President’s Message

Summer is official now with the first hurricane passing us by; Fourth of July celebrations happening between the rain drops and our orchids putting out new roots like crazy! It is that important time of year for FGOS to begin the Election Process for the Board for the upcoming year. The Nominating Committee has been formed with Jim Pino (Chairperson), Joan Viggiani and Gerhard Conrad. We still need two members to step up to fill vacancies. This is your Society and everyone should take a turn contributing to the board.

Have you registered for the orchid symposiums yet? The first is sponsored by the Coalition for Orchid Species on Sunday, July 27th at Fairchild Gardens. The other is sponsored by Odom’s Orchids in Fort Pierce, a 2 day event, August 8th & 9th. These are wonderful educational events that you should consider attending. There is more information in this newsletter or check the Websites for details. I know several of us have already made plans to attend.

We are trying something new this month by having a movie night. Our raffle table will include some items from RF Orchids and other surprise goodies. Hope to see you at the meeting.

Happy Blooming!

Hi Folks!

Red, white and blue orchids can light up your orchid collection this Fourth of July!!

Cattleyas offer great choices. Although red Cattleyas are more common during the winter, today’s hybridizers have created reds for summer as well. Look for hybrids derived from Brassolaeliocattleya Oconee. Summer blooming white Cattleyas are most easily found in the bifoliate types. These have the advantage of a special purity of color, as well as often flowering more than once a year. Many hobbyists also know these as “Japhets” because they were derived from the preeminent Cattleya Henrietta Japhet (Eucharis x loddigesii), which was registered by McDade in 1946. And there is no better season for blue Cattleyas than summer. The blue color of Cattleyas may take some explaining, as no true blue exists in this group. Rather, there is a soft bluish lavender that is known as blue. In general, the smaller the flowers, the more intense the coloration.

Vandas are another group where, red, white and blue flowers are plentiful. Reds are frequently seen in the many-flowered, dwarf-growing Vandas previously known as ascocendas. Blue Vandas, bred from Thailand’s Vanda coreulea, are large and showy. Even white flowers, once almost unheard of in Vandas, are now beginning to be seen in some of the newer albino lines.

While we have discussed primarily hybrids in three specific groups, there are also many species of orchids that come in red, white, and blue. Cattleya species are especially rewarding, as there are both white and blue forms of most of the species in this genus. Unfortunately, the closest to red is Cattleya aurantiaca, which is properly more orange.

Blending red, white and blue orchids this summer

will add a patriotic flavor to your collection.

Shirley’s Corner By Shirley Decker

I will be on vacation this month in Arcadia, but do hope you will enjoy the film of “Wild Man in the Swamp” hosted by Stig Dahlstrom and a Florida Naturalist from the Fakahatchee Swamp in southwest Florida. You will be taken on a journey through the swamp to observe the many different orchids and plants native to Florida and a rare glimpse of the famous “Ghost Orchid”. Be sure to attend our meeting on Monday night, July 14th to view this great

movie!

When we are able to grow orchids and have magnificent blooms, we want to share the excitement and see how we fair

against other plants; judging is a way to do that! We invite all of you to bring in your beautiful blooming orchids to ‘Show & Tell’ your fellow members about your orchid; what you know about it, how long you’ve had it, and how you care for it.

Show off your blooming orchid and you get a raffle ticket. So bring your favorite plant in bloom, want to see what you grow! Click here for the Show & Tell Form.

Orchid Workshop Was Fun!

For all of those who missed last month’s meeting, you missed a fun time!

Shirley Decker, Jan Lowenthal, and Joan Viggiani demonstrated their orchid techniques and tips and there were a lot of them. Each of them shared how to mount, how to get organized, and how to divide an overgrown plant. Thank you Joan for teaching some of us that pulling a plant apart is sometimes the only way to break it up. Thank you for the pieces of your orchid so each of us can start a new plant.

Thank you Ladies for a fun night!
