FOREWARD:

Bismillahir-Rahman-Araheem(In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful)

Assalam-o-alaikum!

This booklet ‘A brief introduction of ziaraat in Syria’ is a humble attempt for the Zaireen going toSyria. The thought behind it is simple, to bring together information and ziyarat[s] of Syria in onebook which will serve as a guide that is easy to carry and share with others.

Our experience showed that while on ziyaraat and on visiting various shrines we had to refer todifferent books and although many books have been compiled for this purpose but at times theyhave much more information than required. Then looking up for the particular dua or ziyarattakes time, which is again very difficult in a crowded haram. Therefore, considering theseexperiences we decided to compile an exclusive book for ziyaraat in Syria.

The places mentioned in this book are the ones popularly visited by Zaireen although there maybe other places to visit.

Almost all the pictures used here have been personally taken by us on our past trips to Syria, so ifyou feel some of them are not perfectly focused, we apologize for the inconvenience. Our intentis to share personal experience with fellow zaireen.

We pray that this small yet sincere effort will be acknowledged by Panjatan Pak [as],Masoomeen [as] and everybody who supported in developing this book will beinshaAllah heavily rewarded by Allah [swt].

Lady Zainab, (Peace be upon her)

Daughter of Imam Ali [as] and Syeda Fatima al-Zahra [sa]

Lady Zainab [sa], daughter of Imam 'Ali [as] and grand daughter of Prophet Muhammad [saww],was the first lady in the world of Islam to form a whole history, erect edifices of right and justice, demolish the gloomy castle of wrong and oppression, and record, through her honorable situation, new items of honor and dignity for Islam and Muslims, throughout history. Thus, she has been aring in the series of the ideal, human glories that her fathers, brothers, descendants of herbrothers, and their partisans have introduced to humanity. Lady Zainab believed in the revolutionof her brother, participated in his struggle against wrong and oppression vigorously, and adoptedthe goals of this great revolution. Through her innovative speeches in the porticoes of theUmayyad ruling centre. After the killing of her brother Imam al-Hussain [as], Lady Zainab [sa],as well as the other harem of the Prophet's [saww] household, was taken as captive and had to bepresent before the bastard 'Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad’ who was given the position of the governorshipof two Islamic provinces. There she gave the most astounding and enlightening ‘Khutbas’ whichmoved everyone. She unfolded the lies of the tyrant leader ‘Yazeed’ and told the world that theywere the sons and daughters of the Holy Prophet [saww] and Hazrat Hussein [as] was the presentImam of the times. She suffered many more tragedies including passing away of her belovedniece, Bibi Sakina [sa] in the small dungeon [where the Harem were kept prisoners].After the Harem were released Lady Zainab [as] took the charge of spreading the story andpurpose of Kerbala amongst the People and she did that very well. As per a ‘riwayat’ LadyZainab [as] went to stay in ‘Rawiya’ where she suffered from illness and fatigue. She waswalking through the Garden owned by her Husband when she came across the tree where herbeloved Brother’s Pure Head was hung, she was overtaken by sadness and pain and wentunconscious, she fell in the small stream which stopped the water from flowing. The gardenerwent to inquire and when he saw her unconscious he took the chance and hit her pure head withspade, on hearing her scream Imam Syed Sajjad [as] and a maid rushed to her side to see herheavily wounded. On Sunday night of Rajab 14 62 Hijri she at the age of 55 the savior of IslamLad Zainab, daughter of the bravest Imam Ali ibne Abu Talib [as] went to join her belovedbrother and other members of Ahl-e-Bait in Heaven.

