To Be In Communion By Fr. Chuck Dornquast

This weekend our Church celebrates the Feast of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. Similar to last week we thematize a core tenant of our Catholic faith. The Church has taught since the time of the Apostles that Jesus Christ is truly present in the Eucharist. That Jesus is not just symbolically but actually present. My most recent quip to help us understand this has been that God loves us too much to simply give us a symbol, God gives us His very self.

I remember as a kid inviting a cousin or friend to Mass and having to explain that although I was to receive the Eucharist, they should not. Sadly, the opportunity arises for the person to feel unwelcomed and unloved. The situation has also arisen in my life when a family member who was raised Catholic but no longer practices asks about receiving. Again the possible conflict arises. So, why is it that we as Catholic's run the risk of excluding? Why do we risk others feeling ostracized?

I can assure you it is not because we must preserve a sense of being elite. This practice dates back to the beginnings of our faith and rather than

being a means of exclusion, it protects and invites.

The Apostle St. Paul writes in his first letter to the Corinthians, "Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment upon himself (1 Cor 11:27-29). “St. Justin Martyr who wrote circa 150 A.D. had this to say: "This food we call the Eucharist, of which no one is allowed to partake except one who believes that the things we teach are true, and has received the washing for forgiveness of sins and for rebirth, and who lives as Christ handed down to us. For we do not receive these things as common bread or common drink; but as Jesus Christ our Savior being incarnate by God's Word took flesh and blood for our salvation, so also we have been taught that the food consecrated by the Word of prayer which comes from him, from which our flesh and blood are nourished by transformation, is the flesh and blood of Continue on page 3

that incarnate Jesus." The Eucharist must be a source of communion. This means that if we are in communion with the teachings of the Apostles found in our Church and live out the Sacramental union of our faith, then we approach the Eucharist in union. However, to receive the Eucharist without being in union with our beliefs or our practices makes "Communion" a lie. Receiving the Eucharist can be understood as similar to the nuptial moment of couples marriage.

As the marital act is intended to reflect the intense union lived out by the married couple, so too the Eucharist is the culminating moment when Jesus offers His body to us, His bride. The marital act outside of marriage or when not done out of genuine self-offering is also a lie.

It is precisely the desire which Jesus Christ and the Church has for communion which underlies our "closed table". A Catholic couple married outside of the Church has put themselves outside of Unity with the Bride of Christ's teaching. Because of this they aren't able to receive the Eucharist, they aren't in communion. A Catholic in a state of mortal sin should not receive communion because by their own actions they have placed themselves outside of union. In both situations, it was not the Church who placed someone outside of communion.

The Church's response is not a condemnation, rather it calls them back into union. The Church cries out, you're going the wrong way! You've left the flock! Come back to the Shepherd! Our faith is willing to risk everything that others might come into deeper communion, a communion which is penetrates the whole of life and not just what we do on Sundays. As we celebrate the great gift of the Eucharist, may we beg for the grace to grow more closer in union with Jesus Christ. May we also become more knowledgeable of how to live out our faith and teach it to others. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Eucharistic Adoration — Come and See!

Eucharistic prayer is a time of prayer in front of the blessed Sacrament — a host consecrated at Mass and made visible to those in the chapel. Most people find that being in front of the real presence of Jesus enhances their time of prayer. We have many voices calling for our attention:

• the voice of our self, • our family, our friends, • our jobs, • our hobbies, just to name a few.

How do we hear the voice of God in our life? Who is God calling us to be in this present moment?

Spending time face to face with Jesus can help quiet our hearts and minds. Through this, we can get a clearer direction and purpose for our lives.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is available every week and is held in the Christ Child Chapel, Thursday, 9:15a.m. (right after the 8:30 a.m. Mass) ending with Benediction on Saturday afternoon at 2:00p.m. Anyone is welcome to pray in the Adoration Chapel. If Adoration is new to you, feel free to give it a try!

