WELCOME TO EMMANUEL

We worship God and follow Jesus Christ,

learning and growing together in the Holy Spirit to serve in the world.

We will love & welcome ALL.

Welcome! We are grateful to have you worship with us. We believe that God loves everyone, no exceptions. This time of worship is an opportunity for us to give thanks to God with our presence and in prayer and song; and to seek strength, guidance, and healing through our prayers, readings, and the sacrament of Holy Communion. All who seek a deeper relationship with Christ through the sacrament of Holy Communion are invited to receive the blessed bread and wine. Please let the priest know if you desire a gluten free wafer. If you would prefer to receive a spoken blessing instead of the blessed bread and wine, when you come to the altar rail, please fold your arms across your chest as a sign of your desire to receive a blessing. If you are a visitor at Emmanuel, please sign our guest book in the front entryway or complete a “WELCOME” card located in the pew rack. Place the completed card in the offering plate or give it to an usher, greeter, or the priest so that we can respond appropriately. You may also contact the church office at 231-347-2350. Thank you for being with us today. Our worship is enriched by your presence and participation in the service. May the Holy Spirit bless you now and in all that you do.

FIRST READING Jeremiah 29:1, 4-7

These are the words of the letter that the prophet

Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the remaining elders

among the exiles, and to the priests, the prophets, and all

the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile

from Jerusalem to Babylon.

Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to

all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to

Babylon: Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and

eat what they produce. Take wives and have sons and

daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your

daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and

daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. But seek the

welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and

pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will

find your welfare. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

PSALM 66:1-11 “JUBILATE DEO” CHOIR ONLY Chant by George Job Elvey 1816-1893

1 Be joyful in God, all you lands;

sing the glory of his Name;

sing the glory of his praise.

2 Say to God, "How awesome are your deeds!

Because of your great strength your enemies cringe

before you.

3 All the earth bows down before you,

sings to you, sings out your Name.

4 Come now and see the works of God,

how wonderful he is in his doing toward all people.

5 He turned the sea into dry land,

so that they went through the water on foot,

and there we rejoiced in him.

6 In his might he rules for ever;

his eyes keep watch over the nations;

let no rebel rise up against him.

7 Bless our God, you peoples;

make the voice of his praise to be heard;

8 who holds our souls in life,

and will not allow our feet to slip.

9 For you, O God, have proved us;

you have tried us just as silver is tried.

10 You brought us into the snare;

you laid heavy burdens upon our backs.

11 You let enemies ride over our heads;

we went through fire and water;

but you brought us out into a place of refreshment.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to

the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now,

and ever shall be, world without end, Amen!

SECOND READING 2 Timothy 2:8-15

Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant

of David-- that is my gospel, for which I suffer hardship,

even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But the

Page 7: A A 1020 . itchell treet etoskey, 49770 231-347-2350 · 2019-10-10 · A A 1020 . itchell treet etoskey, 49770 231-347-2350 AY A 23 - YA ctober 13 , 2019 10:00 a.m

word of God is not chained. Therefore I endure everything

for the sake of the elect, so that they may also obtain the

salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. The

saying is sure:

If we have died with him, we will also live

with him;

if we endure, we will also reign with him;

if we deny him, he will also deny us;

if we are faithless, he remains faithful--

for he cannot deny himself.

Remind them of this, and warn them before God that they

are to avoid wrangling over words, which does no good but

only ruins those who are listening. Do your best to present

yourself to God as one approved by him, a worker who has

no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

SEQUENCE HYMN Blue Hymnal #411

THE GOSPEL Luke 17:11-19 Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ

according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region

between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered a village, ten lepers

approached him. Keeping their distance, they called out, saying,

"Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!" When he saw them, he said

to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they

went, they were made clean. Then one of them, when he saw

that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice.

He prostrated himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him. And he

was a Samaritan. Then Jesus asked, "Were not ten made clean?