Bibi Sakina, (Peace be upon her)

Daughter of Imam Hussein Ibne Ali [as] and Bibi Umme Rubab [sa]

Sakina is a derivative of "Sakoon" meaning "Peace". Sakina was born on 20 Rajab, 56 AH. Hertitles includes Sakina, Ma‘sūmah, Aatika, Kulthūm, and Zaynab. Sukaina was the most beloveddaughter of Hussain ibn Ali and used to sleep on his chest every night. Hussain ibn Ali was oftenheard saying, "A house without Sukaina would not be worth living in".Like any other four-to-five year old, when Sakina went to bed at night she wanted to spend sometime with her father. Hussain ibn Ali would tell her stories of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad andof the battles fought by her grandfather Ali ibn Abi Talib. There was a special bond betweenSukaina and her paternal uncle, Abbas ibn Ali. After the battle of Karbala, sixteen days ofsuffering the miseries, the tortures and calamities for the Ahl al-Bayt. they reached Damascus.Sakina died in Damascus at the age of 4 in 61 AH and is buried within Sayyidah RuqayyaMosque in Damascus. Sakīnah's body was removed from its original burial place, dungeon ofSyria, some centuries later, when a pious man of Damascus was informed in his dream that waterwas pouring into the grave of Sakīnah. Upon confirmation that ground water was actuallyentering the grave and ancient tomb was about to collapse (1280AH/1863AD).When shrine wasopened for restoration, blessed clothed body of her was seen to be fresh and soft (never decayed

or changed) as if she were still alive (although buried 1400 years before). This miracle waswitnessed by the Turkish deputy governor, the supreme Judge & other personalities of rank at thattime and well mentioned in history books. Her shrine is now a huge beautiful piece of architecture, her grave covered with gold ornamentedZarih and a place of pilgrimage (ziyarat) for Muslims.

DAY OF ARBAEEN:

According to Imam Hasan bin Ali Al Askari [as] The signs of a true believer are five:-

1) Pray 51 Raka’t Namaaz during the 24 hours of the day (17 Raka’ts in obligatory, and 34Raka’ts in Naafilah Salaats).

2) Be in Karbala for Ziyaarat of Imam Husayn [as] and other martyrs, on Arbaeen if notpossible, recite Ziyaarat of the Holy Imam

3) To wear a ring in the right hand.4) To put the forehead on the earth (preferably on the earth of Karbala) in prostration.5) To pronounce “Bismillahir-Rah’maanir-Rah’eem” in clear and loud voice while praying

the salaats.

Why is so much importance given to the performance of the Ziyarat of Arba’een and theobservance of Arba’een (40 days of mourning)?

Ziyarat, as we all know is a visitation, which in essence, is the act of speaking with and visitingour role models. Of course the physical manifestation of the ziyarat is actually being present inKerbala to perform the Ziyarat of Arba’een, but, in reality, that is not possible for every believer. So does making ziyarat while not in Kerbala give one the same benefits? Ahadith tell us thatperforming the Ziyarat of Imam Hussain [as] far from Kerbala would hold the same significanceas being in the land of Kerbala, as long as the person performing the Ziyarat has truly understoodthe status of the Imam and seeks to emulate him.

Imam Muhamed al-Baqir [as] states that the heavens wept over Imam Hussain [as] for fortymornings, rising red and setting red. As we complete 40 days of remembrance of our Imam, were-assert our pledge of obedience and loyalty to him:

“I bear witness that you are the Imam (who is) the upright, the pious, well-pleased (with Allah),the pure, the guide and the rightly-guided. I bear witness that you fulfilled the pledge of Allah andyou struggled in His way…I am a friend of whoever befriends him ...”

By performing the Ziyarat of Arba’een, we pledge that we will continue to follow the path ofjustice and righteousness and will reject injustice and speak up against the oppressors of the time,

I am an enemy of whoever is his enemy...

In essence, we make a promise to continue to mold our lives according to the teaching of ImamHussain [as].

But why is it that we mourn and remember Imam Hussain [as] for a period of forty days and thenmove on?

Our Prophet has said, “The earth mourns the death of a believer for forty mornings.” Thereforeit appears that the deceased should be remembered and mourned over for a period of forty days.Performing an act for a continuous period of forty days is also known to help one to not just forma habit, but also to carry on the practice for the rest of his life.If we look at studies dealing with bringing a lifestyle change, we notice the time periodemphasized to bring about a change is usually 6 weeks which is about the same time period as 40days (to be exact it is 42 days).

