Outstanding Quality of Teaching

The 2013-14 academic year has been memorable for many reasons.

Our most significant achievement has to be the outcome of our March 2013 Ofsted Inspection, during which Quality of Teaching at Bishop Barrington was judged to be Outstanding. As I mentioned in our previous Newsletter, only a minority of schools nationally have achieved this judgement under the new, more challenging Ofsted Framework and we are so proud that Bishop Barrington is one of them.

Other memorable events have included our Key Stage 3 Celebration Evening, which recognised outstanding progress of pupils in subjects and across the curriculum, with our Dux Award (Latin for Champion) being awarded to Daisy Ellis, Year

9. Our Key Stage 4 Celebration Evening was another high profile event, attended by our “family” of returning Year 11 students and their parents/carers.

You will all know that Bishop Barrington promises to ensure “Progress from Day One” for students in our school and we were delighted that our Ofsted Report included several endorsements of the success of this drive.

Obviously, we are also expecting that our 2013 Year 11 cohort will enjoy the high level of success they deserve when examination results are released in August. We recently said goodbye to them at their fantastic Prom and we will very much miss this delightful cohort of young people. We also wish them every success for the future.

However, we will also very much look forward to welcoming our new Year 7 intake of pupils who will enjoy their three day induction time in July, with a large group also taking part in an exciting, action packed two week Summer School. We already know that this year group is an absolute delight and we are so pleased that their parents have chosen our school for their secondary education.

These parents, and all parents in our learning community, can be absolutely assured that we take our responsibility, and the trust they place in us, very seriously and that we will go all out to get the very best for their children.

We have enjoyed a fantastic year and I know that 2013-14 will also be very memorable and rewarding.

The work ethic, skills and talent of Science student, Ming Li, led to her being chosen as Bishop Barrington’s Ogden Trust Young Physicist of the Year.

Ming was chosen for the award owing to her enthusiasm for physics which is displayed both in and out of the class room. In class, Ming’s passion and enthusiasm for Physics can be seen in her work. Recently, this was also seen outside the classroom when Ming took part in a trip to Kielder Observatory. She then shared her experiences of the trip with the audience at the star gazing evening held in school.

The awards were organised by Durham University’s, School of Physics and Astronomy. Along with her certificate, Ming also received

a £25 book token donated by The Ogden Trust and the award offers even more.

Tim Simmons, Chief Executive of The Ogden Trust explained: “As an Ogden Young Physicist of the Year you will be eligible to apply for undergraduate scholarships from the Trust – provided you choose to study physics or a physics-related degree at university.

The Ogden Trust is very keen to encourage talented, young physicists to consider becoming teachers, so that they can pass on their enthusiasm to future generations and, again, the Trust offers generous support to those who take this route.”

Sir Peter Ogden is determined to open up the opportunities which

Physics affords to young people. After going on from a school in Rochdale to Durham University, where he eventually achieved a PhD in Physics, he went to work in banking and then set up his own computer company. He believes in using his wealth to open up educational opportunities for young people and to give them as many chances as possible to have a fulfilling and stimulating career in science.

Presenting the prizes, along with Tim Simmons, was Dr. Pete Edwards (Director of Science Outreach and Science and Society Officer). The evening also provided an opportunity for the University to showcase some of its research with a variety of hands on activities.

The team of pupils who are taking part in the up and coming Global Schools’ Partnership trip to Nepal is continuing with its fundraising efforts. The flights are booked and they leave on 18th November 2013 for 10 days. Their next fundraiser event is on Saturday, 13th July, 2013 at the Bishop Barrington Sports Academy’s Open Day where they will be attempting a “virtual climb of Mount Everest”.

All 8 pupils, along with Miss Henderson and Mr. Johnson, will be using stepper machines to climb the entire 8848 metres of Mount Everest. They aim to do this in 4 hours. If you would like to support them, any donations would be welcome. Please contact the school for more information.

Also, they are looking for local companies to help them raise more money for their trip. If you are interested, please get in touch with the school.

MATHS AT ‘THE RIVERSIDE’

Since Easter, Year 7 students have had the opportunity to visit Middlesbrough’s football ground, ‘The Riverside Stadium’, as part of the mathematics departments drive to promote maths in a wider context.

The students were given a tour of the stadium and were shown ways in which a successful football club have used mathematics. Students calculated the area of the pitch, estimated the number of seats in the stands and were given access to the changing rooms and the trophy cabinet.

Last year, Bishop Barrington finished first in a mathematics challenge promoted by QE Sixth Form College in Darlington.

This year 4 Year 9 students, Thomas Corner, Daisy Ellis, Amy Forster and Owen Robinson, attempted the challenge, competing against 9 other schools from the county.

The challenge involved 5 rounds of problem solving and working together as a team. The 4 students excelled as a team, finishing in 5th place.

Eleven of our Year 10 students are on their way to successfully completing their bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.

They have all completed a day walk (in the pouring rain, thanks to our British weather) where they demonstrated fantastic navigation and team work skills. They then embarked on a cold and wet practice expedition. They showed determination when things were difficult, they all learned some valuable navigation lessons and they shone through as excellent team workers.

