headed up by Lauren Matley. Lauren has a lifetime of experience working with cars. Along with Lauren will be a large number of truly experienced “car people” willing to make a difference in the community. The group was formed out of a need because the Automotive/ Restoration Club received several calls from SCW residents complaining they believe they had been taken advantage of by predators who look to take advantage of older people. Several of the calls were from widows who had sold their spouses’ car. They explained a person called asking about the car from their ad in the paper. When they came out to “look at the car,” they said the car was not worth anywhere near the price she was asking. After a lot of pressure, the widows gave in and sold the car for a few cents on the dollar compared to what they were worth. ARC has also received calls from residents who felt they had been taken advantage of by a repair shop or car dealer. One elderly lady wanted her oil changed and was pressured into spending close to $600.00 on repairs she probably did not need. So, what will the ARC Angels be able to do? Herb Clark, Automotive/Restoration Club President, says the club is not repairing or fixing cars. ARC will offer the residents of SCW free education and advice on repairs, recommend reputable shops, give out free appraisals, and also put on free workshops to help the residents of the SCW community understand more about the upkeep and maintenance needed for their vehicles. Lauren Matley said, “Most importantly, SCW residents will have a place to go where people will listen, educate them and help!” The new ARC Angels program can soon be accessed on the web at www.restoration.scwclubs.com. People interested in receiving help may also contact ARC by emailing [email protected].

ARC is helping those who truly need assistance by getting their vehicle back in running order.

ARC member, Tom Jones said it best when he said, “Just knowing the difference this program makes in the lives of those who need it most makes it all worth-while. We want to be of assistance, share our knowledge and provide learning opportunities to others because we are blessed to be a blessing to others.” .