In the book 40 Days to Personal Revolution: A Breakthrough Program to Radically Change YourBody and Awaken the Sacred Within Your Soul, the author Baron Baptiste explains thesignificance of forty days:

Why forty days? Because the number 40 holds tremendous spiritual significance in the realm oftransformation. Jesus wandered in the desert for forty days in order to experience purificationand come to a greater understanding of himself and his mission. Moses and his people traveledthrough the desert for forty years before arriving at their home in the holy land. Noah preservedthe sacredness of life by sailing his ark for forty days and forty nights. According to theKabbalah, the ancient Jewish mystical text, it takes forty days to ingrain any new way of beinginto our system….

Reciting particular duas for a period of 40 days is highly recommended in our practices as well. The unit 40 (forty) is said to be very effective. If a particular Duaa is recited 40 times, or 40people gather to recite it, or it is recited for 40 days then its effectiveness is highly increased.

It is reported from Imam Ja'fer Sadiq [as] that whoever recites Dua-e-Ahad for forty days, aftermorning prayers will be amongst the helpers of the 12th Imam [a]. Visitation of the shrine ofImam Hussain [as] as well as Masjid-e-Sahla for 40 consecutive Thursdays is also very highlyrecommended and is one of the acts that promises a visit from the 12th Imam [ajtf].

Thus, as we perform the Ziyarat of Arba’een and commemorate the Arba’een, 40 days ofmourning of Imam Hussain [as], we hope and pray that this forty days of remembrance of ImamHussain [as], brings about a transformation in us by which we can continue to follow the path ofImam Hussain [as] and carry on his message of upholding justice with true faith and a strongsense of sacrifice!

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE BENEFECIENT, THE MERCIFUL

Peace be on the beloved friend of Allah, His dearest darling!Peace be on the choicest confidant of Allah, sincerely attached precisely like his father!Peace be on Hussain, who established the true faith by giving his life in the way of Allah,a martyr, underwent untold hardships at the hand of rouges and lawbreakers! Peace be onthe hostage surrounded by the tightening circle of sorrow and grief, killed by a horde ofsavages.0 my Allah I give witness that beyond a shadow of doubt he is Thy favorite and choicestconfidant, who enjoys Thy confidence and favor, precisely like his father. Thou lookedupto him and elected him in Thy cause, picked and chose him for the good fortune, selected for him the best purified parents, appointed him guardian, leader, and defenderof rights, a true representative (inheritor and progenitor) of guardians, leaders anddefenders of rights, gave him much and more from the inheritance of the Prophets, puthim forward as a decisive argument, alongwith the other successors (of the Holy Prophet-the twelve Imams) to the mankind. He met with deadly dangers, acted justly and fairly, made use of everything belonging tohim to pay full attention to give sincere advice; took pains, made every effort, and put hisheart, mind, soul and life at the disposal of Thy mission to liberate the people from theyoke of ignorance and evil of bewilderment, but an evildoer, deceived with empty hopes

of mean and worthless worldly gains, had pressed heavily on him, and sold out his share(eternal bliss) for the meanest and lowest bargain, betrayed his "day of judgment" for avulgar return, took pride in insolence, fell into the fathom-well of silly stupid follies, provoked Thee and Thy Prophet to anger, did as the harsh discordant, the hypocrite, theheavily burdened bearers of sin, condemned to Hellfire, advised to him, however, he (theHoly Imam), steadily, rightly and justly coped with them, till, in Thy obedience, gave hislife after which his family was set adrift.0 my Allah, therefore, condemn them to hell as a denunciation and conviction; and crackdown on them with a painful punishment.Peace be on you 0 the son of the Messenger of Allah! Peace be on you 0 the son of thefirst of the successors (of the Holy Prophet)I bear witness that Allah put faith in you like He had full confidence in your father, and that you always looked for and collected good and virtue, lived a highly praiseworthylife, and departed from this world a martyr, forsaken and abused;I bear witness that Allah will promptly fulfil the promise He made to you, and destroythose who left you helpless and punish those who killed you.I bear witness that you kept your promise made with Allah, and strived in His way tillwhat was certain came upon you, so curse of Allah be on those who killed you, curse ofAllah be on those who oppressed you. Curse of Allah be on the people who came toknow and approved (of it all).O my Allah be my witness that I make friends with those who love him and oppose thosewho deny him.I, my father and mother, are at your disposal 0 the son of the Messenger of Allah.I know and bear witness that you were the "light" in the sublime loins and in the purewombs, never touched you the dirt of ignorance, nor ever obscurity concealed you in itsfolds; I bear witness that you are the pillar of "Deen". Support of the Muslims, refuge ofthe faithful.I bear witness that you are a truthful, well-aware, content, intelligent, rightly guidedguide (Imam).I bear witness that the Imams among your descendants are the symbols of "consciouspiety" and signs of "true guidance", the "safe handle"-lslam and the decisive argumentsover mankind.I declare positively that I have full faith in you, and I know for certain that you shallreturn. Dialogues between Harem Pak [as] and Yazeed [la] after they were brought to hispalace bounded in chains:

