A Career in Economics

By Philip H Brown, Economist

Page 2: A Career in Economics

If you are considering a career in economics, this is a brief overview of what you can expect from a normal workday as an economist. The nitty gritty of the economist’s job description involves collecting and analyzing datasets. These data are then used to explain and predict trends related to macro-economies, particular industries, economic policies, international trade and development, finance, labor markets, poverty and inequality, and many other issues of global significance.

Common work environments for an economist include universities, banking and other financial institutions, businesses, and government agencies or international organizations.

Introduction

Page 3: A Career in Economics

An economist may advise a business on new avenues and markets during a financial crisis, or consult for federal, state, or county governments on determining fiscal policies such as taxes and international trade. Because the economy is constantly changing, an economist’s job can often prove tricky, requiring advanced mathematical skills to make collected data meaningful and usable. Economists often complete a Master’s degree or PhD, but certain entry-level jobs consider those with a Bachelor’s degree.
