A Blessing for Epiphany Jan Richardson

If you could see

the journey whole,

you might never

undertake it,

might never dare

the first step

that propels you

from the place

you have known

toward the place

you know not.

Call it

one of the mercies

of the road:

that we see it

only by stages

as it opens

before us,

as it comes into

our keeping,

step by

single step.

There is nothing

for it

but to go,

and by our going

take the vows

the pilgrim takes:

to be faithful to

the next step;

to rely on more

than the map;

to heed the signposts

of intuition and dream;

to follow the star

that only you

will recognize;

to keep an open eye

for the wonders that

attend the path;

to press on

beyond distractions,

beyond fatigue,

beyond what would

tempt you

from the way.

There are vows

that only you

will know:

the secret promises

for your particular path

and the new ones

you will need to make

when the road

is revealed

by turns

you could not

have foreseen.

Keep them, break them,

make them again;

each promise becomes

part of the path,

each choice creates

the road

that will take you

to the place

where at last

you will kneel

to offer the gift

most needed—

the gift that only you

can give—

before turning to go

home by

another way.

KEEPING YOU INFORMED

The council meeting on November 9th began at 7:04PM with 9 members present

and 1 excused. Pastor led us in devotions. The Secretary’s Report was

accepted. Pastor’s report: She had 10 pastoral visits and 1 couple for marriage

in December. All Saints Sunday had very positive feedback. Sunday will be a

Taize-like service to remind us who we are called to be and reconnect with each

other. The Trunk or Treat was a great success and thank you to all who helped.

The report was accepted. Financial Report: September wasn’t as good (-

$1,200) but YTD we are +$7,000 and have enough in our checking to cover all

of our bills and are in good shape overall. The report was accepted.

Parish Life: Thanksgiving Eve service will be 11/23 at 7PM and all are

encouraged to bring non-perishable food for the food pantry that night and

around the holidays to help those in need. December 3rd will be the hanging of

the greens and cleaning the church at 9AM. Christmas Day service will be at

4PM. Buffalo Night will be 1/28. The Adult Class has been reading and

discussing “Reclaiming the L Word” by Kelly Fryer on what it means to be a

Lutheran Christian. Parish Outreach: No meeting. Parish Support: Our

Sexton needs have increased due to building usage and are looking into how to

best fill our need with more hours etc. The one oven in the kitchen has a gas leak

when being used, looking into the problem and fixing it (there is a sign on it not

to use). We are still in the process of getting estimates on the roof as well.

FoPoP: Potluck brunch 12/4 after service to share the work and mission

statement the group has come up with.

Unfinished business: Audits are in progress and have a few people helping to

get them done. Fundraisers: The Meat Raffle raised a little over $800! A motion

was made and passed to appoint Glenn Kraebel to the Board of Managers filling

the vacancy due to the passing of Bob Felsman. The Board of Managers has also

extended the current loan and terms to the congregation for another year. A

motion was made and passed to donate funds as recommended by the Board of

Managers (Hurricane Matthew Relief, Cantalician Center, LCLC, and Tri

Community Food Pantry). The Board also recommends considering taking a

portion of the balance at the end of the year and putting it towards the roof. The

organ replacement is being looked into with different options that will be

presented to the Congregation. The roof replacement is more pressing than the

organ and will be taken care of first.

New business: A motion was made and passed to have one service at 10AM on

12/4 (FoPoP brunch after); one service at 10AM on 12/18 (pageant and budget

meeting); and one service at 4PM on 12/25. The Budget meeting will be on

11/20 at 6:30PM and the Congregational Budget Meeting will be on 12/18 after

the 10AM service.

The meeting adjourned at 8:45PM with the Lord’s Prayer.

PARISH OUTREACH

VISITATION/EUCHARISTIC MINISTRY

A renewed visitation ministry at POP has begun to form under the

leadership of Sandy King and Pastor Rebecca. This group of

volunteers has started a visitation cycle for those who are not able

to attend worship on a regular basis. As this group continues to

form and organize, we are looking for the names of those

interested in doing visits and those who may wish to be visited and

are not sure they are on the visitation list. Contact the church

office if you are interested in visiting or being visited. The hope of

the group is to connect all members of POP, both those in worship

on Sunday and those who are not, with each other so that everyone

can fully experience what it means to be body of Christ together.

Training for this group will take place shortly, so tell us soon if

you are interested!

FROM PASTOR REBECCA As part of my continued attempt at figuring out my schedule and

how I can best use my time and in the hope of trying to live into

the draft of our new vision statement, I have decided to try

something new, at the encouragement of Linda. So on Thursday

afternoons you will find me out in the community – either at Tim

Hortons or Wegmans (or someplace similar) available to all of you

and anyone else for prayer or conversation, or out visiting some of

you at the places you work and volunteer. Like everything else,

this will be a work in progress, but hopefully fruitful for all of us.

Check the bulletin each week, Facebook, or call/text my cell

(available on the church answering machine or in the directory) for

the most up-to-date information and hopefully in a few weeks a

pattern will emerge!

FAMILY TABLE FOOD MINISTRY

Family Table Food Ministries is up and running again with a new

menu! For information regarding the resumption of this ministry,

please talk to Amy or Dave Day. Menus are available monthly

online and at church. If the cost of food is an issue for you, please

see Dave, Amy or Pastor Rebecca.