Estar en Comunión Por el Padre Chuck Dornquast

Este fin de semana, nuestra Iglesia celebra la Solemnidad del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Al igual que la semana pasada, tematizamos a un inquilino básico de nuestra fe católica. La Iglesia ha enseñado desde los tiempos de los Apóstoles que Jesucristo está verdaderamente presente en la Eucaristía. Que Jesús, no está solo simbólicamente sino realmente presente. Mi más reciente broma para ayudarnos a entender esto ha sido que Dios nos ama demasiado para simplemente darnos un símbolo, Dios nos da su ser.

Recuerdo cuando era un niño invitando a un primo o amigo a misa y teniendo que explicar que aunque debía recibir la Eucaristía, no deberían hacerlo. Tristemente, se presenta la oportunidad de que la persona se sienta no bienvenida y no amada. La situación también ha surgido en mi vida cuando un miembro de la familia que fue criado como católico pero ya no practica pregunta acerca de la recepción. De nuevo surge el posible conflicto. Entonces, ¿por qué es que nosotros, como católicos, corremos el riesgo de excluirnos? ¿Por qué arriesgamos a otros a sentirse excluidos? Puedo asegurarte que no es

porque debemos preservar un sentido de ser élite. Esta práctica se remonta a los comienzos de nuestra fe y, en lugar de ser un medio de exclusión, protege e invita. El apóstol san Pablo escribe en su primera carta a los corintios: "Por tanto, el que come el pan o bebe la copa del Señor indignamente, será culpado de profanar el cuerpo y la sangre del Señor". él mismo, y así comer del pan y beber de la copa. Para cualquiera que come y bebe sin discernir el cuerpo, come y bebe juicio sobre sí mismo (1 Cor 11: 27-29). “San Justino Mártir que escribió alrededor del año 150 DC tenía esto que decir: "Este alimento lo llamamos la Eucaristía, de la que nadie puede participar, excepto uno que cree que las cosas que enseñamos son verdaderas, y ha recibido el lavado para el perdón de los pecados y para el renacimiento, y quien vive como Cristo nos lo transmitió. Porque no recibimos estas cosas como pan común o bebida común; pero como Jesucristo nuestro Salvador encarnado por la Palabra de Dios tomó carne y sangre para nuestra salvación, así también nos han enseñado que la comida consagrada por la Palabra de oración que proviene de él, de la cual nuestra carne y nuestra sangre se nutren mediante la transformación, es la carne y la sangre de ese Jesús encarnado. entre hermanos.”

La Eucaristía debe ser una fuente de comunión. Esto significa que si estamos en comunión con las enseñanzas de los Apóstoles que se encuentran en nuestra Iglesia y vivimos la unión sacramental de nuestra fe, entonces nos acercamos a la Eucaristía en unión. Sin embargo, recibir la Eucaristía sin estar en unión con nuestras creencias o nuestras prácticas hace que la "Comunión" sea una mentira. Recibir la Eucaristía se puede entender como similar al momento nupcial del matrimonio de parejas.

Como el acto conyugal pretende reflejar la intensa unión vivida por la pareja casada, también la Eucaristía es el momento culminante cuando Jesús nos ofrece Su cuerpo a nosotros, Su novia. El acto matrimonial fuera del matrimonio o cuando no se hace por genuino auto-ofrecimiento también es una mentira.

Es precisamente el deseo que Jesucristo y la Iglesia tienen para la comunión lo que subyace en nuestra "mesa cerrada". Una pareja católica casada fuera de la Iglesia se ha colocado fuera de la Unidad con la enseñanza de la Novia de Cristo. Debido a esto, no pueden recibir la Eucaristía, no están en comunión. Un católico en estado de pecado mortal no debe recibir la comunión porque, por sus propias acciones, se han colocado fuera de la unión. En ambas situaciones, no fue la Iglesia quien colocó a alguien fuera de la comunión.

La respuesta de la Iglesia no es una condena, sino que los llama a volver a la unión. La Iglesia grita, ¡vas por el camino equivocado! ¡Has dejado el rebaño! ¡Vuelve al Pastor! Nuestra fe está dispuesta a arriesgar todo para que otros puedan entrar en una comunión más profunda, una comunión que penetra toda la vida y no solo lo que hacemos los domingos.

