SECRETARY’S DAY

Today we celebrated with our School Secretaries and acknowledged the fantastic job that they do for us all every day. A spectacular luncheon was provided by our Teachers and School Officers. Thank you, Dell, Maree, Amanda and Trish, for everything you do.

MOTHER’S DAY

Mothers truly are remarkable people – they give without counting the cost of the giving, and work tirelessly in the upbringing of their children. They protect with fierce loyalty, and seem to know just the right thing to say to sooth the worried child. It really is a unique role they have in life, and in our lives. I thank the parents of Year 2 Silver for the beautiful breakfast, and the children of Year 4 Maroon for the beautiful tribute to our mothers, and pay this tribute to our mothers: A Mother's Love

Your arms were always open when I needed a hug. Your heart understood when I needed a friend. Your gentle eyes were stern when I needed a lesson. Your strength and love has guided me and gave me wings to fly. May God bless you always and reward you for all you are and do for me. P & F ASSOCIATION

This coming Thursday night is our P & F Meeting for May. If you really want a say in how we do things at Sacred Heart; if you really want to feel that you’ve made a contribution to assist your child; if you’ve never considered coming – then come along at 7pm. Its productive – it’s friendly – and it’s (usually) short. We’d love to see you in the Library for this monthly meeting. VOLUNTEERS WEEK

Next week is Volunteers’ Week. The theme is Give Happy Live Happy. Our volunteers are Parents / Carers in our school community who give so much of their time to help support the running of our school. Our volunteers help in many ways to support our students and staff. They can be seen in the school Tuckshop, on the sporting fields, Working Bees, P & F, in the classrooms assisting our teachers with curriculum activities, the Mother’s Day Stall etc. For all this we say “THANKS VOULUNTEERS!” There will be a special Assembly on Thursday 12

th May commencing at 8:30am just to acknowledge the tremendous work you do in

the school for the benefit of our children.

NAPLAN TESTING

Our Year 3 and 5 students will undertake the NAPLAN testing next week. This is a rigorous test and one which requires much effort and concentration. In the tests of Literacy & Numeracy skills, only some aspects of Literacy (Language conventions, Writing & Reading) and Numeracy (Measurement, Chance and Data, Number & Space) are assessed. The tests contain items of varying difficulty to cover a broad range of student abilities, hence there are some items that most students will answer correctly and then there are some items that only a few students will answer correctly. Of importance to note is:

• These test results form only part of the total picture for a school, class, group of students or an individual. The tests were ‘pencil and paper tests’ only (many multiple choice) and were conducted at a set point in time i.e. They test where a child is at, and how they are coping with life in general on a particular day at a particular time. The results can be affected by mood, health & well-being at that particular ‘point in time’. • The student report forms form only part of the total picture of your child’s achievement. In comparison, a child’s school report is taken over a long period of time and allows for good and bad days, as well as a student’s individual abilities. In light of this, a student’s school report card is a far more comprehensive measure of their success. We also conduct an on-going series of assessments on your child to give us indicators of their reading age, comprehension level, and ability in a range of areas across literacy & numeracy concepts. Results of these assessments help fill out the picture of your child’s ability and will be happily discussed with you by your child’s teacher. • The writing task the children undertake is based on a ‘one draft’ scenario whereas their classroom work allows time for checking, self-editing, editing by another and then writing in final copy. This produces a vastly different result and needs to be taken into account when looking at their result. • Teachers in the contemporary classroom do not rely on ‘pencil and paper’ tests to give a complete picture as they did in the days of old. Now-a-days they use this as just one instrument in a range of others including: teacher observations over a period of time, active demonstrations (hands-on), group work, investigations, research, self-reflections, multi-media presentations and real-life experiences. These allow children to tap into their preferred way of working (multiple intelligences) and work to their strengths. We wish all our students well in the tests and look forward to seeing the results in a few months’ time. CHRIS BATHERSBY ON LEAVE

Our Principal, Chris Bathersby, will be commencing his five-week period of leave next week. This will incorporate travel time in Europe as well as an opportunity to study with nine of his fellow Principals at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. The focus of the studies will be in the area of the Catholic Identity of our schools. We wish Chris safe travel and look forward to his return. CONFIRMATION PREPARATIONS

This is a gentle reminder that all students who are involved in the 2016 Sacramental Program must attend either weekend Masses as preparations continues: Church of the Real Presence, Brighton – commencing at 6:00pm on Saturday Sacred Heart Church, Sandgate – commencing at 9:00am on Sunday There will be workshops this weekend for candidates only: Brighton Parish Hall – Saturday 7

followed by a celebration for children, their families and parishioners.