PARISH OUTREACH

LUGGAGE TREE

Instead of doing our angel tree this year, we will be collecting

donations on behalf of an organization called Luggage with Love

of WNY. Their mission is to provide children in foster care with a

piece of luggage to replace the garbage bags that are often used to

transport their belongings from place to place. There will be three

ways you can contribute this season.

1. Donate a gently used item that you no longer have a use

for. Acceptable items include: small suitcases/carry-on

sized bags, duffle bags, backpacks, or diaper bags. Children

in care range from Birth – 18.

2. Purchase a new item to donate.

3. Sponsor a bag. Contribute $1, $5, $10, etc. towards the

purchase of a new bag. Look for special envelopes coming

to a pew near you!

Keep an eye for our Luggage Tree and special items available to

sponsor. All donations due by Sunday, Dec 18. For more

information see Austin Freund.

CURRENT COLLECTIONS

Our clothing shed is in the back near the garage. Paper recyclables

can be dropped off in the bin located near the clothing shed. Soda

can tabs are collected in the kitchen. These benefit the Ronald

McDonald House. The collection of cans & bottles benefits our

youth group. Please drop bottles and cans off at church and

remember to separate out plastic and glass! Our food collection to

benefit the Tri-Community Food Pantry continues. Please put non-

perishable goods in the bin in the narthex.

NEW SCHEDULE IN EFFECT

Please note that our new schedule is in effect. Generally, Pastor

Rebecca will not be in the office on Mondays. If you have an

emergency, you may call her cell phone. The office closure is

planned for Monday, but could change due to other commitments.

If you need to see or speak with her on a Monday, please call and

make arrangements with her to switch days.

FoPoP POTLUCK BRUNCH

You’re all invited to the FoPoP Potluck Brunch! The Future of

Prince of Peace team invites everyone to join us for a Potluck

Brunch on Sunday, 12/4 immediately following the single 10am

Worship Service. There is a sign-up sheet in the hall for a

“brunchy” dish that you’d like to share. During this time together,

we’d also like to share with you our progress in formulating the

vision for Prince of Peace and what that means for our future

together.

2017 ENVELOPES

Envelopes will again be available in church this year. To save on

postage costs, they are not being mailed (unless by request). They

will be put in the hall the week before Christmas. Please look

through the boxes to find yours. If you do not find them, please

call the office at 685-2216 or call Jeff Smith, the Financial

Secretary at 474-1384. Also, please try to have all 2016 offerings

into church by the end of December. Thanks!

FLOWER CHART FOR 2017

The 2017 flower chart will be put up shortly. Please look over the

dates and choose when you wish to honor or remember your loved

ones. The cost is $20 per vase, and there are 2 available each

week. The envelopes are just below the chart. If you turn in your

envelope the Sunday before you purchase flowers, we will be

happy to list the name or names of your loved ones in the bulletin.

ROOF NEWS

The roof on Reformation Hall is showing signs that it is in need of

replacement. We have a leak on the west side of the building and

an inspection has revealed that shingles are beginning to curl and

there are some soft spots up there as well. We have had a couple

of companies take a look and have been advised that, barring any

unforeseen weather catastrophe, we should be able to wait until

spring to replace the roof. At this point two estimates have been

obtained and both are very close in price at $12,500 and $12,950.

Although steps have been taken to set aside funds for future capital

improvements, we only just began doing so this year. Council

made the determination earlier this year to designate a portion of

funds received from the Cantalician Center for building use each

month for this purpose. More recently, it was decided that the

funds raised by our Comedy Club and Meat Raffle events would

be designated for the roof. With these couple of measures being

taken we have a good start towards funding the roof replacement,

however, we still have a ways to go.

Those who are interested in making a donation for this project can

do so using a pew envelope and marking that the funds be

designated for the roof.

LEAVE A LEGACY

Give a gift that lasts beyond a lifetime. Easiest ways to impact the

future of your church are: remember us in your will, include us in

your retirement plan, purchase life insurance, set up a trust fund.

MISSION SUPPORT MESSAGE

From Marcia Brown, Mission Interpreter

This is the season of pledge cards and annual budgets, so a review

of Mission Support seems appropriate.

Through God’s grace, we are freed in Christ to love and serve our

neighbors. By sharing your God-given time, talents, and financial

resources with your church, you are participating in God’s work in

your community and around the world.

YOUR CONGREGATION: when you make a financial gift to

your congregation, the congregation’s council stewards those funds

to support the work of your congregation. In your annual budget, a

portion of your offering is designated to be shared with the Upstate

New York Synod. This is called Mission Support. If you do not see

a line item in your congregation’s budget called Mission Support,

ask why not.

YOUR SYNOD: All the congregations’ Mission Support is

stewarded by Bishop Macholz and the synod leaders to support the

work of the synod. Things like nurturing congregations and

rostered leaders, camps, colleges, seminaries. Synods designate a

percentage of the Mission Support funds to be sent to the

churchwide organization, usually 40-50%.

CHURCHWIDE: Mission Support dollars are used to respond to

local and worldwide ministry opportunities, like new & renewing

congregations, chaplaincy, advocacy, multicultural ministries,

missionaries, hunger and disaster programs.

Watch a short video to learn more. Go to YouTube search, and

type in “Where does your offering go?”

We are church together for the sake of the world. God’s Work.

Our Hands.
