A BLUEPRINT FOR CHANGEFrom scraps of fabric to 3D printers, locals are repurposing resources in surprising ways to arm health care workers and battle COVID-19
Use the sewing pattern printed with this story to sew your own face mask and follow these instructions to assemble:
1. Cut out the paper pattern to yourpreferred size. This will be the same pattern for both the outer layer and the inner lining of your mask. You may use the same fabric for both.
2. Fold your outer fabric in half to double, right sides facing each other. This will allowyou to cut out two pieces at once.
3. Pin the pattern to your doubled cottonfabric. If you don’t have pins, you can usebinder clips or paper clips.
4. Cut out the pieces. Remove patternfrom fabric.
5. You will have two identical pieces offabric – keep them laying on top of eachother. The curved side that looks like ahorn will be the middle of your mask.Stitch the two pieces along the curvedside.
6. Open the two pieces like you’re open-ing a book and iron flat. You now have theouter layer.
7. Repeat the above process for the innerlining. You will now have your outer andinner layers.
8. Stitch three of the four sides togetherwith right sides facing each other.
9. Turn inside out, so your preferred fabricis now on the outside.
10. Stitch the last side closed or leaveopen to insert a filter.
11. Attach straps to each corner to tiearound the back of the head or attachelastic to loop around the ears.
