The ObituaryJOHN HENRY “JOHNNY” JOHNSON, JR., was born on
August 16, 1953 to Alberta Dunn Johnson and the late John
Henry Johnson, Sr., in Augusta, Georgia. Johnny was baptized
at an early age and was an active member of Cumming Grove
Baptist Church.
Johnny attended Richmond County Schools, graduating from
T.W. Josey High School in 1971. He attended Morehouse
College where he was a member of the Glee Club until his
graduation in 1975. While at Morehouse, Johnny was also in the
Reserved Officer’s Training Corps (ROTC) and was appointed
Reserve Commissioned Officer in the United States Army after
graduation in June 1975. He was honorably discharged.
After Morehouse, Johnny attended the Howard University Law
School in Washington, District of Columbia. He graduated in
1978. Shortly after graduation, Johnny joined the staff of the
American Institutes for Research where he worked on the
Evaluation of Reverend Jesse Jackson’s PUSH for Excellence
Project. He later joined the Washington, DC Government
where he worked until his decision to return to his beloved
Augusta.
During one of Johnny’s many visits to his mother in Augusta,
he became reacquainted with Francine Appling, whom he
married in 1984. Their union ended in divorce.
Johnny was a proud member of Omega Psi Phi, Fraternity Inc.
Memories of Johnny will be cherished by: his mother, Mrs.
Alberta D. Johnson; two sisters, Ashley Jaime and Vivica
Delgardo, both of Baltimore, MD; aunts, Mrs. Virginia (Bea)
Stewart, Mrs. Louise Frazier, Mrs. Mozella Dunn and Mrs.
Lucinda Dunn; and godmothers, Mrs. Lillie MaGruder, Mrs.
Agnes E. Myers and Mrs. Mable W. Perry; dear friend, Ms.
Gloria Kelly; and a host of cousins and loving friends.