When Yazeed [la] said following:

"I wish my forefather at badr had witnessed How the khazraj by the thorn annoyed,They would have Glorified and Unified Allah Then they would make tahleel and say inelation: "May your hands, o Yazid, never be paralyzed:" We have killed the master oftheir chiefs. And equated it with Badr, and it was so, indeed Hashim played with thedominion so indeed. No news came, nor was there a revelation revealed. I do not belongto khandaf. I do not seek revenge from Ahmed's children for what he to us had done"

Zainab [sa] reacted to these lines delivered the following speech:

”All Praise is due to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. Allah has blessed His Messenger and allhis messenger's progeny. Allah, Glory to him, has said the truth when he said,” Then theend those who committed evil was that they disbelieved in Allah's signs and they wereridiculing them."(Quran, 30:10) Do you, O Yazid, think that when you blocked all theavenues before us, so we were driven as captives, that we are light in the sight of ALLAHand that you are superior to us? Or is it because you enjoy with Him a great status, so youlook down at us and become arrogant elated, when you see the world submissive to youand things are done as you want them, and when our authority and power became allyours? But wait! Have you forgotten that Allah has said," Do not regards those whodisbelieved that we grant them good for themselves? We only give them a respite so thatthey may increase their sins, and for them there is a humiliating torment"(Qur’an 3:178)?

Is it fair, O son of taleeq, that you keep your free as well as slave women in there in theirchambers and at the same time drive the daughter of the messenger of Allah as captivewith their veils removed and faces exposed, taken by their enemies from one land to another, being viewed those at watering places as well as those who man your forts withtheir faces exposed to the looks of every one near or distant, lowly or honorable, havingnon of their protectors with them nor any of their men? But when can be expected fromone whose mouths chewed the livers of the purified ones and whose flesh grows out ofthe blood of the martyrs? How can it be expected that one who looks at us with grudgeand animosity, with hatred and malice, would not hate us we Ahle bait [a.s]? Besides youwith out feeling any guilt or weighing heavily what you say, you recite saying:"Then they would make tehleel and say in elation: May your hands, O yazid never beparalyzed!"

How dare you hit the lips of Abu-Abdullah, the Master of youth of paradise? But whyshould you not do so, since you stirred a wound that almost healed, and since all mercy isremoved from your heart, having shed the blood of the offspring of the Muhammad peaceand blessing of Allah be upon him and his progeny, and the stars on the earth fromamong the family of Abu-Muttalib? Then you cite your mentors as of you speak tothem… soon shall you be lodged with them, and soon shall you wish you were paralyzedand muted and never said what you said or did what you did.

O Allah! Take what belong to us out of his hands, seek revenge against all those whooppressed us, and let your Wrath descend upon whoever shed our blood and killed ourprotectors! By Allah! You have burnt only your own skin! You have cut only your ownflesh! You shall come face to face with the Messenger of Allah, peace of Allah be uponhim his Progeny, bearing the burden of blood which you have shed, the blood of hisoffspring, and of his sanctities which you violated, the sanctities of his women, hiskinsfolk, his flesh and blood, when Allah gathers then together and seek equity on theirbehalf. "And do not reckon those who are slain in the Way of Allah as dead. Nay! Theyare living with their Lord, receiving their sustenance"(Qur’an 3:169).

