A Warm Welcome From The Principal

The Abbey DLD Colleges, part of the prestigious Alpha Plus Group, can be found inLondon, Cambridge, Birmingham and Manchester. Abbey DLD College in Londonoperates from two campuses which are a short 10 minute tube journey apart.

Small classes

We believe small class sizes and the highest qualityteaching are the keys to success. This approach is verypersonal and means that students are focused on theirstudies and are given a great deal of advice fromteachers to maximise attainment and fulfil potential. Onaverage, class sizes are between six and eight students. In addition, we foster a friendly environment and goodworking relationships between teachers and students.

Expert teachers

Our dedicated teachers have an excellent knowledge oftheir subjects and, as examiners for the major examinationboards, they are well positioned to offer guidance andsupport in developing examination technique. Studentsare prepared thoroughly for examinations and gain vitallyimportant study skills.

Developing independent learners

Learning how to develop skills such as critical thinking, effective use of resources, analysis, presentation and ICTenables our students to be better prepared for successin our competitive, fast-paced and ever-changing world. We measure and assist our students to recognise theirpreferred learning styles and ensure our teaching istailored through a variety of 1-1 tutor groups andsupervised self-study programmes.

Assessment and monitoring progress

Small class sizes mean teachers can spend more timeassessing each student’s work and giving verbal andwritten feedback on a 1-1 basis. Teachers monitor studenteffort and attainment on a two weekly cycle. Reports aresent home regularly and include written comments anddata covering attendance, academic attainment andstudent effort both during curricular and extra curriculartime. Students and teachers reflect on current work andraise standards by agreeing targets in areas such as subjectknowledge, time management, revision techniques andprogress on coursework. This in turn builds confidence andraises standards.

Attendance

Attendance is monitored through registration at the startof every lesson. Parents are contacted if a student is notpresent in class. We are totally focused on ensuringstudents have a safe and secure environment in which tolearn and study.

Teaching & LearningAt Abbey DLD College

We specialise in giving expert advice and guidance to students on university courses that will enable them to pursue afuture that offers challenge, stimulation and economic security in an increasingly competitive world. Making informed choices

Making the right decision about the study programme hasa huge impact on successfully working towards the nextstage in life and at Abbey DLD College we value individualaspirations and ambitions. Choosing the most appropriateprogramme is a very important part of the enrolmentprocess with us, and we offer expert guidance during theinterview and throughout the student’s time with us.

Two year A Level programme

There are over 350 students in the sixth form, the majorityof whom are taking three or four A Levels on a two yearprogramme of AS and A2. We offer a wide range of A Level subjects, and recommend that you should haveachieved a good A*- C grade in your chosen subjects inyour GCSE exams.

One year A Level programme

A number of students are enrolled on this programmewhich is suitable for students who have taken their A Levels before but wish to re-take to improve theirgrades to get onto highly competitive university degreecourses. For sciences there are two strands which alloweither an intensive re-take programme from Septemberto January, or a full one year course. Other subjects canbe chosen from our full range of A Levels and areavailable over a full one year course. This may be done bycurrent students who might wish to take up a new subjectin a year, or by mature or gap year students who maywish to take additional A Levels within a year.

One year GCSE programme

The College offers a unique and highly successful oneyear GCSE programme for approximately 30 studentswho wish to transfer mid GCSE into year 11, or forstudents wishing to re-sit their GCSEs. The subjectsoffered form a core curriculum with a range of optionalsubjects and the course is delivered in its entirety in a year.

Students have a base area and a highly dedicated and experienced Head of Year to oversee the successfulcompletion of the course. On completing their GCSEsmany students transfer directly to join our A Level programme.

Two-year GCSE Programme [SEN]

A small number of Y10 students are offered places onour special programme designed to meet the needs ofstudents with specified dyslexic or dyspraxic needs.Students are integrated within the whole college and thisprogramme is especially suited to students wishing toprogress from a specialist school, such as Fairley House.A slightly reduced GCSE curriculum offers the mainNational Curriculum subjects as well as options for Artand Music.

Flexible programmes

At Abbey DLD College we are able to offer a uniquedegree of flexibility in our programmes and mid-yearand mid-course transfers are possible for many of ourGCSE and A Level courses. We advise parents andstudents to visit the college to discuss their options.
