Welcome to Guédelon in northern Burgundy, two hours south of Paris, where, watched by visitors from around the world, a team of master-builders is building a 13th-century castle from scratch.

Quarrymen, stonemasons, woodcutters,

carpenter-joiners, blacksmiths, tile makers, carters,

basket makers and rope makers are working together to revive heritage craft skills and to shed light on the world of medieval construction.

Discover the art of dying wool with plant-based dyes,

preparing pigments for the castle’s mural paintings and the medieval method for minting coins.

At Guédelon, you can see more than eleven different crafts at work, spread across ten hectares; over a dozen rooms have already been built, or are being built, in which you can admire the fruit of the team’s labour. At Guédelon, you can also visit a working flour mill, an exhibition on water mills and hydraulic power in the Guédelon venture.

Guédelon, where history comes alive

Whether you choose to follow an unguided visit or a guided tour, don’t forget to take time to explore the site at your own pace and meet all the different craftsmen and women or simply enjoy this area of outstanding natural beauty.