Allah suffices you as your judge and Muhammad, peace and blessing of Allah be uponhim and his progeny, as your opponent, and Gabriel as your foe. All those who instigatedyou to do what you did and who put you in charge so that you might play havoc with thelives of the Muslims, how evil the end of the oppressors is and which of you shall havethe worst place and will be the least protected? Although calamities has forced me tospeak to you, I nevertheless see you small in my eyes and find your verbal attack great, and I regard your rebuke too much bear, but these eyes are tearful, and the chests arefilled with depression. What is even stranger is that taleeq party Satan is killing thehonored party of Allah. Such hands are dripping with our blood; such mouths are feedingon our flesh, while those scared and pure corpses are offered as food to the wild beast ofthe desert and are dirtied by the brutes. If you regard us as your booty, you shall soon findus as your opponents, that will be when you find nothing but what your hands hadcommitted, and your Lord never treats His servants unjustly. To Allah is my complaint, and upon Him do I rely. So scheme what ever you wish to scheme, and carry out yourplots, and intensify your efforts, for by Allah, you shall never be able to kill ourinspiration, nor will your shame never be washed away. Your view shall be proven futile, your days numbered, and your wealth wasted on the Day when caller calls out, "Thecurse of Allah is upon the oppressors" (Qur’an 11:18). All praise is due to Allah, Lord ofthe world, who sealed the life of our early ones with happiness and forgiveness, and thatof our last with martyrdom and mercy. We plead to Allah to complete His rewards forthem and grant them an increase and make succession good for us; he is the mostMerciful, the most compassionate. Allah suffices us, and how great He is!

Tied up with ropes, forced to ride saddle less, lean camels, and being in the utmost stateof humiliation, the harem and children of the prophet's family were taken to Syria.Throughout their journey, they did not say a single word and did not ask anything fromthe drivers of their caravan. Being close to Syria, the caravan stopped so that enough timewould be given to adorn the city with manifestations of festivity and to gather people towitness this false victory of their ruler.

The caravan was about four parasangs away from Syria when its people received themwith joy, carrying drums and trumpets, and wearing their best dresses -all this was forshowing their delight for the massacre of the Prophet's family.

Let us listen the scene as described by eyewitness:

SAHL IBN SA'D AL-SA'IDI NARRATED:

Intending to visit Jerusalem, I passed by Damascus, but it was different -the city wasexaggeratedly adorned with colourful gilding, its people were highly joyful, and theirwomen were playing tambourines and drums. I thought that people of Damascus had afestivity that we did not have. Noticing some people talking secretly, I approached themand asked,

"Do you people of Syria, celebrate a festivity that we do not know?""It seems that you are strange, are you not?" asked they "Yes, it is. I, Sahl ibn Sa'd, amone of those who met the Messenger of Allah," answered I.

They said, "Sahl, do you not think that it is very strange that the heavens are not rainingblood and the earth is not sinking with its inhabitants?"

“What for is that?" asked I. "All these are expecting the arrival of al-Hussain's (cut off)head from Kufa," they revealed.

"How strange this is! The head of al-Hussain is being forwarded while people arecrowding cheeringly! From which gate will the head enter the city?" asked I.

As they pointed at the Gate of al-Sa't, I hurried there. A queue of banners began to enter, but my eyes fell on a horseman who had in the hand a banner without a spearhead onwhich lied a head most similar to that of the Holy Prophet [saww]. That was the head ofal-Hussain! On saddleless, lean camels, the captives appeared. As I reached one of thecaptives ladies, I asked about her identity.

"I am Sukaynah daughter of al-Hussain," she replied. "And I am Sahl, the companion ofyour grandfather the Messenger of Allah, ask for anything and I will do it for you," Ioffered. Grievously, she asked, "Ask the bearer of al-Hussain's head to precede us for aconsiderable distance so that people will look at head and ignore looking at us - thefamily of the Messenger of Allah."

So, I ran towards that horseman, bribed him with four hundred dirham, and asked him tohurry forwardly away from the captive ladies, and he did.

IMAM 'ALI ZAYN AL-'ABIDIN [AS] AND THE OLD MAN:

In that situation too, an old Syrian man leaning on a stick who was gloating at thehumility of those captives approached Imam 'Ali Zayn al-'Abidin (a) and said wreakfully,"Praise be to Allah who eradicated you and empowered the emir to triumph over you."