Al celebrar el gran don de la Eucaristía, podemos rogar por la gracia de acercarnos más en unión con Jesucristo. Que también seamos más conocedores de cómo vivir nuestra fe y enseñarla a otros. Papa Francisco pide intensificar el compromiso de la sociedad con la familia El Papa Francisco hizo un llamado a fortalecer la familia, por ser una institución fundamental para la Iglesia y la sociedad en la que se aprende a amar, a rezar, pero también a vivir en comunidad. Junto con las familias presente, el Santo Padre realizó una defensa radical de la familia y de su importancia en la sociedad de hoy. El Papa Francisco recordó que “la familia es la primera comunidad donde se enseña y se aprende a amar. Y también es el contexto privilegiado en el que se enseña y se aprende la fe, se aprende a hacer el bien”. “Estas cosas, la fe, el amor, el hacer el bien, se aprenden solamente ‘en dialecto’, el dialecto de la familia. No se aprenden en otro idioma”, aseguró.

El Papa explicó que “la buena salud de la familia es decisiva para el futuro del mundo y de la Iglesia, considerando los múltiples retos y dificultades que hoy se presentan en la vida de cada día”. “Efectivamente, cuando se encuentra una realidad amarga, cuando se siente el dolor, cuando irrumpe la experiencia del mal o de la violencia, es en la familia, en su comunión de vida y amor que todo se puede comprender y superar”, afirmó. No obstante, advirtió, “la familia misma, así como toda realidad humana, está marcada por el sufrimiento”.

En este sentido, puso como ejemplo algunos casos recogidos en la Biblia sobre familias en dificultades, desde la “violencia fratricida de Caín y Abel, las peleas entre los hijos y las mujeres de Abraham, las tragedias de David, el sufrimiento de Tobías o el dolor de Job”; hasta las dificultades que sufrió la Sagrada Familia con la huida a Egipto, la muerte de Lázaro, la enfermedad de la suegra de Pedro y otros más que figuran en los Evangelios.

Pese a todo ello, en el Evangelio se muestra cómo “Jesús siempre es capaz de medirse con las personas

que le imploran por su salud o que lloran desconsoladas”.

“Siguiendo el ejemplo de Jesús –continuó el Papa–, la Iglesia también, en su camino cotidiano, conoce las ansiedades y las tensiones de la familia, los conflictos de generaciones, las violencias domésticas, las dificultades económicas, la precariedad del trabajo”. Así, la Iglesia se inspira en el Evangelio para ayudar a la familia, se deja guiar por el Espíritu Santo “para estar cerca de las familias, como compañera de viaje, sobre todo de las que atraviesan por alguna crisis o viven algún dolor, y también para indicar el destino final, donde la muerte y el dolor desaparecerán para siempre”.

“Durante el camino de la vida Jesús nunca nos abandona: Él sigue y acompaña con misericordia a todos los seres humanos, en particular a las familias, que santifica en el amor. Su presencia se manifiesta por medio de la ternura, de las caricias, del abrazo de una madre, de un padre, de un hijo. La familia es el lugar de la ternura”, aseguró. El Papa exclamó: “¡Por favor, no perdáis nunca la ternura!”. “En esta época con falta de ternura, hay que reencontrarla, y la familia puede ayudarnos. Por esta razón, en las Escrituras, Dios se muestra Padre, así como Madre que cuida y se inclina en el gesto de acercar al seno y dar de comer”.

Asimismo, hizo hincapié en la misión de la familia de transmitir la fe. En la familia “se aprende a rezar, la oración humilde, simple y al mismo tiempo abierta hacia la esperanza, acompañada por la alegría, la alegría verdadera, que procede de una armonía entre las personas, de la belleza de estar juntos y apoyarnos el uno al otro en el camino de la vida, aunque conscientes de todos nuestros límites”.

“Una buena familia transmite también los valores civiles, educa a sentirse parte del cuerpo social, a comportarse como ciudadanos leales y honestos. Una nación no se rige si las familias no cumplen esta tarea. La primera educación cívica se recibe en la familia”, concluyó el Papa.