Rosary

During the month of May, the school and parish will continue working together with Devotions to Mary. This will take place every Tuesday morning commencing at 8:00am in the Sacred Heart Church. The Rosary devotional is another fine initiative to be involved with school / parish activities. Choir for Sacrament Mass

Our Year 3 students will be confirmed on Sunday 15th May. This will be our Family / School / Parish Mass

for Term 2. We need volunteers from the school choirs to join us in this special celebration. Mr O’Keefe is assisting with the preparations during part of the choir sessions. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

“Do not think that love in order to be genuine has to be extraordinary. What we need is to love without getting tired. Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies.” ― Blessed Mother Teresa

Wishing you a great week as we work together for the benefit of our children. Sincerely

Gerald Gerald Shegog Assistant Principal Religious Education

STUDENT COUNSELLOR

On Sunday let us pause and take time to reflect on our Mothers who gave us life, nurtured us, tended to our injuries, taught us diligence, loved us no matter what we did or didn’t do, encouraged us, praised us and so selflessly tended to our every need. Throughout each day, a mother is concerned with the well-being of each of her children. When she senses danger she protects them. A mother always carries her children in her heart, and her love and sensitivity are boundless. When other people have given up on her children, she will continue believing in them, supporting them and encouraging them. And when one of her children has ceased believing in himself/herself, she will still believe and offer support and encouragement. As well as being a role model for her own family, a mother can be a role model for everyone she meets each day. Her joy brings joy to those around her, brightens their day and brings them happiness. On Sunday, do something special to show your mother how much you love her, appreciate her, and do not take her for granted. Show your gratitude to her for simply being “mum.” Have a wonderful day with your mum. Teresa

IMPORTANT - UPDATING OF PERSONAL DETAILS

Have you recently moved house, changed your mobile phone or work number? Do you have a new email address? Does the school have your correct contact details? It is extremely important to ensure we have your correct contact details for communication purposes and in times of emergency. Please notify the school with any changes by logging into the Parent Portal and accessing ‘My Student’.

***The lost property is held outside the Integrated Arts Room***

Please ensure that your child’s school uniform and hat is clearly named. Also, can you please have a look at your child’s uniforms, including hat to make sure it doesn’t belong to another child? If so, please return them to the office.

SPORTS NEWS

A huge congratulations goes to our Bramble Bay District Cross Country Team last Friday. WOW! Sacred Heart children can run. The team was heroic and all runners gave their best. Best of all was the comradery amongst our team. It was certainly a special day, with three of our girls being selected for Metropolitan North Competition. Stella Kay, Macy-Lee Smedley and Maddy Simpson will represent us at Met North and we wish them the best of luck. Overall, Sacred Heart came in 2

nd place. That was amazing.

Next Friday, our larger team of runners heads for Zone 6 where no doubt Sacred Heart Sandgate will prove a force to be reckoned with on the track. Tracy Paskin & Catherine Waterhouse (Sports Coordinators)

INTEGRATED ARTS

Introducing Marjorie! Marjorie, the cow, has joined Sacred Heart students in the Art Room as part of Dairy Australia’s Picasso Cows Program. Marjorie was named by our Year 4 students, who are learning all about the Australian dairy industry as part of the six week educational program designed to teach children about where dairy foods come from and the health benefits of consuming dairy foods such as milk, cheese and yoghurt.

Armed with glue, paint and loads of enthusiasm, the students chose ‘Farm to Plate’ as their dairy learning focus, which has seen Marjorie transformed from a blank life-size fibreglass cow, into a piece of art with an important educational message. The students have been documenting their findings from start to finish in a learning journal which they will showcase with Marjorie at a presentation day later this term, where Sacred Heart will be going head to head with other schools from Queensland for a chance to win $250 if selected as the winning school! Stay tuned for further updates on Marjorie’s progress at Sacred Heart! Best regards, Kath McGovern Integrated Arts Teacher

National Volunteer’s Week

On Thursday 12th May, Sacred Heart will be celebrating

National Volunteer’s Week. We will be acknowledging the

contribution that our volunteers make by presenting an

Assembly in their honour. This will be held at 8:45am in the

undercover area. We then invite you to join in a special morning

tea as a thank you for the wonderful work you do in our school

community. Enjoy a free coffee from the coffee van and a

yummy treat provided by 4W parents.

LANGUAGES OTHER THAN ENGLISH (L.O.T.E.) - JAPANESE

母の日( Mothers' Day) in Japan

Like many other countries, we celebrate

Mothers' Day (母の日 haha no hi) in

Japan each year on the second Sunday

of May.

As with English, there are many Japanese words for mummy, mum and mother, but

little children usually call their mother "mama" in Japanese meaning "mummy". Older

children and adults usually call their mothers "okaasan" meaning "mum", however, when

they refer to their mothers, they use the word "haha", which means "mother".

Here is the kanji (Chinese character) for the word "mum", 母

pronounced "haha". This kanji is made from the picture of a mum nursing

a baby. Use your imagination to see.

Mother's day was introduced by Christian missionaries in 1913 and spread

over Japan by the 1930s. During World War II the mother's day

celebration came to a halt as western ideas were prohibited. Around

1949 the celebration started again and here we are. Mother's day in

Japan is a very important day now.

Children give their mothers red carnations which symbolize purity, sweetness and

endurance.

Happy learning Japanese!