Out of his keenness and perspicacity, the Imam noticed that the old man was deceived by

Page 26: A Brief Introduction of Ziaraat in Syria

the wrong rumours that the ruling authorities spread against the Ahl al-Bayt [as]. Hetherefore asked, "Old man, have you recited the Holy Qur'an?"

This statement shocked the old man who wondered and, thus, answered affirmatively. The Imam [as] then asked him whether he had seen the following Quranic Verses: "Say: Ido not ask of you any reward for it but love for my near relatives. (16:26)" "And knowthat whatever thing you gain, a fifth of it is for Allah and for the Messenger and for thenear relatives. (8:41)" Amazingly, the old man answered that he had recited these Verse.

The Imam [as] thus declared, "Only is it we who are intended in Allah's remark 'the nearrelatives' in these Verses."

Furthermore, the Imam [as] asked the old man whether he had recited Allah's saying:"Allah only desires to keep away the unclianness from you, O people of the House! andto purify you a (thorough) purifying. (33:33)"

With astonishment, the old man answered that he had recited this Verse, too.The Imam [as] hence said, "Only is it we who are the 'People of the House' whomAlmighty Allah has purified thoroughly."

This fact changed the old man completely and made him feel sorry for the days on whichhe could not discern the reality of the Umayyad rulers and their authorities. Even histongue was tied up by the new fact; he therefore said to the Imam falteringly, "Please, tellme by Allah! Is it you truly those ones?"

"Yes, it is, I swear it by our grandfather, the Messenger of Allah [Swt]," replied the Imam[as] confidently.

Feeling sorry for the words that he first showered at the Imam [as], the old man threwhimself on the hands of the Imam [as] to kiss them heavily as signs of remorse, declaring,"I disavow those who killed you."

LADY ZAINAB [sa] AND A SYRIAN MAN

A Syrian man who attended the session of Yazid looked at Lady Fatimah daughter ofImam al-Hussain in captivity and said to Yazid, "Give this girl to me to serve me." Asshe heard this shocking statement, the lady trembled and grabbed hold to her aunt's cloak.Lady Zainab shouted at the Syrian man, "You, the mean one, have lied. Neither you norcan even your leader (i.e. Yazid) do this." This statement enraged Yazid who said, "Icould if I would." Lady Zainab answered, "No, you can not do it unless you abandon ourreligion and take another for yourself." As Yazid realized the big insult that Lady Zainabtargeted at him by these words, he shouted at her, "How dare you say such words in myface? It was your father and your brother who abandoned the religion!"

Compiled by: Gulrukh Razi

Page 27: A Brief Introduction of Ziaraat in Syria

Indifferent to the tyrant's authority and ability to punish Lady Zainab replied him soconfidently saying, "Only by the religion of Allah and that of my father and grandfatheryou and your father were guided, if you are really Muslim." By these words, Lady Zainabunmasked the tyrant who claimed Imam al-Hussain and his family's being apostates. As aresult, people of Syria realized that the captives were the Holy Prophet's family aboutwhom many Quranic Verses were revealed from the Almighty Lord, and that Yazid wasno more than a faithless liar. "You have lied, enemy of Allah!" these were the only wordsthat Yazid could find to answer Lady Zainab whose answer was, "You are a dominantruler! You can revile [at anybody] unjustly and you prevail on anyone through yourauthority."

The tyrant's rage decreased and he had to nod down meanwhile, the Syrian man repeatedhis request, but Yazid shouted at him, "May Allah inflict upon you a swift death!"

Hence, Lady Zainab could control her self-power and self-will that she inherited from herforefathers to face the tyrant and to triumph upon him.

An author says:bff women as captives or to be treated as such in wars."

Anyhow, the Syrian man's request was seemly the opening of a long articles of criticismand reproach against Yazid and the beginning of the Syrian was not so dull, especiallyafter he had heard the reply of Lady Zainab [sa] that proved Yazid's having beenexcluded from Islam if he would respond to the Syrian man's request. This proves that theman only intended to disgrace Yazid.