All students are now training towards their qualifying expedition in September, where we are positive they will all be successful.

A group of Year 10 students are currently studying Short Course GCSE Business Studies after school. All students are doing excellently and have set up a small business to put into practice the skills they have learned in the classroom. They are selling cakes every Monday break time in the main hall.

Astronomers are convinced there is much more out in space than meets the eye. As well as the stars and galaxies we can see on a clear night, observations suggest there is much more matter out there that we cannot see. This is known as dark matter - the missing mass in the universe - and the race is on to find out exactly what it is.

The Boulby Underground Laboratory, the UK’s deep underground science facility, located 1100m below ground in Boulby Mine on the North East coast of England, is part of this race. Recently, Science Teacher Mrs. Thompson was given the opportunity to visit Boulby underground Laboratory.

Boulby is one of just a handful of facilities world-wide suitable for hosting ultra-low background and deep underground science projects. Boulby is a special place for science - ‘a quiet place in the Universe’ - where studies can be carried out almost entirely free of interference from natural background radiation.

Studies underway at Boulby range from the search for Dark Matter in the Universe, to studies of cosmic rays and climate, astrobiology and life in extreme environments, development of techniques for deep 3D geological monitoring and studies of radioactivity in the environment.

YOUTH SELECT COMMITTEE

The 2013 Youth Select Committee will embark on a new inquiry into the role of the education system and the national curriculum in equipping young people with the skills for later life. The inquiry will look at the support currently available in schools to develop young people’s “life skills’, such as personal finance, political education and cultural awareness.

The Youth Select Committee is a British Youth Council initiative, supported by the House of Commons. The eleven committee members are aged 15 – 18 and include two Members of the

UK Youth Parliament, two Youth Councilors, the Young Mayor of Bristol, one elected representative from each of the devolved nations and three reserved seats for groups who may be otherwise under-represented.

A Bishop Barrington pupil, Samantha Hunter, is a member of Amplify, the Children’s Commissioner’s Advisory Group and also volunteers in a local women’s refuge in County Durham. The youngest member of the Youth Select Committee has much to offer. She said, “Being in school means I have

personal experience of what the school curriculum includes, as well as where I and others believe it could be improved, to better the lives of the young people”.

Samantha added, “I’m very pleased to have been selected as part of the BYC Youth Select Committee. I feel as part of this committee we can make a positive change on the school curriculum, one that is at the heart of the very best for children and young people. This committee is a great chance for these people to have a say in something that affects their whole lives.”

We tweet regularly about fixtures, results and to commend any outstanding pupils for their hard work in and across PE. We also tweet information regarding the PE curriculum, and any useful PE resources which are brought to our attention. We upload photos of pupils demonstrating many of the excellent activities which are features our department, as well as any current news from the department.

Year 9 student, and keen football enthusiast, Samantha Moody, captained her local junior football team, Bishop Auckland St Marys Angels under 14’s, to national glory in the ESF Football Festival at Skegness in May.

The event included teams representing many local communities from around the country. The St Marys Angels team played great football throughout the weekend. Samantha excelled and managed to score a hat-trick against Woodhouse Colts from Nottinghamshire.

During the presentation at the end of the weekend ,Samantha was awarded with the winner’s trophy from former England defender, Gary Pallister, and current England ladies, star, Sue Smith.

Samantha, and the rest of ‘The Angels’ have been invited to ESF Final Day, which is a one day event to be held in summer at an elite sporting facility that is yet to be revealed.

On Wednesday, 22nd May,

Amanda Coulson visited Bishop

Barrington to work with a group

of pupils from KS3. Amanda,

who has been at the top of the

national and international boxing

scene for just under a decade,

came to share her journey from

school age to her present role as

a Sky Sports Athlete Mentor.

Amanda visited the school as

part of the Sky Sports Living for

Sport scheme, and delivered

some fantastic activities. These

included team building exercises,

and a boxing session using state -

of - the - art equipment.

Head of PE, Martin Broom, stated,

‘The morning was absolutely

fantastic; the pupils had an

incredible time taking part in

activities they would not normally

have had the opportunity to

experience”.

Amanda was highly impressed

with the pupils’ performance

throughout the morning but one

task stood out for her. Pupils were

given sheets of paper, tape and

scissors and had to create the

highest structure they could, using

only these items and teamwork.

One of our groups, led by Year 7

pupil, Ryan Nichols, created the

largest structure Amanda had

seen in over 100 schools.

This emphasises how well our

pupils work together and how

independent thinking is integral

in our school.

Pupils at Bishop Barrington have

been completing fitness tests on

state of the art Wattbikes. The

Wattbike was born out of a desire

to provide the sport of cycling with

an indoor bike that delivered the

authentic feel of cycling. Pupils

and staff have been using these

bikes and have also been tested

on achieving their quickest time

to 1000m (1km). The top boy and

girl from each year group, and

top two male and female staff,

will go on to represent the school

at the local inter school Wattbike

challenge, hosted by Bishop

Barrington Sports Academy in

July 2013.
