Quality, Holistic and Transformative EducationQuality education

Recognition from professional bodies

The University also performs Academic Self Assessment Procedure, an internal assessment system, and quality audits on all UTAR programmes to ensure that they fulfil the standards and requirements set by relevant statutory and professional bodies.

All UTAR’s programmes are approved by the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) before they are offered for admission. To ensure and maintain quality assurance, MoHE also requires programmes to be accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications

Agency (MQA) before students can graduate with a recognised award. The University consistently works closely with MQA towards the accreditation of all programmes. Reviews and assessments are regularly conducted to ensure that UTAR programmes meet both national and international standards.

For professional programmes such as Accounting, Actuarial Science, Engineering, Medicine, and Quantity Surveying, the programmes are designed to meet the standards of professional bodies, so that UTAR graduates can advance to become certified professionals in their careers. The professional bodies include:

ACCA – Association of Chartered Certified Accountants• BEM – Board of Engineers Malaysia• BQSM – Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia• CIMA – Chartered Institute of Management Accountants• CIOB – Chartered Institute of Building, UK• ICSA – Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators, UK• RICS – Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, UK• RSC – Royal Society of Chemistry, UK• SOA – Society of Actuaries, USA•

International benchmarks

Industry Advisors

In recognition of the high content of ICT usage in the programmes offered, UTAR has been awarded the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) status by the Multimedia Development Corporation. UTAR also attained the ISO 9001 Quality Management System certification for its administrative divisions i.e. Division of Examinations, Awards and Scholarships and Library.

To ensure impartiality in the evaluation of academic standards, prominent members from academia worldwide are appointed as external examiners of UTAR academic programmes. All the programmes are assessed to benchmark against international standards by external examiners, who are experts in the fields concerned, from renowned universities all over the world.

UTAR has a panel of industry advisors comprising eminent scholars, professionals and entrepreneurs who are at the forefront of their fields of specialisation. They contribute input to the development of curriculum and share their expertise and experience through regularly organised talks, workshops and seminars on the latest developments in the industries. The participation of the industry advisors contributes greatly to the advancement of teaching, learning and research at UTAR.

Industrial training

UTAR places great importance on industrial training which provides the avenue for students to comprehend and appreciate real-life work experience. Thus, industrial training is a compulsory subject for all undergraduate degree programmes. A combination of theory and practical experience gained through the industrial training programme equips UTAR graduates with the required knowledge and skills to take on challenges in the working world.

UTAR students have been placed in multinational corporations such as Intel, Motorola, Citibank, Ogilvy & Mather, Shell, Deloitte, KPMG, Bosch, GITI (China), MIDF, UNISEM, Altera Corporation (M) Sdn Bhd, Fairchild Semiconductor (M) Sdn Bhd, National Semiconductor Sdn Bhd, Sony EMCS (M) Sdn Bhd, Sony Supply Chain Solution(M) Sdn Bhd, Public Bank, SP Setia Group, Sunway Construction Sdn Bhd, Unisem Sdn Bhd, Media Prima Bhd, Bernama, Petronas, Shell Malaysia, The Star and others for added global exposure.

To prepare our students for an increasingly competitive global workplace, they are also given the opportunity to carry out research and secure industry attachments not only in Malaysia but also in foreign organizations. Many UTAR students have completed their industrial attachments at renowned foreign institutions and organisations such as Queensland University of Technology in Australia, National University of Singapore, Temasek LifeSciences Laboratory in Singapore, National Taipei University of Education, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology and Feng Chia University in Taiwan.

Holistic and Transformative Education

Learning Beyond ClassroomLife on campus for UTAR students is certainly exciting. The campuses provide students with diverse learning opportunities to develop their passions and personal interests. With a student population of 19,000 at its four campus locations, students can expect a learning environment that is truly enriching and stimulating.

The distinction of a UTAR education extends beyond equipping student with knowledge. This is achieved through the enhancement of soft skills in addition to the broad-based, versatile and industry-aligned curricula. To enhance character building, the students are imbued with a sense of social and ethical responsibility to nurture them into a socially engaged and responsible citizen. UTAR provides entrepreneurship training to the students through many activities organised by the University’s Department of Soft Skills Competency and student clubs and societies. All undergraduates are also required to take the subject “Sun Tzi’s Art of War and Business Strategies”.

In short, the University provides students with total learning experience that would broaden their horizons, transform their lives and empower them to serve and contribute to the nation and beyond.

These sets of philosophies underpin UTAR’s efforts in ensuring the holistic development of its students:

德• – Virtue and Morality

智• – Knowledge and Intellect

体• – Physical and Mental Health

群• – Sociality and Humanitarianism

美• – Aesthetics and harmony

新• – Creativity and Innovation

68

Soft Skills DevelopmentWith its vision of providing holistic education, the University looks beyond developing students academically to providing them with soft skills that enhance their contributions to the workplace and society.

Recognising the importance of soft skills, the University has introduced the UTAR Soft Skills Development Certificate (USSDC), a certification system to recognise students’ achievements and efforts to improve themselves on the following seven core competencies:

Communication and language• Critical thinking, creative thinking and problem-solving skills• Emotional intelligence• Entrepreneurship • Integrity and ethics• Leadership skills• Lifelong learning and information management skills•

Over 100 Soft Skills Development Certificate programmes are offered to equip students with work-related skills that would give the extra edge when they enter the job market. The training involves experiential learning in a series of interactive training sessions and activities outside the classroom.

New Village Community ProjectOne of our groundbreaking projects, the UTAR New Village Community Project has attracted great participation from students to conduct survey to explore and study the needs, challenges and opportunities of new villages in Malaysia. Through participation in the projects, students gain better understanding of the history, background and development in new villages and learn to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life in new villages. Started in 2009, students completed 113 projects with another 124 projects in progress.

