A Blessed Father’s Day
Dear St. Mary’s family,
Records state that the first service of the Mission Church St. Mark’s Episcopal Church was
held on May 20, 1877, celebrated by The Rev. William H. Carter, in a school house at 220
South Palmetto Avenue which is where the north parking lot of Westminster Canterbury is
located. Thus, Friday, May 20, 2016, was the 139th birthday of our beloved St. Mary’s.
Most of you know that St. Mary’s was first named St. Mark’s Episcopal, but by the intervention of the Holy
Spirit and a mix up in the etching of the corner stone we became St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in 1883 when,
during the ceremony for laying the cornerstone, it was discovered that the stone was etched with the name St.
Mary’s, not St. Mark’s.
Although none of us has been around that long we can appreciate and celebrate the fortitude of our forefathers,
and foremothers. From the miss-named cornerstone through the difficult times and the less demanding times St.
Mary’s has been steadfast and has always maintained a formidable presence in Daytona Beach. From that day in
1883 when the cornerstone was laid to the present day St. Mary’s has worshiped in same location. A feat not
achieved by many and aside from two extensions in the early days and a couple of later renovations St. Mary’s
Episcopal Church has maintained the same ambiance of her earlier years, again a feat not achieved by many. We
still are the “pretty little white church on the corner” although the church was not white originally.
St. Mary’s was instrumental in starting the mission churches of Trinity (known at first as The Summer Church
and since dissolved), St. James, Grace, St. Paul’s - NSB, St. Timothy’s, and in1963 Holy Child, now known as
The Church of the Holy Child. Thus, we rightly earn the title “The Mother Church.”
We have richly blessed and we have been richly blessed. May we continue to do so for many more decades.
May the peace of God be with you,
Fran P.S. If you are interested in serving on the 140th Anniversary Celebration Committee for nextyear, please let me
know.
SEARCH COMMITTEE UPDATE
On May 18th the Search Committee met with Canon Nunez and received a list of candidate’s names. At this point in
time the committee is reviewing each of their portfolios and will follow-up with a mailing of our profile and 2015
Annual Report to each of them. After they review our information they will express a desire to stay in the search
process or respectfully withdraw. Following that we will be setting up Skype interviews. Once the Skype inter-
views are complete the committee will again review their findings and through the power of discernment decide-
which candidates to keep in the process for further evaluation.
As I have mentioned several times before, this part of the process is done in the strictest of confidence and no
member of the committee is permitted to discuss any matters in connection with the search process. PLEASE
honor that by not asking the committee members any questions relevant to the search process. What you can do is
PRAY, pray fervently that the committee will be blessed with the wisdom of discernment and we will hear who
God is calling to be our next rector.
Heavenly Father, you know every decision we need to make and every challenge we face. We need your Holy
Spirit to give us strength, wisdom, and direction. We ask you to guide us all the way as we begin the process of
calling the rector you have chosen for our beloved St. Mary’s. Amen
Please pray for St. Mary’s and the committee: Claudia, Danielle, Fran, Jackie, Jamie & Shiela!
A Prayer For The Guiding Light of God’s Spirit
O God, throughout the ages you have been a faithful light for your people. Today we once again find ourselves in need
of your guiding light in this time of discernment. We humbly ask that you would give us grace to listen to one another
with gentle and compassionate hearts.
We ask for trust for those who are afraid. We ask for hope for those who are discouraged. We ask for wisdom for those
who are in leadership. We ask for a fresh outpouring of God's spirit on our Search Committee.
Show us the way forward, together. In the midst of our discernment may we not forget the other work to which you have
called us - to feed the hungry, to clothe the poor, to shelter the homeless, and to bind up the wounds of those who are
suffering.
In your mercy Lord,
Hear our prayer. Amen

Rogers. If anyone is interested in serving on the team,
please contact one of these three ladies.
The team has decided to keep local in our efforts for out-