But the other nine, where are they? Was none of them found to

return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" Then he

said to him, "Get up and go on your way; your faith has made

you well." Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

All these prayers, and for those not spoken but known by you

we ask,

Lord hear or prayer. Amen

in ourselves, and in the world you have created.

We repent of the evil that enslaves us,

the evil we have done,

and the evil done on our behalf.

OFFERTORY ANTHEM “A Song of Praise and Thanksgiving” Words: Phil Speary

Music: John Leavitt We will give thanks to Christ, our Savior.

We will sing praises to the Lord.

Let us bow down before the Holy Temple.

Come, rejoice in God's true Word.

We will magnify Christ's name.

Jesus' love we will proclaim.

We will believe for God always hears us,

And lend strength to every soul.

All of the earth will bow to worship Jesus;

All souls will bless the living Word.

Let us proclaim that Christ's way is perfect;

Great the glory of our God.

Jesus reigns as King on high,

Yet we're precious in his eye.

All of the world's vain pride will be broken

As God's children meet their Lord.

Though we may walk in paths of danger,

Christ will be there to meet our need.

God will stretch forth strong hands of mercy;

With our Lord we're safe indeed.

In the power of our God

Foes are scattered by the Word.

Jesus will care for all who love him;

Ever faithful is our Lord. Amen!

PRESENTATION OF THE OFFERING

Blue Hymnal #288

THE HOLY COMMUNION Eucharistic Prayer 3

Enriching Our Worship 1 Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts.

People We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Celebrant

All thanks and praise are yours at all times and in all places, our

true and loving God; through Jesus Christ, your eternal Word,

the Wisdom from on high by whom you created all things. You

laid the foundations of the world and enclosed the sea when it

burst out from the womb; You brought forth all creatures of the

earth and gave breath to humankind.

Wondrous are you, Holy One of Blessing, all you create is a

sign of hope for our journey; And so as the morning stars sing

your praises we join the heavenly beings and all creation as we

shout with joy:

SANCTUS (David Ashley White)

The Celebrant continues Glory and honor are yours, Creator of all, your Word has never

been silent; you called a people to yourself, as a light to the

nations, you delivered them from bondage and led them to a

land of promise. Of your grace, you gave Jesus to be human, to

share our life, to proclaim the coming of your holy reign and

give himself for us, a fragrant offering.

Through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, you have freed us from sin,

brought us into your life, reconciled us to you, and restored us to

the glory you intend for us.

Page 14: A A 1020 . itchell treet etoskey, 49770 231-347-2350 · 2019-10-10 · A A 1020 . itchell treet etoskey, 49770 231-347-2350 AY A 23 - YA ctober 13 , 2019 10:00 a.m

We thank you that on the night before he died for us Jesus took

bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, gave it

to his friends and said: “Take, eat, this is my Body, broken for

you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper Jesus took the cup of wine, said the blessing, gave

it to his friends and said: “Drink this, all of you: this cup is the

new Covenant in my Blood, poured out for you and for all for

the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

And so, remembering all that was done for us: the cross, the

tomb, the resurrection and ascension, longing for Christ’s

coming in glory, and presenting to you these gifts your earth has

formed and human hands have made, we acclaim you, O Christ:

Celebrant and People Dying, you destroyed our death.

Rising, you restored our life.

Christ Jesus, come in glory!

The Celebrant continues Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts of bread and

wine that they may be to us the Body and Blood of your Christ.

Grant that we, burning with your Spirit’s power, may be a

people of hope, justice and love.

Giver of Life, draw us together in the Body of Christ, and in the

fullness of time gather us with [blessed _______, and] all your

people into the joy of our true eternal home. Through Christ and

this congregation.

Give them your grace, wisdom, and peace.

May they and we be guided by your Spirit.

Give us confidence in our decisions,

Knowing that you are preparing us for better things

than we can ask or imagine.

And in all ways may we give honor and glory to you

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Amen.