Our students are encouraged to apply their entrepreneurial skills to improve the life of rural and underprivileged community. For these projects, they are also involved in serving the villagers by giving tuition, teaching computer skills and conducting motivational talks to students, and working with doctors and relevant government bodies to provide health screening for the villagers.

One of our student’s business plans of developing an oyster mushroom farm to help to improve the life of a rural community in Sabah has won him first prize in the social entrepreneurship business plan competition sponsored by Little Rain Children Trust and was awarded RM10,000 to carry out his business plan.

Speakers’ CornerThe University has also created a Speakers’ Corner modeled on the one at Hyde Park London for students to express their ideas, views and opinions on any topic that interests them. This is to develop a dialogue culture which helps students to enhance their soft skills in the public speaking, constructive evaluation, listening and critical thinking.

71

Sungai Siput Selatan New Village UTAR students worked with six doctors and eight paramedics from the Perak Medical Practitioners Society to offer free health examination to the residents of Sungai Siput Selatan New Village.

Deputy Homes Affairs Minister Dato’ Lee Chee Leong officially opened in Tronoh Mines New Village on 26 November 2011 the U-Liang Shufang, a mini library which was the end-product of a community project of UTAR Public Relations students. The Public Relations students took part in a Volunteerism Campaign in March and April 2011 to raise funds for the mini library.

Global Diversity

To provide a multi-dimensional learning environment and global exposure to UTAR community, our learning atmosphere is enriched through the diversity brought by students and staff from countries in different parts of the world. The vibrant UTAR community now consists of a diverse population that includes international students from 23 different economies including Afghanistan, China, Kenya, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Germany, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Palestine, and the UK. The University also has international academic staff from 17 economies including Australia, Canada, China, India, Japan, Singapore, Myanmar, and the UK.

“I believe UTAR will provide me with a good learning environment and lots of internship opportunities as it has established relationships with many leading companies. “Due to the rising need for qualified business professionals and rapid development in the business sector in my country and also all over the world, I decided to study business in UTAR. “Now I’m quite used to local accents and can communicate well [with the locals] and have adjusted well to the campus environment.”

Alex Muthuhi Musila, Kenya Business Administration student Perak Campus

“I took up Business Adminstartion programme in UTAR because I like to start a career in business in the future or work for the leading firms. I like to mingle with the local students though I have a little communication problem [the accents] with them, but it is not a major issue.”

Keston Bonaya Nyanyu, KenyaBusiness Administration studentPerak Campus

“There is a variety of clubs and societies in this campus and a lot of activities already planned for the semester. So, it will be really easy for me to make new friends here. I also like the environment and its green scenery. I feel relaxed studying on this campus.”

Sebastian Wagener, GermanyExchange student from Harz University, GermanyPerak Campus

73

“I find that the way of teaching in UTAR is more comprehensive; lecturers here encourage students to do more reading and research that enables me to learn more.”

May Thu Htet, Myanmar Master of Engineering Science student Kuala Lumpur Campus

“I got to know that UTAR was offering Bachelor of Arts (Hons) English Language at an education fair in my country and I decided to study in UTAR because as a Muslim there would be less cultural differences in Malaysia compared to other Asian countries. I can eat in halal restaurants and communicate with others in English as English is commonly used here.”

Limbada Sayed Irshadally, Mauritius English Language studentPerak Campus

“I have always been interested in Southeast Asian Literature and doing research in the field. UTAR became my choice of place to study as I knew the lecturers here had the credentials. So, I was confident that they could help me in my study. I also like the beautiful campus and its surroundings especially the old town.”

Ma Feng, China Doctor of philosophy in Chinese Studies Perak Campus

“UTAR is where I have many experiences. First, city life at Petaling Jaya Campus during my foundation programme and then country life at Perak Campus for my degree programme. Life in Kampar is not as boring as many may think, because of the scenic campus, close friendship and interesting studies. I have really enjoyed my life in UTAR.”

Toni, Indonesia

Completed his degree in Communication Networking programme in March 2011, and is now doing his master degree in Computer Science in UTAR Perak Campus.

74

Overseas Study TourUTAR believes that, in this era of globalisation, it is essential for the students to be exposed to a multi-cultural and enriching educational experience. To achieve that, we have organised educational tours to China, Taiwan and Australia, and Korea, where they were exposed to the education cultures and campus life of the respective countries.

UTAR also welcomes foreign students to visit our campuses. UTAR has played host to students from the universities in the USA, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Germany, France, Thailand and others. UTAR students are encouraged to build contacts and develop skills to network beyond their home country. Through cross-cultural and educational exchanges, students will deepen their understanding on global perspective.

81

Career FairThe University organises career fairs and career days twice a year at all the campuses before the final examinations to provide opportunity for fresh graduates, graduating students and alumni to explore career and internships opportunities with prospective employers. In 2010, the University also began to work with the Japanese Chamber of Trade & Industry, Malaysia (JACTIM) to organise career fairs for UTAR graduating students.

82

Entrepreneurial Talk SeriesIt is our strong belief that the seed of entrepreneurship needs to be sown at the University level so as to produce more innovators and entrepreneurs. Malaysia needs more innovators and entrepreneurs as catalysts of change in our new economy. To encourage the development of entrepreneurial spirit and skills, UTAR has rolled out the UTAR Entrepreneurship and Commercialisation Plan in October 2010. In January 2011, we launched the UTAR Entrepreneurial Talk Series. In the pipeline is the establishment of a business incubation cluster under the Student Entrepreneurial Programme where students are encouraged and assisted to be entrepreneurs.
